Great tip man! I thought I had ruined a new cap because I had to shove it in an overpacked suitcase. I should have done a "before" photo. This thing was a crease covered mess. Sw your video and gave it the steam treatment for about 10 minutes total. The hat looks like new and is actualy molded to my head now because I put it on while still a bit damp. Using a kettle is an awesome idea
@Jared-xf5xl
@Jared-xf5xl 4 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have a kettle, take a piece of cardboard, cut a hole in the middle of it, and stick it on top of a tea pot or metal pot and pour water into it and then grab a piece of toilet paper or paper towel roll and tape it to hole in the middle of the cardboard slab. Then wait for the pot to start boiling and steam to rise and then place the cardboard over the pot and boom their ya go. But only have the cardboard there for a few minutes because the cardboard will begin to get soggy.

Hey man, thanks for the great feedback. Unfortunately I haven't worked out a good way to smooth out that sort of thing. About the only thing you could try is to stuff the cap with a towel or old t-shirt, putting pressure on the seams to flatten the peaks from the inside... then hit it with steam and let it cool with the pressure still applied. No guarantee, but you could try it - if I figure something else out, I'll post it!

@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
I have not been too successful in getting those out either... but you really need a "form" that you can press inside the cap... in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apOhZ9iX2puxZqs.html I use either a towel, or a small soccer "skills" ball. There has to be something that is making those smooth while you steam it. Thanks for the question, if I find something else you can be sure I'll make a video!

Do you have a video on how to fix a hat that has the material in the front (I think you called it bachram?) that has been washed and is now horribly wrinkled? My wife washed my sons hat and the front is really a mess. It's a one of a kind hat and I'd like to fix it.
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 4 жыл бұрын
It's called 'buckram'... and it can get rippled with moisture and heat. Best thing to do is to wet it a little bit, stuff a towel inside of it to press out the shape, and heat it with a hairdryer while doing that. It's moldable because of the plastic fibers in the stiff kind of buckram that New Era uses in most of their cap types.

Actually, if the cap has stiff buckram on those front panels, you'll need to do more than just steam them - I'd suggest watching this one - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqifibunmt-XhKM.html - for what to do on the front panels, thanks.

@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I've never tried it. I assume you're talking about an A-frame style cap, where the seam ends in a point. That's a tough spot to get rid of it, because the stitched joint there is very stiff and would be tough to flatten. Sorry I don't have a good idea for you.

Hey Dre616, I just took a gamble on trying to shrink a fitted by boiling it and then putting in the dryer. Worked perfectly for sizing but now there’s several wrinkled up areas. The steaming kettle helped a bit but not entirely. Are they gonna be permanent do you think? Any other ideas? Thanks man.
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 Жыл бұрын
That's pretty aggressive on a cap - they're durable, but there is a limit. In one or both of my shrinking videos I talk about the "puckering" that results from substantial application of moisture and heat. The fibers draw tight when they shrink, so it is inevitable that you get this. Best you can do is to try and smooth it out by steaming it with a bump cap insert inside the cap (my video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5-ghtyf0ZqzZ4E.html ), thanks.

Does it have to be specifically steam or can a heat gun work just as good??
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 3 ай бұрын
For removing wrinkles in fabric, steam has been the magic ingredient for tailors and upholsterers over the centuries - it's pretty important for the moisture to relax the fabric. The only spot on a cap where a heat gun is as effective would be the front two panels, where the buckram backer can be shaped with heat alone. You can also curve the visor with heat only, although I still recommend steam there too, thanks.

Yes, but you've got to stuff something inside the buckram to press it out while heating it. Like a towel or old t-shirt... press out and hold until it cools, and you might be able to get those creases out.

Any tips on getting out a crease on the bill of the cap
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 6 жыл бұрын
I don't have a good tip for that situation yet. Even if the bill has a plastic insert, a crease probably means that it's absorbed some permanent stress. You can flatten it with a steam iron, but if you re-curve you may find the crease again. I haven't verified that approach, so if you try, good luck. Thanks

@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 2 жыл бұрын
It's unfortunate, but that excess material just needs to go somewhere... I actually talked about that in some of my crown shaping videos. When you shape or rake the crown back a little bit more, it creates that effect too - it's not helped by the joint to those two panels, where the mid panels are folded and sitting on top of the two buckram-lined front panels.

@dreinthe616

Steam will help to smooth out any fabric areas of the cap. The heat should also help with the front two panels, with the buckram under them - but you might need something like a towel or old t-shirt on the inside. For the visor, it would probably be a little tougher to remove creases. Good luck!

How do your hats to stand back up if they get crushed flat?? Starch possibly ?
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 3 жыл бұрын
The structured crowns in New Era caps actually have plastic fibers woven into the buckram under the front two panels. Once those get bent, creased or otherwise crushed it is just about impossible to restore the structure. I have a video that can help remove dents and creases ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apOhZ9iX2puxZqs.html ), but if it's just about flat, the techniques there might not be enough. I personally would not recommend starch, I don't think it will give any real structure back to the cap.

Late in this video I show one way, but it requires extra gear - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apOhZ9iX2puxZqs.html - thanks.

How do u get rid of creases in the front two panels?

Heat panels with a hairdryer or teapot/steam, while holding a towel or t-shirt stuffed inside the cap panels - when cap is heated, press outward with the towel.

There was creases all over my hat, and I kind of just held the hat over a plot that was steaming, and it works.

Does this work with the plastic netting on trucker hats?

Heat/steam can do a lot of things, but you'll have to try that one for yourself - you're probably not going to hurt it, though.

Wont the front part of the cap go soft and collapse? I remember putting a hair dryer into my hat and ruined it completely.

Time and temperature exposure are important to watch. There's plastic in the buckram under the front two panels - and the softening temperature of those fibers is around 170 deg. F - and the melt temperature maybe closer to 200. So you just need to be careful with how long you expose the heat. Getting wrinkles out of the sides like shown here is a little easier because you don't have to worry about the plastic fibers so much.

Does this work for the front two panels?
@dreinthe616
@dreinthe616 6 жыл бұрын
I have not done it a lot, but yes, it is probably effective with the front two panels as well. I think the key is making sure there is something underneath them to provide a "form" - so that those panels don't drift inward and form any new folds or wrinkles. If you give it a try, good luck and feel free to post another comment. Thanks!

It really works on the front panels. The only sad thing with the front panels that I've been through is a mark of the sweatband on the fabric. In this video I can see that you have the same problem with this particular cap. Did you pay attention to this detail? It really boggles me every time that I found this thing because you can never get rid of them. Do you know if a hair spray can really make the front panels stiffer?

The heat will probably help it, I’d give it a try but go slow, since I’m not sure of the softening temperature of that plastic mesh.
