Actually, the BC2 couchettes dates back to the 1940’s and 50’s, but they were heavily rebuilt and refurbished in the 70’s and 80’s. They really are a proof of how long rail equipment may last! Awesome video as always!

Nice trip report :) 20:32 they are expanding the line to four tracks. Instead of just building the second pair next to the first pair, they are completely relaying the tracks with new cuttings and stations. To keep traffic flowing, they have built a temporary double track next to the construction site, limited to 100 kph. You were very lucky to wake up in sunny Denmark and being able to enjoy the view from the bridges! The train does actually stop in Copenhagen, although at a station called Høje Tåstrup. It is around 12 kilometres from the Central Station, but stopping there saves them the trouble of reversing out of the Central Station towards Sweden. There have been occasions where they did stop at the Central Station, but that was due to engineering works on the bypass line. You also asked if the Swedish coaches could go through Denmark, the short answer is no, they can't. Danish loading gauge is bigger than the German, but smaller than the Swedish. The X2000, for example, would be too big to go to Germany.

FYI Snäll is also an old Swedish word for fast so “Snälltåget” doesn’t actually mean “Kind train” but rather “The fast train”. From the Wikipedia: “The name is cognate to German Schnellzug, meaning fast train, although using an archaic meaning of snäll (the word means kind/nice in modern Swedish)”

Nah. In modern Swedish it means “the kind train”. We don’t say “snabbtåget” which is Swedish for “the fast train”. We occasionally use “höghastighetståg” (high speed train) to be even more precise. But it’s not such a common word. X2000 is a höghastighetståg. “Nett” in modern German is kind. Back 200 years ago the words meant both fast (snabb) and kind. Today it means kind.

Actually the part of snälltåget meaning "kind train" is... well, it's true if you talk linguistics ("det snälla tåget") but the origin of the term "snälltåg" is a direct Swedification of the German "Schnellzug." "Fast train." So, yeah, when "snälltåg" were introduced these were the fastest trains in Sweden. Another thing, yes, these trains really do take you back in time. They look almost exactly the same as in the Seventies and early Eighties when I was a kid. Of course, back then you had smoker and non-smoker cars. I always sat in the smoker cars, it smelled comfy. That was a thing until Health Fascism conquered Sweden. ;)

My own experience on Snälltåget is a mixed one. I love trains and I love the possibility to go to Berlin by train, since I also work remotely at a company in Berlin but live in Stockholm. The prices however are a bit on the extreme side, especially compared to flights, and sure, that's not snälltågets fault I guess. I just wish they'd get subsidies from the government or something. But snälltåget itself... well, on several of my trips, more than half the toilets were out of order. On my last trip, maybe 6th overall, the conductor saw my folded bike and claimed that I wasn't allowed to bring even folding bikes, even though mine fit nicely in the luggage compartment inside the couchette (we were already moving so there was little he could do at that point). In couchettes the conductor collected people's passports for the overnight border checks (which is ridiculous considering we're in the EU...), but the same service was NOT offered to people sitting in coach - yet another fail. I did coach once and never again - 19 hours in those seats was a nightmare, even worse than some 14 hour economy flights... The fact that the dining car gets disconnected in Malmö is disappointing, as it stands you need to stress-eat your dinner before arriving in malmö and there are only some dry "sandwiches" on offer from the conductors stash in the morning when arriving in berlin. Same goes from departing from berlin, no dinner options on board. I understand the reasoning - probably bringing an extra car costs money and most likely there is a technical issue with the size of the car, but it's annoying nonetheless. Another big fail for me was the train change in Malmö. On multiple occasions I paid about 50 euros extra to avoid changing trains in Malmö, you heard that right, snälltåget offered 2 ticket types for the berlin-sthlm route, one with a change in Malmö, same exact schedule, but one ticket was 50 eur more, weird right? In the end they still forced everyone to change trains, and later refused to acknowledge that they offered essentially the same ticket for two different prices. So, the lack of competition I think is making them complacent, let's hope that once the Swedish government operated Stockholm-Hamburg line starts operation, Snälltåget might feel the need to up their game too. Finally, for a "business" traveler or a person who's not just in it for the views, the train schedule is not optimal. Stockholm to Berlin is "OK", departing at around 4pm and arriving in Berlin around 8-9am is fine, you technically can spend some hours working in Stockholm and then enjoy a relaxing evening. While in Berlin you arrive just in time to start your day - whether it's work or leisure. The return trip however is a pretty raw deal. Departing from Berlin is fine, the departure is pretty late in the day, but you arrive in Stockholm about 14:30 which means you've lost most of the day, for business travelers it's useless and even for tourists or leisure travel it puts a real damper on things as you lose a huge chunk of the day. It would have been better if departure from Berlin was similar to Stockholm so that arrival could be in the early morning. I guess the length of the trip increased dramatically when the route shifted from the ferry to the Denmark line, which also forced a trip through Denmark, who are the only ones actually checking passports and at one point also covid related stuff. Neither German nor Swedish border police ever went on the train, only the Danes deemed this needed..ridiculous. One guy was thrown off the train in Denmark at 3am because he didn't have the right covid paperwork... not sure if he got to go do a test outside or had to stay behind. Poor bastard. Anyway, mixed reviews from me, I wish I could say great things, but other than it being a train and thus an amazing way to travel, Snälltåget, while having overall decent couchettes and a nice dining car part of the way, really was a below average experience, especially given some other train experiences I had around europe.

I was searching for something else on KZfaq but this video came up. Was very interesting to see as this train passes through my area and I don't really hear much about it so it's great to see your experience.

Thnx for the clip. This is the trip I'd like to take as well. Last time I was in Hamburg a few years ago, the station was being renovated. Glad to see that it was completed.--Charlie from Thailand.

Merci Thibault, moi je l'ai pris avec l'ancienne ligne, juste fou de les voir manoeuvrer les wagons pour le mettre sur le ferry, expérience folle, juste desagreable en été, vraie fournaise ce train.

It's correct that "snäll" is the Swedish word for "kind" - but in this context the word "snäll" is derived from the German word "schnell" (as in "Schnellzug"); thus the meaning simply is "fast train". "Snälltåg" is an older generic name for fast trains in Sweden; the name has been "revived" by this particular train operator though.

Cette voiture-restaurant a un look rétro encore accentué par les luminaires. Bon, la couleur des sièges jure un peu, mais elle est quand même très jolie. Merci pour ce beau voyage.

💖💖💖💖 I love this old rolling stock when it is properly maintained and taken care of. It has so much more atmosphere than many modern cars. And the restaurant car was amazing. And I think the prices are absolutely ok. This is Sweden, and we know it is not cheap but compared to the mediocre food and drinks menu of many other companies this looked great to me. Thanks again for sharing your experience with us. Happy travels.

Snälltåget is actually mistranlation from the german Schnellzug. Snälltåg in this case means fast train or Snabbtåg in swedish.

About the platform number: The track to be the same all year around is only something for small stations. In bigger stations there is a new track table after 6 months, but for the biggest stations the tracks are changed all 3 months due to seasonal trains, different times etc. After all maintenance leads to many track changes, especially at night, so always check the app, announcements and displays at the station

Another great video about beautiful trains and landscapes. It must be nice to live in a country where the government invests in such things and you don't have people writing graffiti all over the station walls and the trains themselves... or even stealing parts of the traintracks.

Sweden actually had B - and A - cars allowed to go to Copenhagen and was crossing by ferry Helsingør/Helsingborg. So similar passenger-cars was trafficking between Denmark and Sweden, they were taking that route until the early 1990's when "Kustpilen" (Danish build IC3 for SJ) took over.
