A playthrough of Ultra's 1990 action game for the NES, Snake's Revenge.
Snake's Revenge is one of a couple direct sequels that Konami created to the original Metal Gear game, and though it's not the "canonical" sequel - that honor goes to the MSX2 game Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - it does fair justice to the original. It's a game that a lot of people like to sneer at, but it pulls off its combination of stealth and action well while largely adhering to the spirit of the first game.
The development of Snake's Revenge reminds me of that of StarTropics. Both were created by Japanese studios specifically for western audiences, but neither were released for the Famicom's domestic market. It's pretty interesting to see how Japanese studios perceived and catered to the tastes of the American market, and Snake's Revenge makes for a good case study. Take that first image of Snake during the intro - he's the perfect image of 80s Hollywood steroid abuse, and John is the spitting image of Stallone in Rambo III.
Anyways, Snake's Revenge follows the same general format as Metal Gear, but instead of taking place across one huge zone, the game is broken up into isolated areas connected by cutscenes. I personally liked the change - it was better focused, and figuring it all out felt less daunting than in Metal Gear. The change has little impact on the overall challenge and mainly serves to drop the pretense of non-linearity in favor of a more streamlined experience, and I had no problem with that at all.
It looks absolutely fantastic for an NES game. The characters are more realistically proportioned, and the increased level of detail makes the small sprites more readily identifiable. Just check out Snake's muscles - Schwarzenegger would've killed to have such chiseled neon yellow drumstick biceps! The character portraits look great, the backgrounds are detailed, and there are a few impressive setpieces sprinkled throughout. The melodically-driven soundtrack is one of my favorites Konami did on the NES, too. It reminds me a lot of Mission: Impossible and Rollergames, especially when it ramps up in the action-heavy bits.
The game play is pretty good, overall. The overhead parts control better than they did in Metal Gear, and you again have tons of items at your disposal that provide options in how to deal with different threats. The English makes more sense this time around so there aren't any randomly indecipherable "clues," and even though the straight-line vision of the enemy guards isn't terribly realistic, it is mercifully consistent which helps keep the challenge reasonable.
The game isn't too hard until you get to the lead-up to the end. The pit-floors, the suicide bombers, and the bosses can be trying until you've learned them over the course of countless failed attempts, but its most divisive gameplay element seems to be the side-scrolling platformer segments. Early on, they're fine. The controls are super-stiff - like a hybrid of Castlevania and Rush'n Attack - but these parts become needlessly frustrating later on and end up feeling like unnecessary padding. It's a shame because they're the only major stumbling point in what is an otherwise excellent game that does the Metal Gear name a true solid.
Like with my video of the original NES Metal Gear ( • Metal Gear (NES) Playt... ), this is a brand new playthrough to replace my original video 720p upload.
And a fun bit of trivia: during the intro, Metal Gear is assigned a code number, "VRC-4". This is a reference to the VRC-4 series of memory mapper chips that Konami used in several of their Famicom games released between 1989 and 1991, including TMNT, Tiny Toons, Gradius 2, and the Wai Wai World games. Funnily enough, neither Metal Gear game shipped with a VRC chip: MG1 used UNROM, and Snake's Revenge used the MMC-1.

At a young age, I remember playing Metal Gear on the NES. It was pretty difficult, but I managed to finish it. When I found out about this game, I was obsessed and managed to also beat this. I absolutely love this series. It definitely stood apart from other games. I also love the jungle music. It's so badass.

How did you felt when you realize PS1/GBA made solid snake? I was born in 98 so I only experience solid snake first time in the GameCube which is the one for the Ps1 and it was fun! Then I started playing metal gear acid and the series spin offs for the psp, I haven’t played any new ones yet like the ones that came out for the ps3/ps4

@@srJaime98 It was cool to see the series evolve beyond a more basic 8-bit game. Although future titles evolved far beyond the NES versions, they did maintain the heart of the series. It's like a cinematic, survival, and espionage game.

Snake's Revenge might well be the best example in all of gaming of something that was pretty well liked by those who actually experienced it when it was new that is now universally reviled by those who mistake trivia for wisdom. Yes, we all know the story of Kojima on the bus with one of this games developers, but in it's time most of us didn't even know these games came from Japan let alone this one was a watered down version another exclusive to it. The AVGN didn't review this one, but it definitely feels like he did considering the learned opinions so many adopted on it.

I don't get it either, but the internet is one helluva echo chamber. It was better than a lot of the other action games releasing on the NES at the time.

@@NintendoCompleteSee, and I think I do get it. It's the black sheep oddball entry in a beloved series that "sucks". Not only do we get to say "fun fact: there's a lesser known terrible Metal Gear", but we also get an easy target to demonstrate that something otherwise excellent isn't perfect. Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Other M... we LOVE having that one we can all agree is bad. It makes us feel better for not having created anything ourselves.

Nah while not completely terrible it's still the worst of the series has to offer, so much flaws in game design. The Kojima story is just a cherry on top of how horrible Konami is but it's not really reflecting the game's quality, that's the whole another thing.

Still remember when i saw the cover for this game when it released, i was not entirely sure it was the sequel to Metal Gear which i loved back then but it had the same type of spelling and the name Snake so i assumed it was and when i played it i was not dissapointed at all. Thank you for making this video! I have been trying to get into this game after beating Metal Gear, and I could not figure out what to do in the first forest area! The screen at 4:52 stumped me because I did not know you could enter that screen without alerting the guards. I ended up killing the guards and then wandering around the screen while trying to use the transceiver radio, and couldn't progress! So far my main complaint about this game is how easy it is to instantly enter alert mode during screen transitions unless you have each screen's enemy/spotlight placement memorized.

Always thought this game was amazing. And I dont care what anyone says..... Metal Gear on NES doesn't deserve the shit it gets. Its nearly the exact same game as the original that got all the praise. Instead of the game starting in OuterHeaven..... you need to find it first by searching the jungle. Thats more bad ass if you ask me. The only complaint I had was there was no Metal Gear boss fight...instead you blow up the computer that controls it all. MG was probably stipped from the game due to limitations. I can deal with the little differences. Snakes Revenge is a better game than both in my opinion.
