I just read an article today about some researchers who accidentally discovered that a species of frog is using elephant footprints as breeding puddles in the forests of Myanmar. The footprints can last up to a year and collect rainwater which the frogs use to lay eggs in predator-free puddles. They can also use these trackways to get from one wet area to another, thus spreading their population and gene pool. Of course with elephants being endangered it will affect the frogs' reproduction.

Hodor the King some frogs can disperse poison from their skin so saying frogs are harmless isn’t necessarily true. If u were joking pls woosh me if not then idk.

Not to understate Emily's ability with animals but based on my experience with Gray tree frogs they tend to be fairly docile. If you pick them up and hold them gently they will often settle down and relax in your hands. Once I found a gravid female in my pool. When I picked her up she hugged onto my thumb and nuzzled my hand bettwen my thumb and finger. If I hadn't put her into a tree so i could work on the pool I honestly think she might have clung to my thumb for nearly an hour. The next day I had to save her eggs from the pool. Now her babies are four weeks old and all but two have left the water. Here's to hoping they've got their mother's personality.

@@unknownnstuff9635 He is still young, it takes time and lots of TLC before they can overcome their instinct to be scared of everything. But keep taking good care of him and in time he will start to realize your not planing on eating him and will begin to trust you. Good luck!

There are roads/highways here in Canada (mostly in national parks) that are designed to help animals safely travel across without risk of being hit, the roads have tall fences along the sides and the grassy bridges over the roads for safe crossing, there’s even a few places with tunnels under the roads specifically for smaller animals like amphibians to cross safely as well, there’s still many places without these but it’s nice that some areas are starting to implement them. Obviously it doesn’t stop every animal from being hit but it does help many of them.

I see the effects of habitat loss for my local amphibians. Recently a new neighborhood was constructed next to mine in a wetland area near a large creek system, and the two Eastern American Toads that I just got are both rescues and were likely headed towards my neighbors pool, which would have poisoned them because of the chlorine. They now have a temporary enclosure while I build a new/bigger one and a stable diet, so they are doing much better.

You know you can diy one with a large container lid or discarded plexi, anything transparent-ish and just rest it on there with a rock on top for wind.. you can put two screws halfway into the house "wall" if there's nothing to rest it on..

@@3llevate I think you are thinking of something else. A window well is for if you have a window into a basment or other part of a house which is partially below ground. The soil around the window is dug out and a brick or metel barrier is built around the outside of the ditch to keep it from collapsing in on itself. It's a great way to allow a subterranean room to get natural light but it's easy for small animals to fall into the open ditch and become trapped. That's why Emily said to add a cover or a ramp. My grandparents house had several and the cats liked to sleep in them but they were always able to get themselves out. It was me that got stuck in one once when I tried to "save" the cat.

Last year I saw a tiny Italian Tree Frog (Hyla intermedia) in the backyard of my house at the sea jumping on a lamp to catch tiny insects. The most awesome thing it that this frog was REALLY small (about 1.5 cm) and the lamp was 40 cm tall! The force in those little legs is incredible!

I was educated this evening because I always thought it was the other way around; toads having teeth. Also, the bloopers were freaking hilarious. Guess that tree frog let you know what he thought of your little get together....😂

Back in the early 2000s, when I was in the 4th and 5th grade me and my parents used to raise frogs from tadpoles until they were mature enough for release. Really cute these little things are. I've been thinking of picking up the hobby again after so long after finding an old fridge and barrel swarming with small tadpoles earlier today.

well I guess my house must be a sanctuary in Mass breeding ground for these guys because there are zillions of them around my place in the small 15 acre plot we have at night you can find about 10 to 15 toads every 10 feet! And they're all very well fed because they are huge. and every summer the ponds are filled with little toad strings. 🐸

I found a gray tree frog that loved to hang out in my flower pot in my childhood home’s back deck. I named the frog delphinium, which was the flower I always found it hanging out on. It made me happy to see it hanging out, and influenced gray tree frogs to be my favorite amphibian.

And sometimes you don't need to buy them. Or even feed them unless you feel like it. There have been generations upon generations of toads living in the window well of my family's farm. It's pretty easy to catch them and play (gently) with them before putting them back. My niece and her friends *love* the toads. I know what she said about window wells being dangerous, but somehow this window well just makes the perfect little habitat for them.

Personally I think the ramp in the window well is the better idea because unfortunately in some areas Window Wells serve as a Fire Escape from the basement if you have bedrooms down there. I imagine putting a lid over them would go against the fire code.

The lid just rests there.. it's not a sealed lid or anything.. at most it'll have hinges on one side to open like a trap door.. but not everyone can afford one so you can just grab a plexi or a clear container lid, anything.. or make that little ramp :)

I guess it will be fine if it's not to heavy to be pushed open... I personally wouldn't use a solid lid I'd rather use a frame with some fine mesh to allow ventilation. We have window wells on our house (they're small basement windows high up on the wall only meant to let in some light and allow letting in fresh air). My parents covered them with mesh as we had mice in them and once even a bunny (it survived and was lifted out and it ran away). The window wells are only the size of a large door mat since the windows themselves are so small they obviously don't serve as an escape and since they are smooth walled plastic contraptions they already come with a lattice cover but the gap between the struds were big enough for young mice to squeeze through and there was a gab between the lattice and the wall. I guess that's were the young rabbit fell in... The mesh works like a charm and we never had any animals trapped in there.

Toads at my barn have been kind of confused since the neighbors harvested the trees on their property. We have a wet area around the water spicket in one barn so they've decided that it is a great place to be. They might even be reproducing around it because I see tons of tiny babies moving around. I've been wondering if I was right thinking they're toads but they definitely look like the toads. Tiny toads are cuties!

Natural compost is better for your plants and wildlife

Fertilizer isn't innately horrible. Any compound meant to change the levels of phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium in the soil is a fertilizer. The problem is really the other chemical boosters for plant growth. You can use old coffee grounds, egg shells, or manures fairly safely.

Also to avoid needing as much fertilizer recycle your grass clippings: cut the grass, but don't collect the clippings. They will break down to return to the soil. You might have to make adjustments to your lawnmower to do it. It is called mulching with your lawnmower.

My fiance and I caught a grey tree frog in our own house about two weeks ago. We've been keeping him in a tiny water-soaked moss-laden terrarium ever since. I would have released him into in the wooded area across the street if he didn't accept any feeders, but he now eats crickets and dubia roaches from my forceps.

I have an exit ramp/safety ladder in our pool for frogs/bugs etc to get out for this reason! They’re cheap & easy to get on amazon for anyone with pools!

great idea. I remember staying in a resort once and poor frogs kept dying in their pool because they couldn't get out. I managed to save one out with my hands but the other poor one had already died

There is some European toads (I live in spain) that I see all the time, they're called midwife toads. They carry their eggs on their backs.

Good to know. The leaping one yesterday was a frog then :D I was mainly curious about this video because I found (what I assume to be) a toad the other day with green legs with patterns on them, that was a first. It was cute, but as I was walking my dog I left the little toad alone :P We have lots of little frogs and toads out where I live. Earlier this year we had a whole horde of super tiny ones I was afraid to step on them. They were barely the size of the nail on my pinkie and they were going in every direction :)
