Have you ever seen a 5-legged frog? How about a toad missing an eye? Abnormalities are becoming more prevalent in wild amphibians, and today I discuss why! In this video learn about the most commonly seen deformities in amphibians, and the primary causes for them. Then learn how you can help amphibians in your backyard! Plus, meet a couple of my rescued malformed amphibians.
Have you seen a deformed amphibian? Report it here: www.usgs.gov/centers/npwrc

When I was a girl my brothers and I would spend hours outside in the deep ditches around where we lived. We found deformed frogs all the time. Some would have open ulcers on their faces. There we were barefoot in knee deep grungy water catching deformed frogs. Can’t believe we never caught anything or developed diseases when we got older. I always wondered why the frogs were in such bad shape.

Last night I was doing the laundry in my basement, and I almost stepped in what looked like a ball of dust and debris in front of my washer. My foot touches it and I step back. At first my eyes couldn't make out what it was I thought maybe it was a dead mouse covered in dirt balled up. Then I looked closer, and it was a Fowler toad covered in dryer lint, so I cleaned her off and took her outside. Went back down to finish the laundry, and found 2 more by the dryer. The night before I found a woolly bear while I was shaking out a blank to put in the wash. My basement is turning into an animal sanctuary.

Snake Discovery I have a question about that. I’m pretty familiar with most reptiles and amphibians, but I’m wondering about what a pixie frog’s environment should be. Most people seem to keep them in a tank with eco earth and a large water dish. However, I have noticed that a local pet store near me has one in a tank that is completely covered in about 2-3” of water. Is this safe for Pixie frogs?

The people that my parents bought their house from used to spray the entire lawn so much that no flowers would grow or anything but since we’ve been here there has been so many amphibians hanging around. Also once my dad was digging holes for fence posts and a bunch of dark frogs came out of the ground and I was wondering if you would know what kind of frog that would be.

I️ immediately thought of this too because a lot of my queer friends joke about how silly it is that some guy thinks chemicals in the water are turning the frogs gay. Also I’m going to Like the comment so you can have 69 likes, you’re welcome.

The school that discovered the deformed frog was actually the high school I go to. Minnesota New Country School in Henderson MN. It was the biggest thing to ever happen to our school. Our school mascot is the five legged frog based on how our school started. One of my projects was about Herpetogogy and I had Emily come to our school. It was the best moment of my life.
