@@jasonpollard7157 I have tried several times to give SnapOn a chance. But every dealer I have encountered were rude, arrogant, and trash talked every other brand. That is if I could even manage to get a rep to stop at our place. The lest one I contacted I told him there were several of us at the shop interested in buying tools and the rep said since we were not already regular customers that we had to come to his home after his rout was over to shop. No deal.

I don't think the Icon will replace Snap-On, but I've been saying for while now HF is replacing the niche market that was Sears tool department.

This is 100% spot on. I’m an auto hobbyist and do all the maintenance work on cars. When my local Sears closed I was left with only the auto parts store tools, which are decent but not a great variety. Then I found Harbor Freight and have not been disappointed either their Pittsburgh line. In particular their sockets, impacts, and ratchets. Perfect for use in my garage.

Good video, I have a little experience I'd like to share that shocked me, over the winter I lost most of my tools in a fire, 30+ years of tools in fact, I couldn't even begin to tell you how many 3/8 ratchets I had, tons of the junk tear drop craftsman, a couple snap on, no icon, but I did have a couple of Pittsburgh, here's where my story gets really interesting, a week later I had to work on one of my vehicles, I luckily had a lot of my expensive milwaukee power tools in my truck, along with a small metric and standard 3/8 impact socket rails that I keep in my milwaukee bag, well, I found myself in a spot that I needed a ratchet as no impacts would fit and my cordless ratchet did get burned up, so I'm out there in the snow, prying my "spare ratchet" drawer open to try and find one I can get to work for what was ultimately 1 bolt I couldn't get to, EVERYTHING aside from one ratchet had some type of aluminum and/or plastic parts that had melted and that one ratchet was a plastic/rubber handled Pittsburgh, minus the plastic on the handle itself of course, all ratchets were in the same drawer, and suffered the same conditions of heat, harbor freight for the win on that one, although I was able to rebuild one of the snap on's, and used it yesterday, but on that cold winter day the Ole Pittsburgh put a smile on my face on what was and still is a otherwise really depressing situation, at nobody's fault but my own, and although I'm still to this day going through and trying to salvage what I can that, and it's doubtful that I'll be able to rebuild even a small portion of what I had accumulated throughout the years, that Pittsburgh will be a wall hanger for years to come

It isn’t a snap On for sure. It isn’t meant to be. In my eyes it is just another brand. They made a very nice ratchet for the price point they are in. There’s clearly differences inside the ratchet as you seen in the video. The guts in the 3/8” are about the size of the snap On 1/4” but it is a nice ratchet for $40
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but is the Snap-On really that much better for how much more it costs? A Snap-On 3/8s swivel head costs more than twice as much as the ICON ratchet. I can have a decent night at a strip bar for the difference in cost. In life you need to prioritize. I guess hung over I would appreciate a quieter ratchet though. All you really need to do is open them up and put a dab of grease in them to make them quieter. Something better than wheel bearing grease does work better. The Super Lube synthetic they sell at Harbor Freight is nice.

Great video Clay. Hamilton is a stand up guy. For all the people who complain about HF tools being made in China or Taiwan and they only want to support American companies. Harbor Freight is an American company and, with more than 1000 stores, they employ a lot of Americans. I’ll wager these same people buy and use a lot of other foreign made products without ever giving it a second thought. I simply don’t understand why so many people hate on them. Harbor Freight fills a void, making it possible for guys who might otherwise not be able to afford a reasonable number of tools to get a decent quality box and some tools without breaking the bank. Since they’ve begun improving the quality of their tools, that makes them even more viable for the diy guys and for young guys just entering any trade that requires them to own tools. Just today, I needed a rivnut tool and I knew HF had one I could use. I left work, hopped in my truck and 15 minutes and $20 later I was on my way back to the shop to finish a job that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to do and make it look 1st class. BTW, I see a lot of people in the HF store wearing tool truck logo shirts and jackets. I’ve never heard a HF employee rag on them for it. Everybody needs to calm down and worry about their own stuff instead of directing so much hatred toward an American company for trying to help other Americans save some money.

I’ve used snap on ratchets for years and after watching your videos on the new ICON ratchet I honestly do not see a difference in the quality between the ICON ratchet and a snap on ratchet. It looks like a snap on, it has fine tooth, it held up to over 250 ft lbs of torque and it has a life time warranty. I’m impressed and feel that harbor freight is making some extremely smart decisions. A good tech who might not be able to afford snap ons high prices may be able to get similar quality tool at a lower cost.

@Emerald lx everything can break especially if used incorrectly. I'm sure ICON is more than adequate for any competent mechanic. There's usually more to a job than just putting a tool on a fastener and pulling for all you're worth. Doing that is likely to cause more harm than good. Because fasteners often break sooner than tools do.

What you have to realize is that Snap-On has institutional customers who have essentially unlimited budgets and price does not matter. They simply want the best they can possibly get. Think the military industrial complex. Which includes the military itself. They use all Snap-On. They have a three quarters of a trillion dollars a year budget. After buying all the bombs, bullets and beans they need that still leaves a lot left over to buy tools with.

Paul Frederick true story....I know my general mechanics toolbox that I was issued in the army was all snapon. In the supply system the gov pays over $10k for that tool kit. You could easily stock a kit with the same tools for under $1500 from any normal tool brand.
@1pcfred
@1pcfred 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelardoin4260 the US Army is a tradition based institution. They used Snap-On in year one so they're going to keep using what won them the war. If it ain't broke give it its regularly scheduled maintenance. And the Army doesn't haggle over prices. They pay MSRP. Which may partly explain why Snap-On's prices are what they are. As long as they can say it with a straight face the US Army will shell out for it. But at the same time Snap-On can't have two different pricing structures. One for the Army and one for everyone else with everyone else getting a better price. That would be wrong?
