It is not so surprising. There is a lot of this insanely good musicians in metal pulling some stuff at this level of musicianship nowadays and for quite a few decades now. A lot of the technical death metal musicians early on adapted a lot of stuff from jazz and have made it into the ridiculously complex music it is today. That's not the only genre, even some of the more mainstream newer metal bands have some fine musical skills.

Just so you know, Larnell Lucas, Edit: Lewis on drums, wasn't a regular member of the band at the time. Their regular drummer, Sput had a passport issue making it so he couldn't make this gig, so Larnell had to learn the songs in something like 3 days IIRC. The fact that he was able to keep up as hard as he did with Cory's mostly improvised solo is insane.

Finally!! Snarky Puppy is incredible man, definitely a band that musicians tend to flock to. Just insane musical ability and really good composing. The bass player, Michael League, is the band leader and composer for many if not most of SP's music. The final product is always a crazy collaborative effort from all these super talented musicians, but League plays a big part in how well-written many of these songs are. Fun fact, the drummer Larnell Lewis was brought in at the very last minute to fill in for SP's usual drummer, Robert "Sput" Searight (though he's sat in with SP a few times on tours). He basically learned all of the songs in the span of a few hours, then performed them live all week. "After a last moment call, Larnell arrived the next day at Amsterdam airport at 7:00 am. Heading straight for the studio to set up the drums, having an intense and sped up rehearsal session in the afternoon, and locking the nine tracks to be recorded for the dvd that very same evening. An enormous achievement considering the recordings covered four days: from Monday until Thursday with two shows a night, all being recorded for the upcoming Snarky Puppy dvd."

What a feeling it must be to have a song come to life the way this one did. When Michael League wrote this song, I'm sure that what resulted from this performance far exceeded what he was hearing in his head when he imagined it complete. That is likely a once in a lifetime combination or writing, arranging, producing and spontaneous performance of generationally great musicianship. Michael League is in a very small group of the very best producers ever.

Incredible bit of info: at the time of this recording this actual piece was completely new to the band. They only got a rudimentary score a few days ahead and had like 2 days of rehearsal (not only this tune but an album worth of it) and do the arrangements. Actually, the drummer arrived on the day of the first show (they recorded several live shows). IIRC, this was recorded at the second show.

This is generally how a Snarky Puppy concert goes down. It's insane talent. The solos played by Chris on saxophone and Cory on keys were improvised on the spot. @@jamelakajamal This video is from when they recorded the album "We Like It Here" so you can just google who played on that record. But the keyboard player was Cory Henry who sadly doesn't play with them anymore. Snark is an interesting group because besides the Bassist, a couple of the horn players and one of the keyboard players the lineup is constantly changing.

@@jamelakajamal Another fun fact, the drummer in this recording (Larnell Lewis) learned all the music they recorded on super short notice because the other drummer had a conflict.

Shaun Martin is the dude who couldn't keep it together when Cory was wildin' out on the keys. You GOTTA check out Shaun Martin's solo stuff. Madiba, Lotus, The Yellow Jacket.

The fact that you came upon these guys makes me very happy. I had the same response to them as well. My Navy brother from NYC put me up on them. They are in constant rotation now. You need to hear the jam with Layla Hathaway.

That was straight up music history being made. Corey Henry and Larnell Lewis, two musical geniuses pushing each other higher enough that the other keyboardist just straight took off his headphones and was like "I quit, I will never be that good."

Jamel says "The instruments are doing all the talking". Robert "Sput" Searight, their usual drummer, said pretty much the same thing in an interview on one of their DVDs.

Also if you like this check out Return to Forever. This was one of the first super jazz fusion groups formed in the late 70's. It was Chic Cora, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola. Another good one is Weather Report. Jaco was beast on fretless bass. Gone to soon
