This sneaky gator comes out of nowhere and scares the hell out of me on this 1000 foot pond mulching job! I have never seen an alligator in January before so this is definitely a first for me and it scared me for a second LOL!

I agree with you about how pretty the ponds and property are. Did you know that bald cypress does not have growth rings and the knees from the roots only grow in fluctuating water levels? Cypress grows about one foot per 100 years.

As TLC might say, "[I'll] stick to the [gator-free] rivers and lakes that I'm used to [here in the 864]." 😄 There's something satisfying about watching these videos. Thanks for sharing, and stay safe down there!

Thank you for your reply. Love your videos. "Scare the crap out of me", "scares the hell out of me" and "kinda scares me" are not all equivalent. The third expression is much less intense then the first two. Great videos.

The hydraulic pumps have greatly improved since 1999. I for a R.R. contactor and used a 690L that had another engine just to run the hydraulic pump for the barrel shredder. Fun job it was to bad the 9-11 bull snot shutdown that nice pay check. Besides the company closing. Have fun, use the seatbelt, and keep the the top hatch closed so no critters fall in your lap. We had two operators have cottonmouths come visit. Many times opening the door to have 1 or 2 looking eye to eye. It scared to snot out of ya even when you thought you were ready. I do enjoy watching and hearing that barrel spin. Lord be with y'all and blessing each day.

It ain't the machine they are responding to. It's the debris you're kicking off into the water. The vibration is what it's coming to. Water + movement = food.

The sound of the machine is either similar to their mating calls or some kind of territorial noise they make to scare off intruders of their own species.

The stuff splashing in the water is what attracts the gators. They think that it is a distressed animal. Hence a food source. Also with all the overgrowth that area is probably where he would get out of the water to sun. They don't stay in the water 24/7. Also it has been a pretty warm winter. Reptiles hibernate when it is cold. Cooler weather will slow them down but it has not been cold enough to really cause any lengthy hibernation this year.

Mulch that gator and all the snakes...👍 I don't like pit vipers. Gators taste good. It's probably illegal to hurt anything. In Idaho, you can kill pretty much anything if it's on your land. Especially snakes.

I am no gator expert or anything of the sort, so, this is just spitballing, but, I think he have have thought the debris from the mulcher was small critters jumping into the water. I do know, the older, and bigger they get, the smarter they get, or the more accustomed to people they get, or even the less afraid of people they get.
