Walmart is the biggest retailer in America. Here are some sneaky ways Walmart gets you to spend more money than you were initially intending.
------------------------------------------------------
#Walmart #Retail #BusinessInsider
Following is a transcript of the video:
With over 5,000 stores in the U.S. and over $500 billion in revenue, Walmart is officially the biggest retailer in America. If you're going into Walmart, you're on a treasure hunt to find the best bargains out there. And while you're busy finding good deals, you may not realize that Walmart uses sneaky tactics to make you spend more money than you were initially intending.
Once you enter Walmart, you're greeted with big shopping carts, mentally preparing you to fill it all up with things. And then, you're bombarded with huge signs with price tags. This might be obvious, but these big signs can be spotted very easily and people are more likely to gravitate towards them. But something that may not be so obvious is this. The actual price tags follow the good old psychology marketing strategy of odd-even pricing. Prices like $4.93 and $6.84 are just below whole numbers like $5 and $7, making the prices seem like a bargain. Since we're trained to read left to right, when we see $4.93, most would think it's $4 as opposed to $5.
While you're roaming through the aisles of Walmart, you'll also spot their Rollback prices. This is how Walmart advertises a lower price on an item. But a Rollback item is not quite a clearance or a sale item. It's an item that has been lowered in price for other reasons, like overstock, for example. Rollback prices only last for 90 days so when customers see that tag, they may be more likely to purchase the item because it's a little cheaper than it was before and you don't know how long until it'll Rollback to the original price.
You'll also see the words "Everyday Low Price" plastered everywhere, constantly reminding your subconscious that you're getting low prices at Walmart. We spent almost two hours at this Walmart and saw probably over 100 of these signs. You might see something you weren't intending on buying, like chocolate, for example, and buy it anyway because, as the signs constantly remind you, it probably costs less here than at your local store.
And that's another thing. It feels like Walmart has everything. Fishing rods, bicycles, cleaning supplies, sporting goods, clothing, food and beverages. You name it, Walmart has a wide range for you to chose from so you're bound to find something you'll buy. Not only does Walmart tend to have a wide selection of a particular product, but their giant layouts also make it possible to have everything you need related to a particular product. Let's say you're going to Walmart to get a tent for camping. You'll likely stumble across something else in that section that you might have forgotten about or think you might need, like a lantern or impulse buys like an extra sleeping bag.
We also can't forget about the seasonal items Walmart offers. It's January, so you know Walmart is going be stocked up with Valentine's Day goods for you to buy, reminding you the holiday is coming up and that you might as well take care of it while you're there. Just look at all these items. Heart-shaped trays, cute paper cups, wine glasses with cheesy phrases. There are just so many items for Valentine's Day that you didn't even know existed.
And because Walmart is more of a one-stop shop, people have this mentality to stock up on bargains in one trip, spending hours roaming through the aisles. The music they play is partially to blame. Ever notice the type of music that's playing? It's usually calm, soothing, and slow or sometimes, top hits from the radio. Either way, the music they play is designed to make you spend more time in the store and hopefully spend more money, too.
But even if you are aware of all these sneaky tactics, you may still end up buying more than you intended to because you just can't beat those everyday low prices.
Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more.

So... What tricks does Walmart use to sell stuff?.. This video basically just said they do the basics of every other department store which everyone knows already. "Walmart has a lot of signs and carries a wide range of stuff". You don't say... "Walmart has good prices". Okay, and?.. Competitive prices aren't exactly a complex revolutionary marketing trick. "Walmart prices things so that people mentally round down". I never understood why anyone would round down a price, but I don't think I have ever seen any store that doesn't do this. "Walmart plays music that is calming or popular". You mean like 95% of stores that own a radio?

ManFred TheLast Yeah, every store does all these, or a least some of them. No store has every item at the dollar mark $4.00 $5.00 etc. There is often 98 or 90 cents tacked on. What store doesn't have music playing? Our small town grocery does.

And why are they broke? China Mart has eliminated their job, either by causing decent paying local merchants to close (losing jobs), or offering China made products causing US manufactures to close, or despecing products making them worthless (good for a year). I won't go into how we the people subsidies ChinaMart buy paying for their employees assistance programs. Never go to ChinaMart.

As a child I figured out that marketing tactic with pricing. I would round the number up and tell my mom “it’s $20”. She would freak out and say “NO!” But if I said the price is 19.98 she would let me get something. It irritated me not being able to round up with this woman.

As a cashier at Walmart, I often get customers say they only came for one or two items but got a full cart as that's the point of Walmart haha. Also another tactic my store does is instead of listing $1 of one item, they instead list 2 for $2 or 4 for $4, making people not only think they're getting a good deal but also have to get more to get that deal when it will still be the same unit price
@richstrobel
@richstrobel 10 ай бұрын
I do the math and buy the one item if that's all I want. To me it's annoying when stores offer a better price but only if you buy two. I wonder how many sales they lose because a lot of people only want one? I haven't bought something many times because of that.

I've never considere a $4.93 item as being a $4 item. I round up to $5. The lighting is part of the shopping atmosphere that marketers are keenly aware of. Every time we shop at a department store, we have become victims of psychological manipulation. From the signage, music selection, size of the carts, width of the aisles, and the lighting are all used to prompt us to impulse buy. This is why LISTS are very important! They keep you on task and prevent you from busting your budget.

Speaking from my former retail security history, depends on the city's crime rate, each and every big box retailer have different of security levels. some only have 1 or 2 LPs leaving most theft or conflict resolution to senior mgmt and only call police on need be but sadly most a level 3 to 5 out of 5 rating. I have seen a few that actively post their local cops inside the store or active patrolling in the parking lots. A few used to be known for the fearless we will tackle you asset protection teams but a number of lawsuits seems to have tamed their ways to more of hands-off approach but over the top customer service hounding to flush out the would be lifter to surrender the product. By utilizing the local police 1st it helps shift the immediate liability to the cops if things go sideways saving the retailer's insurance premium costs and on the payout on claims resulting in the all important better net-to-bottom profits

My overspending stopped when I started ordering online and then driving to the store for them to put the items in my car. I not only saved lot of time by not wondering around the store, but I saved plenty of money by buying only what I ordered online - there were no temptations to pick up other items as I walked through the aisles. Saved me both time and money to order online.

This is the very first time I'm looking at the inside of a Walmart since I live in Australia. I am now suddenly very glad we don't have these in Australia, because good lord they're terrifyingly huge. I didn't expect to get agoraphobia from the inside of a building today but there you go.

0:30 Uhh like literally *all* supermarkets, because you know, people travel to supermarkets (usually outskirts) to not just a buy candy bar but do their weekly shopping. Nothing in the video was unique to Walmart anyway but to supermarkets in general, did she write the script? Jheez, quality content.

Oh, That was the reason our people around here in my country, Philippines, like OFWs and Travellers had much to fill in their balikbayan boxes, luggages and lots to give in to their loved ones... Low price chocolates, nifty gifts under rollback prices and some things you can't resist. Thank you Walmart!

When I shop at stores I always round up and add 50 cents every time I grab another item. By the end I’m always only a couple dollars off and I know this. Somehow it helps me mentally prepare for the price.

Walmart is one of our regular grocery stops. We've shopped at the same three stores enough to know what's cheaper at which store. In our area Walmart is actually the cheapest option for a lot of things that arent food items.

A good friend of mine shops at Walmart wherever he is. He's from NYC (no Walmart there!) but then lived in NJ and now in DE. He came to visit me in SE FL and we went to the Walmart (less than 2 miles away) for something (don't remember what). We walked in, he glanced around and then knew exactly where to go. I was surprised as not only was the store huge, but I typically have to wander around for 5-15 minutes to track down what I'm looking for (I rarely shop). He said all Walmarts are laid out the same but some are mirror images. The one near me has groceries on the left as you walk in. So the question for BI - is that true, or has he just been in fewer Walmarts than I thought?
