I always wondered if this game had any special chip or it just simply well optimized. Unlike most of the shmups in the platform, this one only has slowmo when some of those weird background effects appear (and not all the time lol)... or at least it's not as present as annoying

It does have an extra chip to aid in rendering all the sprite and effects but I forget what it's called. The only shmup on the system that runs at a rock solid frame rate without enhancement chips is Super Aleste I think.

What is the story of the game? I never see the franchise of Macross but when i was a kid i always play this game. I'm curious and specially for the last level, the girl with blue hair and that strange giant baby boss.

The game is more of an extended universe/side story, added from the actual TV series/movie. So most of the enemies and bosses don't exist in the original anime. The blue haired girl is Lynn/Lin Minmei/Minmay (spelling changes, depending on who translating from the katakana). She dates Hikaru in the beginning of the story, but they end up breaking up as she focuses on her idol/actress career. Her singing entrances and wins over the fighting aliens (the Zentradi, alien humanoid giants), which ultimately helps mankind to win the war against the hostiles. Asides from trying to survive the alien invasion, the main story of Macross is whether Hikaru ends up with Minmei or Misa Hayase. The other 2 playable characters, Max/Maxmillion Genius/Jenius and Millia get married and have kids by the end of Macross (one of their daughters is the main heroine of Macross 7). Hikaru was the captain of his squadron, with Max being a new recruit under Hikaru's command; though general concensus is that Max is the best pilot of the series. Millia is actually part of the attacking aliens, but Max, beating her in combat multiple times, wins her over.

The reason it didn't make it to the west was because of Harmony Gold holding the copyrights to everything Macross made it a legal pain in the ass.
