It all boils down to the same problem in India - overpopulation. And overpopulation coupled with unequal wealth distribution. So people need to fight it out with each other for every resource, be it education, resources, life hence the intense competition. And there is always an industry to service the privileged section because they can afford and it helps them beat the competition. The Same logic applies to why corruption is so widespread in our culture

Biswa is so perceptive and socially aware, that's what makes him a great comedian. And yeah, I passed ICSE in 2009- Dalal was blue. My sister passed in 2015 and it was still blue. Dalal was the first book where I first became familiar with blurbs XD

5:09 "I am at the top part of the bell curve" Which actually means that he is an average middle class person. A bell curve a distribution of data centered at mean value. Which can be interpreted as some property on x-axis (apparently money or privilege here) and the Y-axis shows the frequency (or the number of people having the money or privilege) of that property. So naturally average or mean has the greatest frequency and it makes top part of bell curve. He should have said he is at the rich bottom edge of bell curve. Now you can like this comment so that more people get the same enlightenment and then even Nevill will have to read this comment.

Few facts. 1. It's approximately 15 lakh ppl writing IITJEE, of which 15000 get an IIT rank. (Biswa's point). 2. The dropout rate of IITs is very low. Due to peer and parental pressure, kids don't opt to drop out and IIT system gives them up to 2 extra years to complete their degree requirements. (Neville's point) 3. Sad fact. Even a degree from an IIT doesn't 'set' your life. You need to become employable or become an entrepreneur. 4. Extending on the previous point, only 7% of the Engineering graduates are employable material. So, parents take note of what the kids' aptitude and interest is in; rather than jumping the engineering/medicine bandwagon.

15000 get an IIT rank, but not all get in IIT's. IIT's have less 10000 seats!
@brijeshhota9293

Now they've 20000 seats. But trust me going for University of Waterloo rather than any IIT or NIT (which I could not have, cuz I scored so bad in mains & advance) of my life. + There's this flexibility of choosing & doing what we want during our undergraduate program cuz of various coops. We seriously lack this in INDIA

Annie It got lost in all his excitement. But what he meant was that once the top tier gets to all the colleges and the dust settles you will be able to do what you really want to do as you will break free from parental pressure that science padho, engineering karo and all. But I dunno if I am right! He didn't explain very well.
@adityapillai3197

I guess if I am to put Neville's point in a different perspective, what he meant was that the moment we start having having tuitions/coaching classes for arts such as tuitions for stand up comedy is when we lose interest along with all the rules and money involved in the same, which fortunately doesn't happen in Indian because we don't take arts seriously hence there is a lot of freedom to mould the craft in the manner that we'd like

Prashant Malani He is potraying the positive side of 'Indian Education System' And I think He Did It Very Well
@prashantmalani823
@prashantmalani823 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. He used his personal example as representative of what happens to a majority of people in India, whereas that is clearly not the case (lots of kids still don't have viable career options in liberal arts). His eventual point wasn't even about the Indian Education System; it was that there are options *because* Liberal Arts education isn't streamlined or "capitalized" (in fact at 3:17 he goes so far as to say that "the liberal arts education system doesn't exist") . And, as an aside, to counter Neville's assertion, I don't see any issue with learning Shakespeare by translating it into Odiya. If adaptation and translation is good enough for Kurosawa and Vishal Bhardwaj, surely it's good enough for people speaking Odiya.

@anilatarannum
@anilatarannum 6 жыл бұрын
Prashant Malani Can you please explain his point? By liberal arts, I understand education in History, Literature, Economics (taught as arts in India, science almost everywhere abroad) philosophy and so on. I found his assertion exactly opposite of what the ground reality is. There is a very mainstream education system for the liberal arts in India, though it isn't valued much (going against his assertion of no systematic liberal arts education, I think that's what his point was) whereas any career opportunities in the liberal arts is SEVERELY limited as we don't place much value in it, so research and theoretical studies are highly undervalued (again counter to his point of lot of opportunities in careers in liberal arts). I mean what was he even saying?!
@prashantmalani823
@prashantmalani823 6 жыл бұрын
Annie Honestly I can't. I was merely trying to make sense of what was said. I'm all for differing view points if they are backed by some fact, but his argument here clearly isn't. I think you summarized what he was attempting(quite poorly) to explain, quite well.

Indian education has been reduced to a point that anywhere in the timeline of the education, you are preparing for something. 10th, then 12th, then college, then placements, or higher education. Moreover, the people outside select organisations are considered unfit for a genuine pursuit of knowledge. The major problem with learning today is, it's too hard to bring out grit. The zest of learning isn't matched because teachers are rare embarking their knowledge for the knowledge itself. It's always an exam. We should do away with preparing people and, start them on guilt free learning. Like, learn because you want to, not because you have to.

I went for this private group tuitions for 11th science. Teacher’s teaching method was amazing, copy solved examples from textbook and try to solve questions on your own. Same thing for physics, write concepts from books and understand it by yourself. And that tuition was overpriced af. He literally taught me that you need to learn things on your own.
