These micro switch thumb sticks are still the gold standard for fighting games when it comes to control pads. There was some made for PS2 and PS3, and outside of that only PDP and some very hard to find 3rd party companies have ever bothered using this over a dpad. What a shame.

I love this type of stuff Chris. Well done to the guy who implemented this, you have an engineer's brain for sure. That clicking sound for the joystick is just epic. I'd want all my controllers to sound like this; I don't care if it annoyed anyone else.

Nice one - talk about making your own jigsaw puzzle! I'm sure you know this but the old PC joysticks (the ones that connected to your sound card) use the same size connector as the Neo Geo Joystick. This meant two things - firstly you could buy PC Joystick extension cables and use them to extend the Neo controller cables (sometimes you had to shave the plastic a little to make it fit), and secondly you could use those same cables to build your own arcade sticks as they are just switch to ground like JAMMA. i.e no control chip needed. At the time PC Joystick extension cables were very cheap so I was able to convert a third party megadrive arcade stick to work with the Neo Geo using this method quite easily.

I got the DIY parts from him way back when he first showed these off. :) I was already working on my own design but when I saw his I thought "why reinvent the wheel?" His prices were reasonable enough though I would love it if he releases the files to print yourself. :)

excellent vid man. just finished my second day as a bench tech and I have to say I am loving it. I was nervous as hell but it was unwarranted for the most part. still tons I don't know but they seem quite willing to teach. its more cable and satellite tv infrastructure equipment. gain amplifiers many things I don't fully understand smh. but the repairs seem easy mainly fried power supplies and anything really crazy I am sure the guys there will help me. I think you for your word of encouragement the other day. They really helped me to calm down some lol.

This is a disappointing to all SNK fans for the new NeoGeo Mini Pad! A disgrace to SNK to not use the micro-switch thumbstick on their new one!! The old SNK hardware staff were and always respect their consumers. I hope the current SNK hardware staff would watch this video to learn about their SNK fans' dignity.

Haven't finished yet, but the reason you were having issues putting it back together was because you still had the thumbstick cap on. If you remove it then you can drop it in while it's in place with the microswitches. When originally assembling it, the plate with the microswitches was probably not attached to the back housing... at least that was how I assembled mine with the DIY parts from Magic Trashman.

Ohhh shit, I've done this sort of thing before, I took a DVD Player apart and couldn't remember which screws and clips went where, bloody nightmare. Glad you got it back together mate.

I'm thinking about making a restrictor that keeps the stick from moving much beyond the engagement point so you and push it to the extremes and still move quickly.

It's a neat mod if you actually own an original Neo Geo, but I wish there was a way to do this mod an still be able to actually use the controller with the Neo Geo Mini since that's all I have.

Agreed with the biggest problem with the new NeoGeo Mini pads and the joysticks on the machine, is they have WAY too much travel. From left to right and up to down, no good for quick twitchy games. It's great he's added the microswitches so it can work with original NeoGeos, but I wonder if there's a way to tighten up the movement travel.

That looks bad-ass. I'm already imagining a Y Adapter cable - properly wired - for use with the Atari 5200.

I reckon you could 3d print a restrictor ring to go under the bell of that thumbstick to reduce the travel after the click, maybe something to conform to the whole thumbstick well, It might take some trial and error to get just the correct thickness but i think it could be done. Just an idea.

I remember watching this back when doing the pads for my Neo Geo CD. How's it performed since making this video? It is always handy to have new pads like this either for the Neo Geo systems or any superguns for testing.

are the buttons in the original order too? no idea why they were swapped in the mini :S

Might be a bit late to the party, but did you ever try putting a restrictor under the stick to prevent the throw going to far?

I doubt that would last an hour with me. My hands seem convinced that the harder you push a joystick the faster it will go.

The moment I saw stuff about the non microswitched pads that came with the mini, I thought, someone's going to mod that. :) Not a great leap of imagination from my part. :|
