Snode AD80 Adjustable Dumbbells Review with Drop Tests

In this video, I review the Snode AD80 Adjustable Dumbbells. I also perform a number of drop tests, weigh for accuracy, and compare the Snode Adjustable Dumbbells to other adjustable dumbbells on the market.
The Snode AD80 Adjustable Dumbbells are one of the only “drop-proof” adjustable dumbbells on the market. The AD80s range from 10 to 80 pounds in 10 pound increments. Additionally, 2 cast iron trays are included and (8) 1.25 pound magnets. With the addition of the magnets, each adjustable dumbbell weighs 85 pounds a piece. All 8 magnets can be placed on one dumbbell making a 90 pound dumbbell.

Great review on these! You did a very fair drop test and I agree with you about the magnets. With so many options for this style of adjustable dumbbell, it's nice to see one that's reasonably durable.

You provide excellent reviews that I actually trust, you're not just a salesman like the other big Garage Gym guy. I like how the inside of those dumbbells taper out to give your wrist more clearance, but I think they could improve the magnets by increasing the diameter and making them thinner. If FEDEX wants to drop a pair off in my driveway I won't complain though!

I really appreciate your comment. I agree, the tapering is a nice feature I didn’t touch on. Definitely room for improvement on the magnets…mainly for pressing movements; other than that, the included magnets are pretty decent. lol! Maybe you’ll get lucky with FedEx.

I already have the powerblock exp. But these and the pepin have always intrigued me. I would probably use the platemates magnetic weights instead of the ones they sent. I’ll probably pick up platemates for my powerblocks. Excellent review

I’ve had Nüobells for two years without issue, but I’ve definitely seen more people complain about their dumbbells breaking. I upgraded to the Pepin Fast Series to go over 80 lb and I couldn’t be happier!

Don’t be hard on the driver, HGHR. He just wanted to assist in drop testing 😉 not super crazy about those magnets, but the metal construction is pretty nice. In depth review as always.

lol! Mission accomplished. The magnets are a somewhat new addition to the package. I’m glad they’re included and they are very nice, but they definitely work better for exercises where the dumbbell doesn’t need to be kicked into place. Thanks so much, BGB!

My nuobells broke so I’m definitely considering these, the only downside is the increment jump maybe they make a magnet that fits into that inside gap the first plate has

@@HomeGymHacksandReviews it wasn’t even the 2ft drop that happened twice that broke them, it was the mechanism of turning the handle too many times, I gotta give it to powerblock for decade lasting dumbbells maybe i should buy those

@@reachon7396 Interesting. Ironmasters are another ADB to consider. I have an older review for those. They are tough and there are no adjustment mechanisms.

I keep seeing nuo bells keep breaking, whether the adjustment mechanism mis aligns or the plastic on the weights that lock together chipped or completely broke

Pretty cool. I ruined an older set of power blocks recently dropping them from about 8-10 inches (I knew better) so these are pretty intriguing to see them shrug off that abuse.

I tried the Bowflex dumbbells and barbell/curl bar at Dick's Sporting Goods a few days ago. I hadn't used the dbs in years. I've seen many positive reviews of them so I thought maybe they were upgraded since I tried them when they first came out. Apparently not. They wouldn't have survived the shipping ordeal that these did. Good review.

lol! I’ve never been a fan of that Bowflex design. Thanks for sharing that info. I do think the comment section helps people with their purchases as much as the reviews do. I should have gotten a better picture of the inside of the damaged box. The plates were out of their cutouts and completely sliding out of the box.

I'm currently visiting family so I ordered bands, a suspension trainer and Lebert parellettes ahead of my visit. A good guest brings his workout with him, but I wasn't sure what TSA allows on the plane.

Good video. I really like how compact the new pepin dumbbells are, but I hate the side bars. Snode also are not very compact. I feel like between all these companies we are very close to getting the perfect adjustable dumbbell, but it just isn't there quite yet.

Thanks so much! If I could only have one adjustable db, I would choose the Ironmasters. If only between those two: it depends, the Snodes aren’t quite heavy enough for me and I need to drop dumbbells after pressing but the Trulap’s don’t allow me to do that. So, for you, are the Snodes heavy enough? Do you need to drop your dumbbells? Hopefully that helps.

Really well done review. I ended up with the Ironmaster adjustable dumbells, they are built like a tank. By the way, what Nylon weightlifting belt do you recomend? I would like to purchase one and I would like to start with the Nylon version in order to get use to it before going into a clasp one. Thanks alot!

Thanks so much! You can’t go wrong with the Ironmasters; I love mine. I don’t own a lifting belt. With my back, I don’t barbell squat, barbell row, deadlift, so there’s really no need for me to have one. Wish I could be of better help for you…hopefully someone else will see your comment and recommend 1 or 2 for you.

Beltfed is a Great small American company that customizes the belts if you want and is where I got my belt but I don't know if they have Nylon belts. I think they only deal in leather. Probably Pioneer would be the best place to get a really good Nylon belt or SBD.

Alright, Your choice For you----- Snodes or Trulaps? BTW, Thorough Review You are so right about big, fat grips, I hate them too. People think they're improving their grip strength using thick grips and they might be about .0001% If a person sent wants to improve their grip or forearm strength then just do grip and forearm exercises. I never ever want to use a grip larger than 30 mm. I use millimeters for measurements in grip size because that's how all barbells are measured, that I've seen. I don't know grip measurements in inches but I do see the grips for the Snodes look pretty big. You were selling me on the Snodes until you said they only have 10 lb. increments, then you lost me. For me the trulaps everytime, frankly I can't believe they would make a home gym adjustable dumbbell with only 10 lb. increments. That mistake will cost them millions of dollars. Great Job Take Care

Thanks so much, Bobby! That’s a tough question because I like features on both. I think the Trulap is the best looking adjustable dumbbell there is. However, with my recent shoulder injury, I have to dump the dumbbells on the floor after a heavy set of heavy flat press taken to or close to failure (my recent shoulder injury came from kicking myself back to a standing position when I was using the Ironmasters in my old Ironmaster Spare Bedroom Gym). For that reason, of the two, I have to go with Snode because of durability and having the option to drop. Snode’s magnets are decent for bridging the gap between settings. PlateMates could make the Snodes even better.

Powerblocks are the best. Have one 10 yrs now. Connected plates are better than have a handle sitting into plates.

@@brettlagrange3944 the change instantly is only critical when doing drop sets. It's still slower than having a pair of dumbbells at your feet ready to go. And it takes just a few seconds more. The reason i don't like plates.... I had the Bowflex select tech before and eventually the plates stopped holding.... Had them drop on me while doing chest press. I know for a fact that nothing can come loose and fall on me with the powerblocks

How much play or gap between the plates when hung or held vertically? Saw review with a video clip where they lifted it up and they gapped pretty decently when lifted with some loose tolerances.

I don’t think it’s too noticeable. My dad is borrowing these so I can’t give an exact measurement, but at some point in the video, I show what the separation looks like when being set to 80 pounds and lifted and when I turn to the side for shrugs you will be able to see some sagging.

How noticeable or distracting is the plates sagging on the dumbbell? I've heard fully loaded it sags a bit. Just curious. Otherwise I really like these, seem sturdy. Might sell my powerblocks for this

I don’t think it’s noticeable. I can’t remember where in the video, but I show what it looks like and address the topic. I also press and shrug with the dumbbells fully loaded and you will be able to see some sag, but I don’t “feel” it when in use.

I haven’t tried the Nuobells, but not being drop-proof makes them less desirable for me. Of the others, I have features on each that I like, but I’m taking a drop-proof dumbbell over ones that can’t be dropped.

I tried that and it isn’t something I would do…if I remember correctly, the magnet doesn’t stick that well due to reduced surface area.

Snode or Trulap?

Different features for each: Look and number of adjustments goes to Trulap. Tray and durability go to Snode. As for the Trulap’s motorcycle-style handle adjustment vs the Snode’s dial, they are both user friendly - maybe a bit easier to adjust the Trulap’s.
