In true Filmation fashion, the Evil Queen is pretty much a He-Man or She-Ra villain who despite having near omnipotent magical powers can’t defeat her adversaries out of the convenience of cartoon incompetence.
@yudithcaron80535 ай бұрын
Also, she doesn't know the difference between a mouse and a rat. Filmation neither, apparently.

6:13 I will admit, the notion of Snow White repressing her trauma for the sake of her daughter's emotional health would have been a interesting concept for a fairytale sequel than what we actually got here. On a side note. The Queen transformed herself into a GIANT old lady and used a poison flower instead of just squishing the kid?!

That and the fact that she's able to shoot lightning from her fingertips and summon demons at will. Makes you wonder why she ever had trouble killing the original Snow White. This is the same problem Filmation had with their other Snow White "sequel" where the evil queen had a brother who could turn into a freakin' dragon! 🙄

I kinda like the idea of the face in the mirror just being herself and the problem was her own insecurities, but the execution of it sucks, if that even is what they mean by the queen's ending.

It took me a hot second to realize this was a review for an animated special, because there's actually a live-action made-for-TV film called A Snow White Christmas from 2018 that uses the Snow White fairytale in surprisingly quite clever ways in order re-tell it as a modern-day Christmas story. Wow, you're the first person I've heard mention Happily Ever After. I grew up watching that movie. I hope it gets its own coverage, for there are a couple of decent moments, primarily involving the villain voiced by Malcolm McDowell, and the animation is surprisingly decent for Filmation standards.
@WillieManga5 ай бұрын
The movie actually had a pretty damn good cast of actors in it overall. Phyllis Diller, Dom DeLuise, Ed Asner, Irene Cara, and Frank Weller, as its most notable examples alongside Malcolm McDowell. Funny thing about Frank, though, is that Megatron sounded more like Starscream in the movie. We also got Animat AKA ElectricDragon505 critiquing the story, characters and animation of it while Musical Hell mocked it as... well, a musical. But I learned from the former that the VHS of it placed the advertisement for the merch and sponsored bananas right after the last scene of the movie. You know, I had a VHS for the 101 Dalmatians live action movie and couldn't help but notice them advertise that very movie on that VHS. Even as a 5 year old autistic kid, I noticed that! Imagine how confused I would be if I saw them advertising products before the credits rolled.

One of their first major projects was a TOTALLY NOT sequel to that famous 30's Wizard of Oz movie that was completely their own creation and sequel to the book if the lawyers came about. And it took them the better part of a decade to even finish it. Filmation tasks me. They are capable of some actual good stuff like Groovey Goolies, He-Man, their Mighty Mouse, and especially Bravestarr. Then of course, there's stuff like this. And now that I see it, I wouldn't be surprised if Snow White Jr. was just their Sabrina the Teenage Witch cartoon model slightly altered and reused. Because we ALL know how they love to recycle things. And that "I AM you" would have worked better in a stronger Snow White script if they foreshadowed anything about it. Honestly, I think Disney did have a case with "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night" because that movie had an insect-like companion named after an interjection used to express surprise, Gee Willikers... you know, like Jiminy Cricket? And no, that name isn't from the book, as the cricket had no name, that was purely Disney's invention, so, yeah, I think Filmation just got lucky with the whole "Disney doesn't own the original story" loophole. But when they made "Happily Ever After" and realized that they couldn't use the 7 Dwarfs as, again, they had no names in the original story and the Disney ones are the ones everyone recognizes, so it's not like they could use them and thus had to create the Dwarfelles and say the Dwarfs were having a vacation, not even trying to give them different names, Disney had a better case there because this time Filmation's more clumsy attempts to hide the movie's status as an unnofficial sequel didn't help them. Also, this is probably just a stretch, but the Dwarf in this movie is called Grunyon... which sounds like Gruñon, which is Grumpy's Spanish name... yeah.

This film really missed an opportunity to have Christmas actually matter in the plot here. If the intention was to have a varied environment with the giants living in a place where it didn’t get cold enough to snow, why couldn’t Snow White Junior try to have them celebrate Christmas how she was used to, but it didn’t work in a warm climate. Could have been an interesting parallel to the Southern hemisphere celebrating Christmas in summer. Wouldn’t have saved this film, but it would have been something to use.

I hope Phelous will review their Pinocchio movie. It feels like both a sequel and a retelling of the original tale seeing it's set one year after the events of Coloddi's tale but Pinocchio goes through similar stuff nonetheless and briefly returns to being a puppet for an evil puppeteer (closer to Disney's Stromboli than the original Mangiafuocco). Also, James Earl Jones voices the titular Emperor of the Night and it's obviously awesome.

I love these films were meant to be pseudo-sequels to their Disney equivalents when they're so visually different, tonally different and of a much lower quality even compared to the standards of actual Disney sequels. Though I suppose Phelan's stint of watching these shitty animated adaptions riding of more successful animated adaptations shows it works as long as people don't look too hard at the box cover.

I see that the fashion sense in Snow White kingdom is somehow similar to Eternia and Etheria

For some reason I lost it at the Seven Friendly Giants' really repetitive song, I guess I really needed that laugh

In terms of the knockoff animation studios we've seen on this channel, Filmation's quality seems among the highest. Variety of character designs that still feel like they belong (for the most part, 4 and 5 finger hands all over), good camera angles and the animation itself is fairly smooth. Judging by the clips alone from the others they only got better on the animation front too. That stuff looks quite good.

"Oh come on! I was cryo frozen for, like, 20 years! I should be fairer than the older Snow White at least!"

I can exactly imagine how the Dwarfs and Giants family works, and them being cousins makes perfect sense to me. They've probably got some other cousins on either side who are trolls and elves; you know, Scandinavian folklore stuff. A family blessed to always have seven children too, it seems.

Maybe it’s California humor having a character with a name that sounds like “grunion.” The fish regularly beach themselves in order to breed and when they do this they’re easily caught for food. In California you need a fishing license if you’re an adult but by law you must catch grunion only by hand. The season is restricted and the fish seem in no danger of overfishing given the restrictions on when and how it’s legal to catch them.

15:01 I laughed at this for an inordinately long time. I don't even know why.

Oh god. I've seen this. The "Seven Friendly Giants" song unlocked some ancient core memory.

I love your goofy holiday reviews. I don't know what it is exactly, but they always feel even more fun than the usual fun and silly reviews. Also I'm surprised Filmation did their own knock off movies. With how iconic they were back in the day it feels weird finding out they did this, but it's honestly still a lot of fun.

Discovered this movie via pure accident a few years ago and that "OOOH SHE'S SLEEPING" song has been stuck in my head ever since. Thanks for putting this curse on the general public Phelous

coincidentally, i acquired a book recently about "grunion hunting"--apparently it's something of a California-specific version of the snipe hunt; i wouldn't be surprised if that's where Filmation got the idea to name their character that

Given that Snow White's daughter's also named Snow White that would make it confusing and awkward for the King having his daughter and wife sharing the name

Well it's a mirror, so it's her reflection. Maybe it never told her she was the prettiest because she never believed it herself, so was telling herself she was ugly this whole time? Maybe that's a bit much for Filmation though. xD

I think I recall reading a Disney book with a story where Snow White meets three giants and has the dwarves meet them and it's a lesson about finding what we all have in common or something.

I totally believe the Queen would survive; falling from a cliff, being crushed by a giant boulder AND freezing. She has magic powers but i'm not sure controlling fire was one of them 🤨Geez this old lady is stronger than i imagine!
