I bought this snow blower for $50
It's a 1970's Ariens model unknown 24" wide 5HP Tecumseh.
I spent $20 fixing it and $20 for the parts to MOD it into a dolly.
I am going to have to mod it again so it is not using the trailers small wheel.

You have tons of power but no traction. You need a much stiffer bracket and you need to put more weight on the blower by cranking the trailer dolly up a lot more and possibly ditch or raise the rear castor. With the rear castor up higher you should be able to simply pull up to the trailer and push the handle down to get the ball into the hitch, snap the hitch shut and push down on the handle as you move to put all of the tonge weight on to the wheels and it will have much more traction. The design is good, just needs some teaking is all.

I agree with you and I think I will give it another run next spring. One problem is the handlebars are not strong enough to hold much weight. If the wheels are the fulcrum, than the handlebars are on the short side of the lever. The key is to get the trailer wheel adjusted just right. A better wheel that wont sink in the dirt would help.

Cheap and easy! Seems to work half way decent. I built a manual one out of a 2 wheel dolly. It works good, but now I'm motorizing it!

i think you had the right idea with the old snow blower but it looks like the tongue weight needs to be farther up on the drive wheels of the blower for more or better traction. you already added the caster wheel to the blower to keep it from tipping over so you wouldnt need to keep the trailer jack down. just a thought. when i get some time ill be trying to do something like this with an old blower too

Well if I don't sell it I think I may try to mod the design to get more weight on the drive wheels. We will see in the spring when the camper comes home again.

I see 2 problems first the wheel should be under the hitch so all the weight press down on the wheel second blowers usually have a rubber drive on it that is used to power it forward and backward and different speeds. which could slip and wear out fast. what might work out for you is if you extend the bottom out more and put another axel and 2 wheels right under the hitch or even past it some. so all the weight of the trailer is on the wheels, and then raise the trailer support wheel so it doesn't hang up when moving it. and hope the friction drive wheel will not wear out on you.

Thanks for the advise. I might work on this again next spring. Right now the camper is going into storage for the winter. Thanks for watching.

I am thinking of the same thing. What to you think if you put a larger caster wheel directly under the hitch ball to support the weight?

Sorry for the late reply. The two problems I had were the throttle was only stuck on a bit more than idol so I did not have 1/2 the power this could have given me. The other problem is traction on grass. The trailers front jack wheel I was using just sank into the dirt. Some how I need to transfer some of the trailer weight to the drive wheels of the blower. If you are moving stuff around a parking lot this would work great. Thanks for watching.

Put the wheel in the front. Change the belt drive to a chain.

In the end I was unable to get the camper to fit through the fence to get it in my backyard. Making the dolly a moot point. I also sold the camper last year. Thanks for watching. I plan on making a camper conversion for a utility trailer this coming summer.

Well if you raise the ball height you can add traction by pushing down on the handle bars. Not the perfect solution, but should work good for a short single axle trailer like that

I am so glad I did not sell it last fall. I have used it as a snow blower all winter and it's great. Look for it this summer for a redesign and try 2. Thanks for watching.

Take off the small castor wheel and lift up the jockey wheel to add more nose weight. Thats why the main wheels are spinning. Add a brake system. Does it have a reverse gear? also try adjusting the handles pivot point more to the centre of the wheels, adds weight to wheels.

I don't think it needs that small caster , if it does, maybe on the other side. Been thinking of building something like this. Still thinking it would work .

Sorry for the late reply. The caster is only there to stop the handle bars from going to the ground when you are not holding them. It did not get in the way. The two problems I had were the throttle was only stuck on a bit more than idol so I did not have 1/2 the power this could have given me. The other problem is traction on grass. i made something similar to that. have to move my ball in closer too, the wheels on the blower keep spinning, not enough weight over them...

The problem is the handlebars are too weak for me to use them as levers. I think it would just bend the handlebars. I still have the snow blower and I'm still using it as a snowblower. However the camper just will not fit through the fence into my backyard so the point is kind of moot.

@JamitinThereRepair
@JamitinThereRepair 13 күн бұрын
My friend only helped me do some welding. You can find all the parts at your fleet farm. The problem you have to recognize is the handlebars are too weak to use as a lever to pick up the trailer. On flat ground. It probably works really well. That was not my experience. Good luck!

I like it! Thought of doing that as well but my trailer is 33' so the battery/winch powered tug seems like a better choice. Not a fail, just a project in development. Like other's said, a heavy swivel caster under the blower's trailer ball makes the most sense. Here's an idea... If you put a small power sports battery on top of your blower's receiver hitch, then ran a (fused at the battery) positive wire through a handlebar mounted momentary switch to the trailer's electric brake pin on the trailer connector, you could activate the trailer brakes (crudely.... 100% on) to stop a runaway. Of course you'd have to connect the negative pole of the battery to the trailer connector's negative pin. You could take the power off the trailer battery (if installed) in a similar way but you'd just run a fused positive wire through a switch on your handlebar, and back to the trailer brake pin on the trailer's connector. Keep up the good work!

That did not cause any problem. The wheel on the camper is the problem. It's needed as without it all the weight would be on the old tube handle bars. Thanks for watching

If I take the jockey wheel out the weight of the trailer would transfer to the handlebars. The wheels would be the pivot point and the handlebars are not strong enough to carry the load. Check out the snapper fail video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ac1nab2Gnb2Vhnk.html and see why I am not going to move forward with this plan. It may be a good plan if you wanted to move trailers around a parking lot. Thanks for watching.
