Probably the scariest moment of my life when I fell into a hole while snowboarding in Nozawa Onsen, Japan. Lucky for me my mates saw me fall and heard me calling out and came back to rescue me.

@@doriandundee9906 Large amounts of snow on a small stream or river. The water isn't frozen and gradually melts and carries away the snow until you end up with a hollow cavity beneath an otherwise inconspicious snow layer. Other way is for treebranches to form a roof which carry the snow but not the fellow skiing over it.

Could have been a tree hole, but this being Japan where everything is on a big or little volcano, could have been a small steam vent. It's not good to be out without a shovel, but you can use your board to dig steps out of the snow or to pull enough snow down to stand on and get out. That would be your best move in a situation like that with no shovel. Good thing that your mates were there.
