Probably the scariest moment of my life when I fell into a hole while snowboarding in Nozawa Onsen, Japan. Lucky for me my mates saw me fall and heard me calling out and came back to rescue me.

@@Top10AI203 That is not a crevasse, that is a snow bridge formed over a river. A crevasse only exists on glacier and this is not it because of the trees all around. Two things to avoid at all cost while riding backcountry are rivers and trees

@@doriandundee9906 Large amounts of snow on a small stream or river. The water isn't frozen and gradually melts and carries away the snow until you end up with a hollow cavity beneath an otherwise inconspicious snow layer. Other way is for treebranches to form a roof which carry the snow but not the fellow skiing over it.

Could have been a tree hole, but this being Japan where everything is on a big or little volcano, could have been a small steam vent. It's not good to be out without a shovel, but you can use your board to dig steps out of the snow or to pull enough snow down to stand on and get out. That would be your best move in a situation like that with no shovel. Good thing that your mates were there.

Dang! I guess falling into a crevasse isn't as rare as I thought it would be. I've seen tons of video's like this in the last few days after watching a tree well rescue. Now my recommended videos are loaded with avalanches, tree wells & crevasse rescues.

Just dig the snow into the hole. The hole fills up, the guy gets lifted up, and the surrounding snow goes down.

Backpack with shovel and probe, and a beeper. Not only for avalanches! Had you been alone, you would have been able to get yourself out with the shovel. Had you been alone without it... you would have frozen to death. Please, do that investment when you go out there. Glad to see you had good buddies with you and got out!

Ben S. Breaking snow out? By taking snow from the edges he could collapse the edge and bury himself. Re did the right thing and didn’t touch the edge until he was being pulled out.

Nah bro don’t be, this is backcountry in the trees where you need to be a lot more careful. If you stick to the groomed trails at the main resort than this is literally never going to happen. That being said I still prefer tree trails and backcountry😂

Not as bad. But I fell 5 feet into a snow covered creek. I was being stupid and didn't see the hazard pole. You fell way further and there was no marking. That's scary. This accident seems completely unavoidable.
