We're back! And it's a good one - a snowy wild winter camp on the sub-arctic Cairngorm plateau, nestled above Glen Lui on Derry Cairngorm. We face it all in this adventure; brutal winds, sub-zero temperatures, beautiful falling snow in the glens and vast, open space all to ourselves.
For this fast and light adventure, Ben used the Hanchor TUFA 38L pack and Megs is using the Hyperlight Mountain Gear Southwest 2400. We took the Hilleberg Allak 2. We packed our Grivel Airtech New Matic Evo crampons and Camp Corsa Nanotech Ice Axes, but didn't need them as we were post-holing and breaking trail through thick powdery snow.
Remember to THINK WINTER if you're heading into the hills this festive season. The days are short and conditions under foot are likely to be slow and difficult. Give yourself time, bail out options and be prepared! Conditions over ambitions.
Join us as we talk lightweight gear, hiking, camping and all things outdoors in a stunning Scottish setting.
Some of the gear we used:
Soto Windmaster Stove: amzn.to/317i7x4
Evernew 1.5ltr Waterbag: amzn.to/3FO3L3Q
Evernew Titanium Cup: amzn.to/31n4z1g
Titanium Lifeventure Long Handled Spoon: amzn.to/3rBld7O
Nitecore NB10000 Battery Pack: amzn.to/3pv1QL9
Petzl Swift Headtorch: amzn.to/3rx8UcR
Petzl E + Lite Headtorch: amzn.to/3dgNVCK
This list is not exhaustive! If you have any questions about the gear we used, drop us a comment, we'd love to chat 🙏🏼 Alternatively, check out one of our 'What's in my Pack?!' videos on the channel.
If you like the look of any of the gear we talked about in the video, you can purchase it for yourself, using the Amazon using the links above. It won’t cost you anymore, but we’ll get a little something back if you use our affiliate links.

Nice to share a video again, we hadn’t had the inclination to film for a while. It’s so nice just being in the hills, especially with focusing on our current Munro round. This was worth sharing though😊. Here hoping it’s a brilliant winter season 🙌🏼 Hope you have a fantastic Christmas, appreciate you watching.

Brilliant guys , a proper winter trip . Quite a rough night which it makes more enjoyable inside the tent but what a stunning morning/ day . The Allak2 was perfect for that trip Ben and Megan . Good see you guys back out… good stuff.. Stevie

Hey Stevie 👋🏼, it was ideal this one! Conditions you’d like mate. We always sleep so well in the tent in winter all tucked up. The Allak did a great job, it’s nice to just have a tent you trust even in the worst weather. Hope you and your family have a brilliant Christmas! Hopefully see you in 2023.

Brilliant guys, good to see you again it’s been a while. Interesting note about the 10mm poles, my Soulo (9mm) pole snapped the other week in heavy winds - I’m replacing with 10mm. Keep em coming, missed you both. Regards Richard.
@OutdoorIntrigue
@OutdoorIntrigue Жыл бұрын
Hey Richard 👋🏼. It’s absolutely mad how much difference the 10mm poles make. I call it a brown label Hilleberg 😂, not quite a black label but much stronger than a red, so mix the two and you get your brown. The lighter guylines have also had no issues since using them. Nice to film and share a vid again and glad you enjoyed it! Have a wonderful Christmas 🎄 Happy trails Ben & Megs

Ooooft. I was freezing just watching this. 🥶 Well done for getting oot in they conditions. That, would've been a low camp for me, or even a wee day trip. Stunning morning 😎 Some amount of snow. Derry Cairngorm looked stunning. Roll on spring when the snow is less deep. 😉

Thanks Richard! 🙏🏼 could’ve done with a bit more consolidation to make the going a little easier under foot, but not complaining when the snows that good, this early 😍 good eye - you did indeed, it’s the Hanchor Tufa, Bens been trying it out on our last couple of trips.

Great video Ben & Megan, brave heading up in those conditions for a wild camp. Your tent certainly looked the biz for those conditions. What a wonderful day you got to summit Derry Cairngorm, and wise choice leaving the packs, no point in carrying extra weight in those conditions, nicely edited, was Megan still using her Rab 600 sleeping bag for this camp.? Atb, Frank.

Thanks for watching Frank! Was such a treat waking up on the Sunday to a snowy Cairngorm wonderland 😍 the Allak 2 is perfect for winter, got a good 8.5 hours sleep that night, snug as bug. Totally agree on the packs, just wish we’d thought of it sooner 😂 I took a marmot one for this trip as the weather was a bit indecisive, said it was getting down to -15C on the summit (it got down to -12C but only late on our second day) but in the end it was only -5C that night so the Rab 600 would’ve been fine 👌🏼

What a great adventure, thanks for sharing. I walked in the Cairngorms for the first time last summer and loved it. I’m going back at Easter but hope there won’t be too much snow as I want to bag a few more Munros. What pegs did you use? I’ve got the Hille y pegs for my Soulo and some titanium spike pegs for harder ground. Thanks again!
@OutdoorIntrigue
@OutdoorIntrigue Жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, 👋🏼 glad you liked the video! The Cairngorms are brilliant aren’t they! We live on the west coast in the mountains but I could happily live in the Cairngorms, it’s just so vast. Not much snow about at the minute but winter isn’t over in the mountains yet. You’ll likely still get some snow at Munro height in the Cairngorms in Easter, it can range from a lot, to not much depending on the year and conditions. I used 4 MSR cyclone pegs, 6 MSR snow pegs that I have adapted to create my own snow system and the two ice axes I used as pegs too. Happy trails!!

Definitely really pleased to see you guys back on film again with this super winter camp. What a great start to the winter this year let's hope it keeps on going. Could you possibly let me know where did you pick up the 10mm poles (for Atko), thanks. ATB Merry Christmas

Thanks Stuart, appreciate you watching and glad you enjoyed it ☺️🙏🏼 feels like such a treat getting so much snow this early in the season, fingers crossed it lasts! I think Ben picked up the 10mm poles for the Allak and Akto from basecamp gear. Ultralight Outdoor Gear have a few 10mm poles in stock currently, you’d just need to check the length of the 9mm ones as it doesn’t always have the red label models in the description of the 10mm ones. Pretty sure it’s 293cm x 10mm for the Akto ( ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/293cm-x-10mm-spare-pole/ ) Have a lovely Christmas! 🎄🥳

@@OutdoorIntrigue Thanks for that info’ OUG do have the 10mm poles on their site. Will give them a call after the festive season is done. I am up in Aboyne just now and apparently good snow fell up in Glenshee last night and forecasting more over Christmas & Boxing days. Will it happen? Will it last? As you say 🤞🤞Wishing you and Ben a merry Christmas and a very happy, healthy New Year.
