As these mats have been getting some great feedback from our customers, we thought it was time to shine the spotlight on them.
In this video, Ben gives us a rundown on the specs and features of this mat. He also shows us how to inflate, add extra firmness, deflate, roll it up and pack it back inside its bag.

I've been really impressed with mine - after offering the megamat to the better half :). I particularly like the way it inflates fully and fast and I don't feel the need to adjust the amount of air once inflated. It's a little heavier and a little smaller than my megamat but every bit as comfy for a whole lot less $$$. It's as comfortable a mattress as I've ever slept on. And a bargain. Thanks Snowys. Can I talk you into stocking some good canvas Bell tents?

I'm glad you're sleeping comfortably on your Zempire Monstamat, quedecree, thanks for your feedback. As for Bell Tents, it's not something we get requests for, and I can only imagine that they will be large and incredibly expensive to post. Never say never, but they are not on our radar at the moment sorry. ~ Ben

I tell a lie sorry, quedecree, we've just uploaded a bell tent to our website, but it is special order only at this stage. We don't know a lot about it as yet, and the manufacturer is a little glossy on exactly what it is made of but given it only weighs in at around 11 kg I imagine it would be made wholly of synthetic, most likely polyester. Hopefully we can get more information on it soon. Check it out here - www.snowys.com.au/bellbird-glamping-tent ~ Ben

Cheers, Ben. Definitely the right style. The canvas ones are around 30kg for the same size (and nearly a grand more expensive). I think I'd end up putting a stove jack and stove in one - which probably rules out the lighter poly versions. Nice to see one in the catalogue though (insert thumbs up emoticon here).

Yeah, sounds like a canvas version would be a better option for your purpose, quedecree. A stove inside a synthetic tent is never a good idea! ~ Ben

Hi guys, when you're talking about the more expensive mats, which ones are you talking about out of interest? What would you class as the best and most comfortable for longer touring style travel? Thanks.

The Exped Megamat would be the may we refer to as being the top of the range here, Lowelawns. They are much the same in design and comfort, but have long been renowned as the best quality mat in this range. ~ Ben

Hi. I have one of these for about 3 years and I absolutely love it. I have to give it a few blows to fully inflate it but I have been always wondering if this will create some mold inside over time. You have mentioned this won't happen with this mat; why is not the case with this mat?, how accurate is this statement? If I want to buy a pump that would work for this valve which one would you recommend? Many thanks
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Most mats are treated to avoid this occurring, however, if you don't make an effort to keep it dry then there is always a chance of mould buildup in any mat. A few breaths isn't much though, so I'd recommend making sure you leave the valves open with the mat unrolled for a day or so before storing to allow moisture to escape. If you did want to invest in a pump, then any will do the trick really, it doesn't have to be a tight fir on the valve in order to add extra pressure to the mat, this is an affordable option from Zempire -www.snowys.com.au/super-2-way-pump. ~ Ben

How well do the singles combine into a double like the Exped Megamats do?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
They have nice square sides that butt together nicely, Anton, in much the same way that the Exped mats do. Zempire don't have a coupler kit for this but you could use the Exped Universal Mat Coupler Kit or even some homemade straps to keep them from sliding apart though. ~ Ben

Would it be okay to put a mattress topper on this? I have back issues and want something really comfortable. I'm looking at bedding options for in a tent and possible use in an SUV .
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I can't see why you couldn't add a mattress topper on this, Noeline. It is thinner than a regular mattress so any straps on the topper that are designed to hold it in place on a thicker mattress may be a little loos on this one, but I'm sure there would be an easy work-around for this. ~ Ben

Thanks very much for your reply. Just got to think about what size. I want it for in a tent but on the odd occasion sleep in an SUV. I'd need a single for SUV but I like room to sleep so prefer a double.

I have a couple of older Katmandu self inflating mats. The instructions say to store them inflated, out flat. I kept them rolled up to save space but they developed holes near the valve and repair kits are pretty useless. Do the instructions say it's okay to store the Monstamat folded up or better stored laying out flat?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Hi @NopRob4Rob, firstly can I say that the holes near the valve are very unlikely to have been caused by storing the mat rolled up, but not having seen the mats I can't be 100% sure of this. As for storing the mats, it is best for all self inflated mats to be stored wih the valve open, uncompressed and flat for long periods. The reason for this is to ensure that moisture inside can escape, and it also helps the foam inside maintain a memory in an expanded state. In reality though, this isn't overly convenient. So you can store them rolled/compressed up, preferably as loosely as possible, but you should always make sure it has been allowed to air out with the valve open for a few days after use. Also be aware that the foam will develop a memory in a compressed state and will take longer to inflate at the campsite. ~ Ben

And the valve.. how sturdy is it? If it breaks off the mattress would be useless. What is the warranty on it?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
The Monstamat has a 2 year warranty, Noeline, and we have a lot of faith in the brand. The valve can be replaced as it is actually removable, so breakage isn't something to be concerned about. If there is an issue when the mat is new it is most likely to be where the valve is welded to the mat fabric, but this isn't something we see often, and is is covered under warranty. ~ Ben

Does anyone have experience using this in a swag? Thinking about the double, but I would like to be able to roll it up in my swag as opposed to taking it out every time and rolling them separately - a particular hassle in the rain but I’m also just a bit lazy.

I roll up a double self-inflating mat in a swag and it works fine. It requires a little more effort that rolling the mat separately but it does allow you to roll the swag up in a more compact manner that a regular foam mat. ~ Ben

How’s this one compare to the expad megamat?
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
They are on par in terms of comfort, iamatallmidget, but the Zempire comes in at a lesser cost. The Exped has more history in the field whereas the Zempire mat is newer and is yet to be tested for the long run. I hope that helps a little. ~ Ben

Hate the valve. Very hard to position properly to get a seal.
@SnowysOutdoors
@SnowysOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
The valve doesn't need to get a really good seal, Anthony, it is more so to slow the rate at which air gets in or out of the mat. The cap over the top is what creates the airtight seal. ~ Ben

I've got the monstmat king single...my valve is a screw on version (newer version perhaps?)...ive.had it for about 1.5 to 2yrs....used it maybe 10-12 times I think....I have 2 BTW...in my experience, they aren't full self inflatable, probably to 80% ...you need to manually blow....ours have also become less self inflatable over time...I would estimate its now down to 50%, and it becomes an effort to get it fully inflated (or thereabouts)....one of the mats is also leaking, I suspect via the valve somehow....can't see how, can't see why.....by the time morning comes around your basically sleeping with no cushioning......I paid $200 each for our mats....I couldn't fault them in the first 12 months, but given all of the above, they're not that great for the price.

This type of may will generally only self inflate to around the 80% mark, Andy, and then require some extra air to make them firm. As for the Monstamat, we sell loads of these with a lot of positive feedback. It's not unreasonable to think an inflatable product like this can get a puncture too, often the small, slow leaking punctures like you describe are the most annoying and hard to find. You can identify where the leak is by inflating it firmly and spraying with soapy water, you'll see bubbles forming where the leak is and you can repair this with a dab of sealant. ~ Ben

It should be fine on a tent floor, Raphael, it's what is under the tent that can cause problems. Making sure you clear any sticks and rocks away before you pitch your tent is the best way to make sure you don't get any punctures in your mat. ~ Ben

Would definitely recommend staying away from Zempire at least that's my opinion. Bought the double 11 months ago. Used it 4-5 times and the seal around the valve ripped UNDER the fabric. Bought through an online eBay store that sadly doesn't exist anymore but I have the eBay receipt saying it was new and a photo of it wrapped in its plastic with the original labels on it. Contacted Zempire to fix the fault, not even replace the mattress I just wanted it fixed. Zempire will not honor its warranty because supposedly they believe the mat is second-hand (pretty much calling me a liar) and telling me it was even when I have the photo of it still packed in plastic with originals labels on. IMO, Spend your hard earned $ on a company that cares. Ordering an Exped next, and my mate raves about it

I'm sorry this has been your experience, JLH, it is certainly worth sticking with reputable retailers if you want to rely on warranty claims, we for one have a good relationship with Zempire. We like to see ourselves as the middle person where we can liaise directly with manufacturers on behalf of our customers, this can take a lot of the stress out of warranties for the end user. ~ Ben
