Yeah she said this episode was the closest to being based on real events of her life than any other concert cause apparently her friends dad suddenly died around the same time they had gone to a fatboy slim concert, which she said had been one of the best nights if her life, making it feel even more out of the blue.

that makes so much sense. Bryce saying Why did that have to happen, and it's like yeah it seems like narratively irrelevant and a complete tonal deviation, not even bittersweet like the other finales, just bitter. But since the finale is about passing that threshold into adulthood, it adds up now. Even without knowing that tho, as someone who's experienced similar, stuff like that never feels narratively relevant in real life. My friends and I were studying the day before our senior finals, laughing our asses off, high on senioritis and graduation parties, when a teacher came over and pulled our friend aside. she came back to collect her things sobbing uncontrollably, she couldn't say anything. We found out later her dad had died. All I could think about was how impossible it would be to even give enough of a shit to finish your finals after something like that. Then a couple years later I was having the best time of my life at college. I had my first kiss and a couple days afterword my dad died without warning. My college experience was never the same after that. Lots of fans were upset that Claire's first kiss was spoiled by that ending, like it read as a narrative punishment for her queerness. But all I could think about was how REAL it was (maybe cuz it was so similar to me). It really does just leave you asking yourself Why did that have to happen? But that's just HOW that stuff happens.

This hits. My friends and i are in our late 20s and we have been fortunate so far, but in the last few years we started coming face to face to such real events in our lives. One of our dad's first got into a coma and then sadly passed away, another's dad got very sick with dementai, another's got bad bout of diabetes while my mom got cancer. Slowly we just felt more grownup than we have ever done

Claire's dad was actually in the first episode of the show. He came to pick her up after they got in trouble for the nun dying. And Claire's dad dying and her having her first kiss in the same night is often how life happens. Sometimes we have the best and the worst of life happen at the same time.

Fatboy Slim was a super famous DJ and songwriter and musical artist in the 90’s and 2000’s. He wrote the song which was used over the funeral scene. There is a video of Christopher Walken dancing to Fatboy Slim’s ‘Weapon of Choice.’ Columbo was a tv show starring Peter Falk as a homicide detective who would seem to be forgetful and looked disheveled in a wrinkled raincoat, but always outsmarted the murderers. His signature line was: “…just one more thing…”

Iirc, we met Claire's father way before we met her mother. I think it was the very first episode of Season 1. Her father said "Killing nuns now, is it?" And Claire said, "I didn't, Daddy." Which her father responded with "Wait under your mum hears about this." I can still vividly hear that conversation in my head. This show is vaguely based on the showrunner's life while growing up in Derry. And the sudden death of a parents is based on her own experience when her friend's Dad passed away due to aneurysm.

This episode was particularly funny to me because the guy who plays James and the guy who wanted to fight him, they were both in a UK soap together for a few years (Hollyoaks) The older guy's character went to prison for multiple murders (some of which he didn't really do), and 'James's character died in a very sad plottwist. I say it was funnier for that reason, but also probably my least favourite - I actually got spoiled about the ending the day after it aired on TV over hear last year, but I was actually grateful for it, and it made me not go any further with it for months - because my dad was dying of cancer. I finally watched it and finished the series some time after he died. I've read somewhere that the actress who plays Clare was genuinely that emotional, because she'd also lost her dad.

Damn boys I don’t think y’all ever got me feelin older than saying you don’t know Fatboy Slim 😂😩 I was floored when Claire’s dad went, it just came out of nowhere, which is actually why it is so fitting. These things happen and often blind side us. The girls wrapping their wings around Claire, the whole imagery of that scene takes me out every time. This last one’s a good one, bittersweet and leaves you wanting for more ❤

FatBoy Slim is a very well known DJ and musician. Him coming to Derry at that time was a Big Deal. Even after all these episodes you all expect the next episode to continue with themes from the one before. Each episode is like a snapshot of their lives, only loosely connected to the one before. Obviously Claire's Dad being dead does have repercussions for her....but apart from that, it will be a whole new story.

I just realized that when you mentioned how similar the mothers' and daughters' friend groups are, that Rob (the guy from Canada) was actually gay and even though James isn't gay they still call him gay. It gives the scene where the mom's talk about James' "gayness" an interesting second layer, as if they want him to be gay out of nostalgia or so their daughter's friend group is exactly like theirs.
