Ireland are the back-to-back Six Nations Champions. But before they could be crowned, Andy Farrell's army had to overcome a well-prepared and fired up Scottish side who may have just found a way to shut down their attack. So what did Scotland do to the Irish, and how did they overcome them to take the title?

If it really is his last game, O'Mahoney has finished with a 5th Six Nations title. Not bad going. I think Alun Wyn Jones won 5 as well. I don't think anyone has more than that. Maybe Jason Leonard if you count the 5 Nations era as well?

That's a great stat (and achievement fron the guys you mention obviously). I thought maybe Jonny Wilkinson had five 6N titles but turns out it's 'only' four. The late Christophe Dominici's international career spanned five French titles (including the 5N in 98) but he didn't play in one of them. Maybe there's another French player from that era to win five 🤔

Waken up, what do you think is causing the inconsistency? The players or the brick walls the officials introduce? Scotland have been victims to big decisions make wrong in the past five 6 nations, but there have been more in this 6 nations than all of those combined. At least one big decision in each game, and two big decisions in most games. That's ignoring the general brick wall like 17 penalties to 0 in a row against Wales where 9 wrong decisions were made. Wake up

Hi Squidge, thanks a million! 😊 I'm not sure if you answer questions, I know you've already put so much work in, but I'll ask anyway and be happy to hear anyone's reply... Is this Scottish defence the reason the Irish attack looked so inanimate during phase play? They looked to my (less educated) eye like they were jogging rather than running at the gainline. But if Scotland slowed the ball so much that they'd literally to stop and wait then maybe they'd no choice but to run from a standing start- maybe they deserved so much less of my frustration than I felt at the time...

Excellent analysis, as a viewer it is hard to see how much of a role conditioning plays in the game. I struggled to see that conditioning is the weak link in the Scotland game - that one thing stopping them from going from being a good team to being a GOOD team. Not to take anything away from the Scottish lads, I am English and for me the Scots where the team of the tournament, delivering exciting games and really high levels of rugby, I cannot wait for this team to have run through enough drills and enough runs for them to unlock their full potential, I see a team which could be bloodying the noses of the Saffa's and the All Blacks in the near future.

So Squidge, what you’re suggesting here says to me that the way around this type of defence which slows down Ireland ruck speed, is to not take the ball into contact. Pass it instead. Do not run into defenders. Try to achieve some extra supreme fitness and then use that to keep the ball constantly moving through the hands. And then, at the times that the Ireland players inevitably run out of puff, kick it or alternatively take a tackle which commits defenders, thereby turning up a few openings. Either way, Ireland will have possession of the ball or they’ll be putting their opponents back into their own half. And it ain’t possible to score if you don’t have the ball or if you’re constantly catching kicks way back in your own half.

This is a really silly question but what's the logic in kicking it away? Is it not easier to keep possession than it is to win possession back again?
@harryscull
@harryscull Ай бұрын
There are many reasons to kick, but the big one is that territory is more important than possession. Playing Rugby in your own 22 is like playing football in your own penalty box, something will go wrong eventually, you are at high risk of giving away points. With rugby there is the added factor that the ball can only be passed backwards meaning that it can be bloody hard to move the ball from one end of the pitch to the other without putting it on the boot. So essentially it is easier to give possession away and then win it back in the opposition half of the pitch than it is to keep a hold of the ball in your own 22.

Its really easy to quantify where Scotland are at. 1) 2nd place as a minimum in this championship. The Nic Berry special try isnt a try vs France means Scotland were 2nd by rights, by controlling that game and winning it. 2) Against Ireland, they took it to the last possession, and had the right points been on the board, Scotland would have been going in to that game just needing a win. That is how close they are to Ireland. 3) There were, I think 40 net wrong decisions against Scotland through the six nations. Imagine what they might have done with bonus points against Wales and England and what that confidence would have given them againat Italy. So that is where they are, right on Ireland's tail, but then we all knew that coming in to it, and we know it now. I wonder if that influenced all these strange decisons throughout the 6 Nations. 9 big decisions went against Scotland, 9!!! And then the rest.

In retrospect I agree Squidge that Irelands manner of playing wore down Scotland but I’m not convinced it was purposeful. Though i think sometimes the choices we make can have unintended positive outcomes. Which it did, by a hair, for Ireland. I personally find the consistent trend of kicking for the corner and not taking the points to be arrogance from a lack of confidence. Not believing themselves to have the ability to get back down the field teams are gambling with the kick to the corner. Whereas in their pomp the 2015 all blacks took the points early and marched down the field building pressure. But perhaps the analytics say something else so what do i know!
@BobH-eh8wu
@BobH-eh8wu Ай бұрын
If you’re constantly kicking for the corner it means that you’re confident in your ability to win the game by more than 7 points. Ireland kick to the corner with the hope of blowing teams out of the water as early as they can, so that the team will have to catch up on the scoreboard. And when teams are desperate to catch up on the scoreboard they make mistakes and over play and that’s exactly what Ireland want. It forces them to turn down kickable penalties and they have to play with a similar approach to Ireland and teams are rarely able to do that against Ireland. It’s confidence in their ability to execute from set piece, while simultaneously being a way to avoid a close finish that could go either way. Ireland are similar to New Zealand in the sense that they don’t enjoy close games. They prefer to have the freedom to express themselves with a healthy lead on the scoreboard. Whereas South Africa have complete belief in their ability to see out a tight game. So it’s a double edged sword. They have an insane amount of belief in themselves to be able to score tries when the opportunity presents itself. The other side being, they aren’t extremely comfortable in a 3 point game. South Africa aren’t comfortable going all out and backing their set set piece to score tries and blow teams out early so they take the points on offer. Just a different psychology there’s two ways of looking at it.
@BobH-eh8wu
@BobH-eh8wu Ай бұрын
Also, just want to point out, the South African approach to winning games is equally impressive I wasn’t saying one was better than the other. Just an example of two polar opposites who have complete belief in their philosophy. Just as South Africa don’t want a fast frenetic game, Ireland and New Zealand don’t want a slow game.

@justme9818
@justme9818 Ай бұрын
The choke tackle has a very specific aim ie. To create a turnover and win possession. It takes at least 2 defenders. Committing 2 players to each tackle is just doubling up the defensive numbers to pull down a bigger player or slow the ball down as Squidge describes here. There's no specific technique beyond 2 players tackling. A choke tackle aims to keep the attacking player upright as long as possible and stripping the ball from the player, turning the tackle into a maul or winning a penalty from the eventual ruck.

You can’t look at the final score, ask “what if an early score hadn’t happened”, and assume that everything in between would have been the same. Without that try, Ireland would probably have kicked more penalties for 3 points, and still won. They dominated possession, territory, scrums, lineout wins, restart wins, 22m entries, and penalty count.

Anything Scotland did - ‘incredible composed skill’ Anything Ireland did - ‘boring brute force’ All that analysis and this is rife with oversimplification

I feel like I'm going crazy or missing something everyone else is seeing, but surely porters try is held up? No one seems to be talking about it or how much of a blunder it was from the ref? There is no way in hell he saw the ball grounded through that mess of bodies and from every replay I have watched at 0.25 speed I still cant see it being definitively grounded either

I think he just decided for himself that Ireland deserved it whether it was grounded or not. It wasn't grounded, and there was blocking. Let's not pretend officials care about the laws or the whole tournament would look entirely different.

I know you don't like it, but do you not even mention the fact the try was held up? It's clear as day.

I feel the SA bashing is poor form (and pretty low hanging fruit if I'm honest). Winning a world cup and being ranked number one in the world is a great achievement by any team, don't undermine that. Leave it for the series between Ireland and SA to decide the rankings.

Lord Rassie said he rather have a low winning percentage and winning the world cup than having a high winning percentage and being knocked out in the quarters.

Yeah but then it’s truly not a good consistent team. Like what’s the arguement then with six nations? Just don’t bother every other year

If not for a shocking referee ireland would have won by 30. I widnt call it an unbelievable defensive performance from Scotland I'd call it been saved by the ref over and over
