It happened again. After an incredible win over England, Scotland slipped up once again against Wales, making it now twenty years since they last won in Cardiff. So how did Wales sneak it, and how concerned should Scottish fans be?

"So, how did Wales sneak past Scotland?" Me, who knows very little about modern rugby being old and a bit out of touch - they blew it in the last 20 minutes Squidge, arguably one of the best analysts of modern rugby around today - they blew it in the last 20 minutes Does that make me as good as Squidge? LOL Thank you for all the work you put into these, I am learning a lot about how the game is played now - I stopped playing in the early 80's and boy, the game has changed so much since then! - and it's helped me appreciate the game a lot more as I have been falling out of love with rugby in recent years.

Hard to say a team 'blew it' when they were consistently outmuscled by the opposition. It's a bit like saying Wales 'blew it' against SA in the 2019 semi final, or even the game back in the autumn against SA. When you get beat up, you can't expect to win rugby matches. Scotland went back to the old 'fling it around and hope for the best tactic' and, inevitably, it didn't work. That's hardly blowing it. It's called trying to force the play when your pack has lost the physical confrontation. It's going to prove fruitless more often than it works - but it seems like people only remember the times when it works (that's what hope does I suppose). If Scotland drew the game with the final play it would have been a shocker for Wales. The game should have been put to bed with 10 mins to go.

I think that we can only rationalise that Darcy Graham can minimally control his own mass and reduce the mass of the opposing tackler. This is excellent for Scottish rugby, but ultimately a great cause of concern for humanity as a whole as his powers continue to grow.

It's good, but where's the evidence that Scotland are a 'top' team or on the brink of winning a six nations? They're not a competitive side. They win one off matches andthen follow it up by being dominated. Which is to be expected as they're the 5th best team in the tournament and have been for its duration. Without the project players, with the Italy U20s lads coming through, they should be more worried about getting rooted to 6th place than all the chat about winning a six nations. Win a triple crown first and then they'll be taken seriously as something other than the 5th team.

There seems to be a healthy balance of leadership between coach and player(s). I feel like Russell has almost got a little too big for his boots at this point. Definitely think another 10 contesting his spot would be beneficial, he seems to be very inconsistent, with moments of sheer brilliance and then brain-fades in the next game... Biggar had emerged from a ruck after a crash ball 2 phases ago, after already being crocked. Some of his backs were in front of the ball. The Scottish defence was holding. To set up and take the pen would have taken another 30-40 seconds off Russell's YC. I groaned at the time too, but looking back at the footage and thinking about it coolly, it was the right call.

Matt fagerson, their best carrier against england went off at min 30. Hogg had a couple quite shit kicks. And it felt like russell didnt really Russell and unlock the defense at any time during the game, tho this might be due to the double 13s. also couple of dumb penalties Though fair play to wales, really good and smart defense. Good luck further, smash the English :D

Noting wrong with dynamism, everything to do with forwards getting dominated physically by the Welsh. Scotland need to learn how to toughen up and win games the 'ugly' way. Such a difficult watch. The breakdown and biggar’s performance won wales the game. Could argue wales slowed the ball down a lot illegally by just flopping all over the ruck without support bodyweight but they weren’t being pinged so they continued doing it so fair enough. Also you forgot to mention the penalty count in the second half, can’t remember what it was exactly but was heavily skewed against Scotland (7-2 or something like that). Scotland just not clinical enough and didn’t deserve the win.
@Mr___X
@Mr___X 2 жыл бұрын
Scotland were very fortunate to not have at least one team penalty for infringements in their own 22. The penalty count, like the scoreline, flattered them. Wales just turned the screw. Mauled and tackled them out of the game.

A week previously, never-knowingly-legal Ireland conceded no penalties - ZERO - in a first half they spent making rucks look like something out of a Busby Berkeley musical. Then, suddenly, against Scotland it was Wales' turn to magically become invincible ruck bastards. What changed? By which of course I mean, APART FROM 75000 PEOPLE SCREAMING FOR THE OPPOSITION'S BLOOD INSTEAD OF THEIRS what changed? It's a total mystery...

I'm watching this for the first time 14 hours before Scotland kick off against Wales. I couldn't bear it at the time, but I wanted to burst my growing optimism as the match approaches. It worked. I can see Wales coming out fiercely with clever Gatland antidotes to all Scotland's best weapons, slowing everything down, managing the referee, kicking cleverly, staying in the game and giving an expectant crowd the heebie-jeebies. It'll come down to the final 20 minutes again, Wales will bring quality and experience off the bench, and God knows what happens next. It's possible that everything will click for Scotland they'll blow Wales away in the first half, and if they do that inexperience in the starting pack will hurt Wales, but I doubt it. I think it will be watch-through-the-fingers again. I'm ready to be hurt again.

He did England v Italy then removed it, as he either realised himself or others pointed out to him (or both?), that the way the video was so dominated by jokes about media/pundit obsession with Marcus Smith might come across like he was actually having a go at Smith himself. There were also some harsh and personal comments about Steven Varney which Squidge said he regretted, as well as declaring that he didn’t think the analysis itself was up to his usual standards so wanted to have another crack at it. Personally I think he made the right call. Although regular Squidge fans would have understood the attack was on the hype-train not the player, it wasn’t a good look, picking on two young players (I thought the comments on Varney were particularly harsh). I find it incredulous, that you mention great game management by Biggar to play low percentage effective rugby in his kicking decisions, yet fail to mention that during the drop goal Wales were playing with a penalty advantage. Therefore, Wales could have comfortably gone through 3/4 more phases before being called back for the penalty, or could have made a try score play... BEFORE BEING BROUGHT BACK FOR THE PENALTY! Wales on 70 mins at 17 - 17 could have done 1 of 3 things other than the drop goal... 1. Gone 3/4 more phases, before an error and being called back for the penalty = 2 -3 mins and 3 points. 2. Thrown a cross field / up and under try score play, before being brought back, = 2 mins and 3 points 3. Thrown a cross field / up and under try score play, scored it. = 2 mins and 5-7 points. In all 3 of these scenarios Wales would have been better off than just scoring the original drop goal. I'm not saying Biggar was wrong, it seemed panicky to me, but to claim it was 'genius' shows a massive lack of understanding of the situation.

He did mention the penalty was in a tougher position in the video though... Although I had the same reaction watching live: definitely should've pushed for the try.

The 3 point margin flattered Scotland massively and Biggar def made the wrong call with the drop goal. He had a shot at goal from a decant angle but he's taken the decision as captain to take hte pressure off himself instead of trying to win the game there and then. It's a bad call to make and if Scotland had drawn that game with a flukey penalty with the last play of the game, he would rightly get hammered for it. Fair play he's a great player but I have no idea why top test players do not simply take a speculative risk there. Even an unconverted try there would be golden, but Scotland were also on the brink of a yellow card. A captain ought to know that getting a man off the field and coming back for the penalty is better than taking a drop at goal because your knee is sore and you're nervous about a place kick. Totally agree that calling it genius shows a lack of understanding. It's the difference between playing rugby and learning it from behind a screen.

The how is Scotland from week to week are so hit and miss they can be incredible one week and terrible the next they are lacking consistency yes they are doing better then the early 2010s but they still are not consistent enough to challenge for the championship atm

If Hastings was the guy off the bench I’m confident Scotland would have created a proper chance to score. He’s similar enough to Russell to not need to completely tear apart the playbook to fit him in but he also has less of an ego on the field. He’s happy to just slip into the system and play that way. Russell almost begrudgingly plays the system and then does something either magical or stupid. Hastings won’t do the magic Russell does but also won’t get a yellow card in last quarter of the game. He’ll just manage it. That’s how Scotland won in France last year with a 10 just managing the game well and getting involved when he needed to and staying out when he didn’t. Kinghorn isn’t ready for this level as a 10. A better bench for Scotland would be steyn,Hastings and white. You pretty much cover the same amount of positions with those players

It's not about the #10, Connor. The Scotland pack was dominated by the Welsh pack for the last 50 minutes of the game. Not much you can do when that happens, other than nick a win, which Scotland did last week game against England. Wales should have had a more comfortable margin of victory, 3 points was poor from them.

Imo Scotland got the short end of the stick in this game, very evenly balanced teams but the Finn yellow is not a yellow and Wales didn't get a yellow for a shoulder to head hit which I think swings the game. Scotland definitely didn't play well enough to win, too many mistakes but definitely didn't deserve to lose like that.
@chr1srugby

Yes wales should've had a yellow but that was so late in the game it unlikely would've altered the result. Russell was easy yellow, and Hogg should've got one in the first half too. Don't make out Scotland were hard done by.

@@chr1srugby Can't think of the Hogg one you're on about but in no way is that a deliberate knock on by Finn, he is clearly going for the ball and in other games has done the same kind of interception attempt, and Scotland attacking against 14 men with Finn back off the bench I could see them getting a penalty kick in the last few mins
@Mr___X

Scotland could have had 5 yellow cards. Hogg deliberate knock on, Graham dump tackle above the horizontal off the ball on Watkin, team infringement after the warning in lead up to try, Schoemann cynical penalty 5m from his line with team still on a warning, and then the deliberate knock on by Russell. Open your other eye, Cameron!

@@Mr___X I cannot remember the Hogg one tbh, the tackle doesn't go beyond the horizontal so I think it's OK but I can see why, I dont really understand the warning thing tbh because it seems to change game by game I dunno if that's me misunderstanding and Finn doesn't deliberately knock it on his left hand is clearly going up to secure the ball, Scotland should have played better but I think you're extremely exaggerating Scotland fouls
@Mr___X

@@cameronrobertson8343 This is just silly. His legs are beyond the horiztonal. Bad memory is not a defeence. It could have been 5 yellows, that's a fact. You might not like it but it's a fact to say that Scotland could have had 5 yellow cards for the offences they committed. I hope you're a wee lad and just excited about supporting Scotland - otherwise I think you need to sit down with some neutrals who can help you understand the game a bit better.

I don't think the scotland team itself got cocky after the win over England but the media and everyone else bigged them up and made them look stupid after the loss against Wales. It's frustrating though because I don't think the team played badly, Wales just did a really good job of being that annoying 'choke the life out of every play team' by lying on rucks, tackling and flopping off feet slowing things down and just generally getting in the way of every passage of play. There were definitely a lot of infringements that went unnoticed (and fair enough every team does that a fair amount) but it is just irritating that Scotland lose to a Welsh team again that don't deserve to go far in the tournament this year. Would just have been nice to see Scotland get a 3rd place+ finish for a change but now its looking ever harder yet again...
