My wife showed this to me a few years ago when I was going through a particularly bad patch of PTSD, anxiety and depression (yes, I'm a vet). She told me to imagine it was her singing it to me, she just held me and we listened... There were tears, as there were tears watching your tears in your reaction. There are no words to describe how I feel about this rendition.

Wow! Unbelievable. She has the butter smooth timber of Karen Carpenter, the voice control of Celine Dion, the perfect pitch upper register of Mariah Carey and the gospel soul of Whitney Houston all rolled into one. I don't think I have ever heard a single singer have such a perfect singing voice. I loved your reactions and analyses of the song too. What a treat!

She's usually dubbed as Korean "Mariah Carey". I strongly oppose to dubbin her as such! She is just So Hyang, unparelleble to any of female singers including Whitney Houston and Celine Dion :)

SoHyang is difficult to compare with other female singers in the western world. She lives her message. Modest, down to earth and without looking for special fame. No social media presence, no record deals. If you really want to know more about her, you have to watch the numerous videos of her appearances in churches over the years. The real Kim So Hyang.

Kim, So Hyang has always struggled with her health during her lifetime with those many illnesses.. uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special. So Being a Cancer survivor And still gets sick from Time to time. But is an Amazing Artist who gave up a Kpop career to sing for the Lord and for the Love of Music instead of stardom. She learned English as a Child from Disney Movies, which inspired her to Write two of her Books...(both Published and there are more). Also And Publicly thanks Mariah Carey for teaching her everything she Knows about Music ... that is some Testament to The Power of Music Kim So Hyang's vocal type is a Full Lyric Soprano. Her showcased vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (consistent supported range from G♯3 to E6),a total of three octaves, three notes and a semitone. According to So Hyang, the highest note she can sing is an E♭7. This means that she has an overall range of approximately four octaves and one semitone. However, this range hasn't been showcased to its fullest extent yet, as the highest note she has publicly showcased is A6. AS FANS AND ADMIRERS WE PRAY FOR HER CONTINUED IMPROVEMENTS IN HER HEALTH

When I was very small I had a terrible cold I woke up in the morning blind because my eyes were glued shut and I was so afraid. My mother came with a warm washcloth to lay on my eyes and stayed with me until I could see . Her voice feels like this to me ... Warmth and comfort and so much love

Not meaning any disrespect to Mariah or Whitney, but So Hyang is a better singer, but she's also better than everyone else. My first time hearing her, thanks for the video. I've never heard anyone with better pitch, there wasn't anything in there that was even remotely close to a weak note, all those runs were absolutely perfect. She also made all of us guys out here fall in love with her when she spoke the last little bit, and grinned. It was like watching Heifetz play a violin. You know they're human, but you can't believe anyone can be that good.

This performance is timeless. Koreans’ conveyance in singing is really out of this world. Sohyang’s every syllable and note is precise, well modulated and thoughtfully sang. Not to mention the dynamics. The softest breathy sigh and powerful goosebumps inducing high notes in one performance. I’ve watched this performance over the years, and it still leaves me breathless and in awe all the time.❤️

One of the most genuine person, who doesn't sing for Fame,haven't signed with any record labels given the Talent She possesses,approached by so many labels but she just turned them down humbly coz she dont wanna Sing for fame or make money from it just,Christian by religion & committed her life to sing for the people for healing,no social media engagement, only appears on shows like Immortal songs coz she loves those shows,A simple,genuine & down to earth how can we not love Her.... I've heard of So Hyang before, but this is my first time actually seeing and hearing her perform. Uh, wow! Beautiful young lady, confident but friendly stage presence, and that voice . . . WOW! That last note was insane!! I also loooved the purple lighting on the stage. So yeah, she's amazing, she definitely deserves the kind of success that Whitney and Mariah had, and I am looking forward to seeing more So Hyang on the channel! Consider me comforted!

She was actually in her mid 30's when singing this I believe she is now 43 and teaches voice technique at a university in South Korea and does many free benefit concerts etc...throughout South Korea and a few other counties too I believe.

She is magnificent. I cried AGAIN! She works her way up through Mariah and Whitney modes, then there's that moment when she goes full Aretha, and I melt. Finally, when you're a shivering, blubbering mess, she's like, "Hold my beer," [Set floodgates to 'Open'] AFTERBURNER BELT MODE. Whimper. Why is this not on continuous replay on every station everywhere?

The amazing quality that makes Sohyang's performances out of this world is not even her singing, it's her. She's an angel. The way she makes us connected to her performances is just so beautiful and so sincere. People can hit high notes and have technical superiority but Sohyang dedicate her singing with such sincerity and humility that hits you right in the hearts every single time. Wow, what a treat for our ears. Pure, refined sound with incredible control. When many of the so called divas belt it's often uncomfortable to listen to because it lacks musicality and refinement, So Hyang is the new reference standard in my opinion, she's beautiful too !

Yes or no. Hard to tell. Rick Beato does not have absolute hearing but he can nail any note or even chord when hearing it because his frame of reference is so large after years and years of practice and experience that he just knows how each note sound. It's like the guy at the cheese stand that will cut you a piece of cheese that is exactly the weight you asked for. It's not "absolute weighing" but rather years and years of experience (and a lot of talent too)

I remember seeing her at church back in 97. She is a seriously devoted gospel singer and she made bridge over the troubled water into a classic gospel tune. Interesting when I watched the interview of Paul Simon, he got the inspiration of this tune from the gospel as well.

In the case of Sohyang, in an interview with a vocal coach in Turkey, she said that it is possible to play up to 5 octave re# (D#7). In fact, Sohyang played 5 octaves (D7) for a reaction in The King of Mask Singer.

Sohyang sang "misty" from Ella Fitzgerald. She said in various interviews that she's greatly inspired by her. Look for Begin Again live version. You won't be disappointed. I've never heard high soprano sing that song that good, give Ella the justice.

I'm not listening to it live over there. However, Sohyang's voice goes beyond simple emotions to the soul. Sohyang performances are almost beyond human standards.

Hi Elizabeth, I loved this performance. As a young child, I remember hearing this song on the radio in the early 70's, and 50 years later, So Hyang did an amazing job singing one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. She has an incredible voice and her control/technique was excellent. Thank you, Elizabeth, for bringing back some wonderful memories of my childhood!!! 💙

이곡을 커버한 곡들은 많지만 이렇게 고음에서 시작한 경우는 많지 않죠... 속삭이듯 가녀린 고음의 작은 이야기의 느낌.. 그리고 이후에 성량이 튕겨나오며 휘몰아치는 격한 외침의 감성... 소향에 빠져버릴수 밖에 없는것은... 소향이 일반무대가 아닌 큰무대에서 부른곡들 대부분은 감성표현이 다양하게 오간다는것임... 하나의 감성으로 가는것이 아닌 잔잔함과 격함, 애절함, 열정등등의 다양한 감성이 하나의 곡에서 온몸을 강타하기에 듣는 사람의 진을 다 빼버림... ㄷㄷㄷㄷ

Sohyang only records for a small South Korean Gospel label, as far as I know. Though _all_ of the big labels have tried to snap her up--for obvious reasons! Sony Music US is the last we know of back in October 2020, the second largest music label in the world. She told them, politely, "No thank you, I don't want to be that famous." And Sohyang has also said she simply could never keep up with the concert schedule they were demanding, due to her health. Personally, I wish her and David Foster would produce a concert of her covering all of her great performances that are available here on KZfaq. He is nuts about her and could swing this sort of deal and promote a Blu-ray of the concert everywhere in the world, and finally let everyone know who the greatest female singer of our times really is! 👌😉💘😎 PS A number of people have told me that Sohyang's music is available on Apple's digital music sales site, and also on the other big digital music sales sites.

Always eager to hear another reaction of this powerful and heart-touching performance by Sohyang. The unfortunate wait is long but worth it. This performance by Sohyang grabbed my heart at the first bar and never let go. Her voice became an organic part of my heart and sought out feelings long buried under the muttering noises of our daily routines. This performance had so much impact on me and will be part of my treasured memory for life. It's somewhat ticklish to witness the excitement you feel in listening to Sohyang's mastery here. For a vocal aficionado, watching this performance is like a candy lover going on a all-paid visit to the Godiva factory. It's a mind-numbing experience in overindulging in and feasting on the sweetest treat our imagination can conjure up. Love seeing how you process so joyously Sohyang's notes through the vocal pedagogy. Thank you very much for the great video and look forward to seeing you again.

I completely get the first minute of So Hyang performance of BOTW. Just incredibly delicate and she interprets the original song as it should be before all the fireworks commence. A really beautiful singer. Just discovered in past 2 days. We really have to support genuine talent like this. Hope she stays well Listened a few times now .... that delicate sustain in first minute without vibrato is one of most beautiful singing I ever heard

As several reactors have said, Mariah has left the building. There is so much to absorb when listening to So Hyang. Thank you for describing all the details for me. I love how absorbed you get in her music and express it through facial expressions and laughter. I feel the same way after 100's of listenings. Song has a very personal meaning to me. Hint, my wedding song in 1975.
