The answer to all your questions about that trailer are “because redneck”. We all have that tendency to build that thing we need for that one job out of scraps, welderup to last that one time, and then keep using it because it hasn’t broke yet.

Looks like somebody just bought a welder, and tried to build a trailer from scrap laying around the yard, but it's their first time welding and they didn't bother to try a few practice beads first. I'm only a hobby welder, but I tow a landscaping trailer every day, and there's no way that thing is safe as she found it.

In today's economy, $100 for anything usable is a steal!! Hell, just the steel alone is worth way more than that. I like turning gruesome into awesome projects! Are you going to carry super long jumper cables for the winch, or a spare battery?

I had to completely gut the wiring on my trailer when I bought it from my old boss. Splices upon splices, and the brake line ran across one of the axles, so the splices were constantly flexing.

Biggest issue/problem with electrics are usually connection and earthing .. suggestion Do Not Use those blue colour type Scotch locks ,, lots of good connectors with solder inside a shrink tube ensures moisture is kept out.. Try to keep earth leads protected, usually one of the main reasons for defective lights.... using cable ties / clamps to keep everything secure... Good branded LED units help stop bulb changes every bump ... Nothing wrong using Tubing providing its welded correctly and has sufficient braces ,, ,, seems to work for roll cages in most racing vehicles. ..
@BlackEpyon
@BlackEpyon 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaeldenman9223 I recommend welding cable ducts (tubing) slightly bigger than you actually need. Dirt and rust will get into there, and you want to be able to re-do the wiring at a later date, or run more wires, if the need arises.

I would add new trailer axle hubs, because they are easy to service and or replace as needed. Diamond plate the floor and sides too Yes make it structurally sound is the number one goal. Those welds are iffy and it looks like a boat trailer from what I am guessing Most trailers used square tubing rather than round tubing. For a small trailer project there's lots to do on it.

So... I'm in the middle of redoing my $400 trailer that I picked up over 10yrs ago. It wasn't homemade like yours but here's a few things I've done so far and plan to do that might give you ideas: 1. Rewired and lights. 2. Re-boarded it with 3/4" pressure treated wood. 3. New wheel bearings. 4. New safety chain. 5. New tongue wheel. 6. New stainless steel hardware. 7. Convert all the weird metal brad nails holding the wood down to frame to riveted nuts with screws. 8. Drilled mounting holes for removable motorcycle wheel chucks. Set up to hole one centered or two side-by-side. Things to do: 1. Straighten bent crossmember and reinforce. 2. Replace tires. 3. Weld on mounting tabs to crossmembers for bigger bolts to secure wood to the frame (weld on nuts to make installation and removal easier). 4. Re-weld the broken welds in the grated steep portion of the gate ramp. 5. Reinforce gate ramp. 6. Research/design/install better gate ramp securing system (currently using stainless steel quick chain links to secure it to the side panels). 7. Install tie-down points/system for loads, 3 channels (each side and center).

The only thing that worries me on the inspection is the coupler. I had the same one on a home built of mine and they failed it before looking at anything else. The only way I could leave with it and get it home to fix it was on a rollback. I had to R&R with a new one. Something about it not being lockable on the ball was the reason given. The rules may be different in your state so make sure before you drag it down. Other than that, I look forward to following this build. It looks fun.

So for the drums with no brakes, that's a real cheap way to have hubs without buying new proper ones. We deal with a lot of trailers at our dealership so I'm used to dealing with people's 'custom' fixes for things or my personal favourite 3 year old trailers with scotchloks on the harness corroding.

Eh. I mean, Scotchlocks WORK, but they're not exactly meant for vibration, are they? As for the drums, I'm not sure how things work in the states, but where I am in BC, Canada, anything under 1400kg, or half the tare weight of the towing vehicle doesn't need brakes on the trailer. Most small trailers like this won't have them.

definitely a good project thats fairly easy to fix..I'd definitely clean/replace and repack wheel bearings and put some new hub covers with zerk fittimgs so u can add grease when needed plus they allow for u to make sure thers plenty of grease for on the bearungs then just add some metal across floor section whether u use wood or metal for floor then I'd shorten the tongue so its 4ft long and put a new tongue box for a 2" ball and if u wanted to go even the xtra mile u can add trailer brakes to it, trailer brake kits can be added pretty cheap if u get the basic of kits and then u would have one real well built trailer that would last & be xtremely safe and reliable

Similar to what they have for LED lighting for inside a truck bed, just not so bright. It’s just you can see your mounting points at night if your loading.

Axel upgrade if you’re planning on hauling any significant amount of weight. Also paint it Purple of course!! I’m in the same boat you are I am building up a trailer I was given. Btw to plate a homemade trailer in Michigan you have to go to a registered scale like in a salvage yard and get the unladen weight of the trailer and that is what they base the plate fee off of.

Oh girl, what have you done? So much work to build a usable trailer out of this junk. I really admire your optimism. I would have towed this thing directly to the junk yard (mainly due to our german inspection/registration rules). Please check the geometry/alignment of the trailer before any welding, otherwise you get a lot tirewear. The trailer body seems not to be centered on the chassis (at the left side is more space than at the right side). As color sheme, I would recommend purple (your interior shop wall color) for the body (bed, sidewalls, rims) in combination with black for the chassis parts and the fenders.

It's an old car axle. We've done that a few times to make trailers to haul stuff like lawn mowers around. The tape is flex seal. Instead of those wood cross members I would get some square tubing to go side to side and mount it in about four spots. Then you know you'll have a solid base for your wood runners. We used expanded steel for our floor but you don't have to.

I would replace the trailer to tounge with some sort of box tube for strength the round tube tends to bend to easily. Also I've done this to a couple of trailers. I welded on loops that hold the cable on pipe/cable fence lines. Since you live in TX you should be able to find them at your local tractor supply, orchlens, or metal suppliers or any place with farm or ranch supplies. They are easy to weld on and they will hold any load you put on that trailer. I would say about 500lbs per loop holding capacity. And depending on the loop size/style you can have a tie down point evey 3 to 5 inches if you Want. I wish I knew how send a picture of what I'm talking about. And I can't believe that small utility Trailer manufacturers don't already put them on or at least be an option.

Replace the front draw bar with a 4x4 square tube and triangle it for strength also I'd go with a post for the winch and have a couple of hook points so you can use a snatch block to double the winches power if needed. Also if you put a jack attachment point on the back of the trailer it'll prevent the trailer from tipping while loading and off loading while hooked up or unhooked from a vehicle

Get a generic title for a home made trailer. I built a fourteen foot home made trailer with tandem axles. If I am not mistaken I used two five thousand pound axles, and one of the axles had electric brakes. Welded on a spare tire stand, and welded on a two inch bulldog hitch. Installed six inch by fourteen feet by two inch thick planks. Drilled holes through the planks and through the two inch square tubing by quarter inch thick cross members, and bolted on six inch by three eighths inch carriage bolts. Good project - as you say, the only way is up! I don’t have a trailers now but when I used to have a couple I made a ‘trailer light board’ so the lights could be removed in one go if I needed to swap them to another trailer or remove them for maintenance or to avoid damage etc. Just a 6” wide board with the lights at each end and a couple of quick release mounting points. Short pig tail connector to plug it in to the trailer wiring. Was also handy if I was leaving it somewhere as I could remove it and throw it in the back of the truck so anyone thinking of stealing it would have no lights or turn signals.

Awesome project! I did something similar with a boat trailer I picked up for $50. Barely got it home, one tire didn't want to hold air. Welds were all good so just had to clear off rust, paint and then build a wood frame to go on top, and replace the wheels and fenders. I also cut about 3 feet off the tongue to make it a little more manouverable (sp?) when going through the woods - I use it behind my ATV when going into the hunt camp. Altogether it probably cost me $250-$300, brand new a comparable trailer would have been $800+. As for registering, I was able to register it easily as a "home-built trailer". They didn't even ask to see it. That's here in Ontario Canada.

Have fun on the trailer project! Home made trailers can be interesting. Years ago in the winter, I bought a 14' Shakespeare plastic foam-core fishing boat on a home made trailer. I took it home and fixed the boat up to suit my fishing needs. When it came time to launch it in the spring, I backed it down the boat ramp and tried to push the boat off of the trailer. It was coming off hard. I said to my buddy "Why doesn't this thing want to come off of here!" I heard him roaring with laughter, and he replied "It's because your trailer is floating." Yep, it was floating. The home made bumpers on the home made trailer were made of plastic covered thick foam that kept the trailer, wheels and all, floating, lol. I had to figure out a technique to get the boat off of there. Once I had it figured out, I used it for several years as is. I took it all over the state of Michigan, and had a lot of fun fishing out of that thing.

If you have any rodent issues around there a neat trick is to run the wiring inside brake line tubing. As it looks like you need quite a drop to connect it up, maybe cut the bent tongue off, then make a pair of risers out of square tube to make a mini gooseneck on the tongue, would also let you add a place for a wiring junction block. That way when the front section of the wiring gets damaged or wears out you just replace the short section up front instead of the entire harness. FYI get a set of the cheap HF magnetic towing lights, they make it so much easier to deal with trailers, dead cars and such.

You can buy trailer hitch tubing ( the female end ) in bolt on styles or tubing you can weld up how you like... these accept a standard 2" tube ( like the ball is bolted on )... you make your winch on a male tube you can then slide into any Female 2" receiver on any vehicle ..or into your trailer ( you mentioned a front mount to winch stuff up onto trailer ).. these parts are pretty cheap and you pin them in in seconds ... if you have the smaller trailer hitch setup...those are also available ( or adaptors to fit either size..) ..

I've been looking for cheap trailers for the past several months. My yard and garage are tiny, and I'll need to empty them to build an addition to the garage (storage catch-22!) so I'm aiming to put everything on wheels to stash at friends' houses during construction. So far, I got a pop-up camper chassis with a wooden deck for $100, and a cut-down Ford Ranger trailer for $350. The best parts are that the Ranger trailer has a good bed that I don't need, people charge $300 for solid Ranger rear frame sections here in New England, and it has really good leaf springs that can replace the tired ones on the 180+k Ranger that I use to tow it. It's actually way too high with the good springs, so I think the worn ones will be just right for the much-lighter trailer.

I remodeled a hole house with a 2nd Gen 4runner (gutless) and a $300 HF trailer. Little trailers are so useful. Now I have a one ton dully (same mpgs as the 4 runner) but am thinking about selling it and just going back to the little trailer.

To get registered in Texas. You have to make an appointment at the sheriff’s office so they can inspect it to make sure it is not stolen. After everything checks out, they should give you a paper to take to the tax office to get a plate and little sticker tag. The tax office can give you more info. I have done this once and the Sheriff looked at my trailer like “Piece of @$&”! I am sure it is the same for counts outside of San Antonio as it is for counties outside of Houston.

I noticed the Texas plates. Here in Texas they have REALLY tightened up the regs on registering homebuilt trailers. If it is an untitled trailer (yes, that is a class of small trailers), I suggest getting a head start on the title end of it and reading up on what is required to get that going. Last time i did it, I was not happy about all the new hoops they installed for us to jump through. I'm not saying people like Southwest trailer, Magnum, and other commercial trailer manufacturers were behind these new regs, but I have my suspicions....

Visit HF for trailer gear. Obviously you want D rings/mounting points. You might want a small battery tray for a removable lithium battery for the winch. I actually like to go tall on trailer wheels (if it’s not for ONLY local usage) so that bearings spin slower. Plus it’s better for questionable terrain. Don’t forget a spare tire! Do you want a large gear rack? For things like extra boards or leverage devices? Maybe an ammo can or two for straps and such.

I've seen people spend a lot more for A LOT worse. You did really good. I would replace the wood with planks going the length of the trailer rather than the width like it was. As far as the license plate bracket, I'd just mount it to the fender with a plate light above it so you'll be legal.

🫣 wow what a project!! It seems to sit pretty low, I wonder if you could flip the axle to raise it up a little bit? 🤔 Make sure you have a look at those wheel bearings when you have a chance. I rewired my boat trailer last year and installed the same light kit you have there that was purchased from Amazon, looking forward to your modifications!

If your in Texas just go down to the Annex and ask for a new title application and you well need the following 1 trailer weight 2 trailer weight limit 3 DOT inspection that's done by the county since I believe you're in Baxer county we will need. To talk to the dupty in charge of trailer inspection. Lastly file the application and you will receive a license plate and a VIN number that you need to metal stamp into the frame. That's just from a fellow Texas whom make home made trails. Love your videos Faye.

In Texas trailers that small don't need a plate, but there should be a plastic bracket in that light kit so the plate goes under one of the lights so it's lit up at night. You can get weld piece of angle iron up front then lay some 2x6 length wise down trailer and bolt then down on the rear depending on amount of weight you plan to haul. I'd definitely go get a harbor freight/ northern took trailer for 300 and upgrade the axle. But that won't get you the content you need. Just found your videos looking for a rebuild kit for my 545rfe. Like what you are putting out.

Look into bump stops and shocks. It seems like you might haul a few heavy things. I would totally make a junk yard trip for those. Many parts houses have complete trailer breaks backing plate to studs. That might be something to look at later

LED light kits for small trailers are pretty cheap. If it was mine, that home made drop axle would be gone. You can get a straight axle with 6 lug hubs so you can run some 'yota wheels. That way you can have extra spares and use take off tires from your rig. Do what works for you though.

One hundred is a good price, the wooden slats look like they are from a bed, and i would bet some of the angle iron is bed frame, old bed rails can be a little tricky to weld and not crack, they have a different metallurgy than mild steel, modern bed frames are normally flat mild steel bent into an angle on a press brake and are easier to drill and weld, your trailer deck in front of the axle is so long, and the tongue is long, someone over loaded it up on that part and bent the tongue, i would build a new tongue out of square tube, i recently pick up a 14 ton trailer for $1000 and i'm rebuilding it, new wood deck, new fenders and replacing some other bent parts, the wiring looks about the same as yours, mine is factory built but it had a tough life, you will have a nice little trailer when your done.

100 dollars for a trailer? As long as it has a title, that makes it worth it. I would put steel straps in place of those wood ones. It will make it much more sturdy. Project Crailer?

It's in wonderfully bad condition, the trailer equivalent of the proverbial sow's ear, if you will, so it will be great fun to see you turn its potential into actual virtues. The silk purse analogue in the form of glorious trailerhood will surely emerge. (I think I've had too much coffee.)
