I've been watching anime for well over 30 years, before it even became as mainstream as it fortunately has now - I've seen a lot of differnt shows and "Frieren" is easily in the top three of the best anime of all time. Whether you like it or not, practically no other series offers such a high-quality overall package. Storytelling, animation, music and mood created, characters and development, attention to the smallest details and a great narrative pace. Even after a neutral evaluation, you can't help but give Frieren the masterpiece stamp of approval.

Yes, its a masterpiece. And this can be objectively proven by breaking down and analyzing the story telling, characters' building and development, world building via different methods which the screenwriters used - foreshadowing, micro expressions, mirroring stories and events, allegory, metaphors, symbolism, comparison and other means of expression . How someone feel towards this tale has nothing to do with its level of consistency, coherency and importance of the elements used in building the story, the characters and the world. When you add up the intertwining themes which are explored in debt from more than 1 perspective, the quality of the animation and music this is truly a masterpiece. Objectively - This story bleeds quality from writers point of view. Subjectively - everyone can decide for himself. Just one little example about the high level of writing - the mimic gig serves not only as a comic relief but it also stays coherent with the emotional level of Frieren as character and with the theme of how magic should be fun and enjoy the surprises which a journey brings. The story telling is that solid!

@Scyon13Ай бұрын
Idk if you can say all those elements are objective but what I can say is objective is the production values. The art, sound design, music, voice acting, effects work, cinematography, animation are all top tier among the best anime of all time. The rest is subjective to a degree, many things people who understand writing and storytelling at a deeper level consider great writing are often overlooked by the average anime watcher.

Hey I get it, it's an anime not quite up your alley. The action being them standing around casting defensive spells? Are we even watching the same show? Seriously, Frieren had some of the best action sequences I've ever seen, I'd put them toe to toe with _any_ series, even ones specifically focused on combat.

I feel like this anime is perfect for Millennials who are now in their late 30's and early 40's. Lots of us are currently looking back at the good old days with a different perspective. It's easy to look back and fondly remember the great times, but also wish that we had appreciated them more when they were happening. The introspective aspect of Frieren just really seems to hit home for someone my age. Based on everything the show has to offer I would definitely call it a masterpiece, but that doesn't mean it has to appeal to everyone and I can certainly understand younger audiences not feeling drawn to it. If you like it now but aren't really too interested in it I would say wait 10 years and revisit it. You might find it strikes a different cord with you when you are older.

Yeah, i think you have very reasonable thoughts and i agree that it's not for everyone. Some people say "not for everyone" isn't a compelling argument because, if the show is good, it would simply be liked by everyone, but imo, that's not how the world works. People have preferences, and no matter how great something is, if their standards aren't met, they wont like it. Beyond that, i think you did a good job at recapping the story and what the most imporant parts were, to take with you. I'd say it's a good show, that is well written because most things that happen are accounted for, and don't leave room for many inconsistencies. But, it also feels to me like, the writer never takes risks and very carefully is constructing a narrative. For all the tragedy that was shown, there wasn't that much of an exploration into characters minds or their philosophy, and so i was left unsatisfied with unanswered questions. I gave it a 7/10, but i can definitely see potential for the second season, which could turn the show into a masterpiece.

Damn that was quick! 4 days ago you were at what?, episode 3? Haha. Ok maybe this isn’t definitely the BEST anime of all time, and we may be blinded by recency bias, but in our defense, watching the show weekly with no expectations is a much better experience! 🤣 Yeah the fan favorites are almost exclusively Freiren and Hiemmel, since they are pretty much the most written. Ngl, my favorite is Hiemmel. Yeah, the pace of the anime is undeniably slow but that’s intentional. After all, we’re dealing with a mc who is willing to spend months looking for a flower. 😅The theme of the show is cherishing every second, so pacing like this is integral. Im a sucker for slow paced world building shows, so it’s definitely a top 10 anime for me, given my tastes, but definitely a turn off for others! I love the action in the show but it does admittedly leave much to be desired. The fights are animated well but they’re very short lasting and simplistic. Most of the fights aren’t longer than a minute, and for most of them the method of winning is pretty much the same “a battle of attrition.” The fights make sense thematically but are not the best in terms of a action show. Its just more of a narrative first, action last kind of show. At the very least, they’re not dragged out like in other anime. 10/10 story 8.5/10 characters - heimel and freiren get most of development but side characters are decently built too 10/10 world building 7/10 action 10/10 animation 9/10 pacing
@zaidanhakim49742 ай бұрын
no hate but how watching it weekly is the better experience? I always thought it's disorienting from one episode to another and less focused
@anonymouslyforgotten38402 ай бұрын
@@zaidanhakim4974 It builds more tension and excitement. When you have to wait each week, all those emotions slowly build up in anticipation. Additionally, you get more time to think about the episode, theory craft, and talk about it with others. All of that adds to the experience. Once the new episode episode comes along, it unconsciously becomes a “reward” after a excruciating long wait. Thus results in greater excitement. Its like eating pizza. When you first see the pizza, you’re hungry and excited to eat it. The first slice is absolutely delicious. Most people aren’t satisfied with just 1 slice, so if there’s no more pizza, you’re left feeling hungry and thinking about how good that slice was. So now, you’re just sitting there hungry, waiting for something to eat. So when someone says “Hey there’s one more slice over here” you’re very enthusiastic to get that slice. That enthusiasm makes you enjoy the slice much more! On the other hand, in the event that theres alot more pizza, you can get slice after slice after slice. The first few slices were good, but each following slice only becomes less and less tasty overtime… and then, you’re just feeling fat. Thus, the pizza slices aren’t very meaningful to you. In other words, having scarce episodes over time periods is more enjoyable and memorable, while having it all at once is decreasingly enjoyable and less memorable. You can just grab the next slice, or episode, so your hunger, or emotions, never really get a chance to develop. Its just basic concepts of human psychology and economics: - operant conditioning: continuous fixed interval reinforcement -The law of diminishing marginal utility They’re pretty interesting concepts you should search them up! (Fact check these terms btw, I might be using the wrong ones, been a while since I took these classes. I remember the concept and not the name 😅)

Not my favorite ever, but my favorite last year certainly. I'm following the Manga as well. And honestly, the story slowly builds over time. A second season will be even better than the first season if they put as much effort into the second season as the first. The Manga is far enough along that it's in a third 28 episode season and the current arc seems to be one that will be much longer than anything previously. Basically, while there's still slice of life and character development, there's also more plot driven arcs as the story continues.

Hmmm, I personally think its not about if you're remembered or not that makes life worth living, its what you leave for your fellow people and future gens for them to learn, grow, better themselves and pass on to others what makes your legacy go on. Flamme left a huge impression of Freiren, and while she would be most likely forgotten in history as years passes , the lessons she left to Freiren still carries, as well as what she learned while traveling with Himmel and the Gang and their values that inspire lots of people her included,, slowly but surely as she now opens up and realizes what those teachings are, some of those things she's passing up to Fern and Stark, and no doubt those two will have something new for Freiren to learn who as a long living elf most likely will pass to other people decades or centuries after these current events. Think of it as a positive learning cycle that should pile up and spread

I enjoyed it primarily because I tried as fuck of all the Isekai slop that mimics high fantasy, but since the writers can't write a fantasy protagonist they instead write some social pariah that the Isekai fanbase can relate to getting a harem story and give it fantasy fixings **cough** Mushoku Tensei **cough** and call it a day like most Light Novel based anime these days. Frieren was a good high fantasy anime when the last good high fantasy anime we've had was The Record of Lodoss Wars, and it was a refreshing watch.

Purely from a production level standpoint it's better than 90% of all anime, you obviously missed alot by how you described episodes 11 through 17 and by missing that you're missing the entire point of the story, it's about the journey not the destination, it's about the people and places not the fights. None of it is filler, every episode and notable characters has an underlying message or lesson to them. I think by the way you say things, you're approaching the show from a Shonen perspective, and value fights and spectacle over storytelling and 3 dimensional characters which is fine when I was younger I also had the view but now I'm older and have experienced a lot of things the show hits hard like truck kun 😂 It's not only one of the greatest anime of all time but one of the greatest pieces of fantasy of all time in any medium.

I just want to post a non-NPC comment. I watched your video, it was very balanced. I find it crazy how zealous the fans of this show are. It's actually insane. I feel like this show is not going to have a lot of replay value and will likely be forgotten because, from my observations, most people are watching this show for what it isn't and not for what it is. Almost every commentary made about the show is just to spite the status quo or air some complaint about the "state of the shonen/fantasy/isekai genre". It seems the only way many people can appreciate the show is if they watch a ton of run-of-the-mill Shonen and then have to relieve themselves by watching this show. What is even more frustrating is the amount of pomp and circumstance there is around criticizing the show. People make snide comments about your presumed age, intelligence, emotional intelligence, attention span, or deduction skills. You can tell that the people who are being so defensive are extremely insecure, even hurt. I get it, Frieren is offering some kind of parasocial therapy to a lot of people. They want something affirming, sentimental, and comfy while also still feeling like a Shonen. For all their talk about their intelligence being respected, nuance, and deep themes they won't just jump into Seinen anime and manga because they still aren't ready for actual adult storytelling. They want the comfort of Shonen while also criticizing others for being less capable audience members than themselves. This is an extremely interesting phenomenon.

Why does almost every single fantasy anime need to be in that high fantasy, video game-y, dragon quest style? Where they talk about classes, have big magic circles that shoot laser beams, and talk about mana like power levels from DBZ? It’s about as done to death and tired as the Isekai trope. I wish they would put out more grounded fantasy series that I can take seriously in the style of LotR and Berserk. Something more like Fire Emblem could also work if they don’t go too over the top. Just anything, ANYTHING, other than another dragon quest clone.

I don't actually like anime, but there's still a small handful that manage to have enough quality that I enjoy them in spite of their medium. Frieren wasn't one of those handful. I watched the first episode, and just wasn't enthralled at all. I get what the show was going for, but there was no compelling hook that grabbed me. I guess you're probably looking for more stuff to cover though, so it's time for me to make my pitch for Hajime no Ippo. Hajime no Ippo is incredibly meaningful to me, and it's a crime how little it gets talked about, considering how popular it used to be and the fact that it's nearing 1500 manga chapters now. It's one of those special handful of anime that rise far above the status quo, and while I'm not sure it's your type of anime, I just have to try and shill for it. It's an anime/manga about boxing, created both to entertain and to foster a love for the sport in readers. What sets it apart from both other sports anime and other action anime, though, is the fights. Opponents are humanized and characterized so well that oftentimes, you might root for them just as much as the protagonist. The action is both brutal and technical, making use of the author's deep knowledge of the sport. Every move, every muscle motion, is rooted in reality, with many boxers taking inspiration from real life legends. The action being so good alone wouldn't be enough for the show to be one of my alltime favorites, though. This is a show about men going on very personal journeys of self-discovery. It's about finding purpose, and it's about finding fulfillment. If you're interested in giving it a try, the first season is on crunchyroll. The first three episodes (about an hour total) will give you a taste of what to expect.
