The way you explain these concepts is better than anything on here. Don’t get me wrong, once I get a club and start drilling it’s not that straight forward but I’ve made more progress in a few weeks than I have in a few years watching your videos so thanks.

Right on again. Thanks for your clear and complete videos. You were the first you tube instructor I followed when I started my golf journey 5 years ago. Some how I keep coming back. Weight shifting and reducing arm pull/yank has been a game changer for me. I’m hit 7 irons 170 effortlessly at 59 yrs old. Thanks again.

Great video, I’ve been working on this for a while now and it does take time to get the body to behave and do this naturally. I will say golf is so much more fun when I am swinging good. I think this video is great because the “floating hands” also gets into tempo issues that I and so many others have or had in their swing. Lastly, the “floating hands” starts to teach that club speed at the top means nothing and gets people to get the club speed where it belongs ... at the bottom of the swing. With such a simple videos you are really addressing so many things without people have to think about the other elements. I’m a big fan of your content, great work!

I picked the game back up last year after an almost 10 year absence. Needless to say the time away did me no good, worst I have golfed my life. I found this channel earlier this year as I plan to work on my game. Without a doubt Clay your explanation is the best out there. I have a net in my garage and practice your drills daily. I live in Michigan so its a bit early to hit the course but I can tell just by hitting balls into the net your advice is helping. Keep it up and thank you.

Love this video. I'm a father of a competitive junior golfer. We're a family of limited means, only exacerbated by covid, so paying for high level instruction is not an option. Just wanted to thank you for this content. I absolutely love this video. Love the length of them. Love the manner in which you describe how things should 'feel.' Like how 'the hands should be floating back here' as weigh shifts forward. The junior season started this weekend with our snow Just melting and we had issues this video may help with. Just know this stuff means a lot to a father/son team im Pa. Keep up the great work!

@Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard Would you say it's better to square up the face with the wrist later in the backwing, or could one do it much earlier in the backswing? Pros/cons to each way? Oh, and when you say your hands are floating, what about the arms? I've always been curious about the tension level between the left ARM vs. the right arm (right-handed player) I'd love to get more clarity about the role of each arm, position, tension, how close to chest etc. Do you have a video specifically about that, or could you make one?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 3 жыл бұрын
You can square up the face whenever it suites you best. Some people find it easier to do at the top of the backswing ala Dustin Johnson. Here are two videos that cover each arm in detail: Left arm: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZ98iNSXl8qznJc.html Right arm: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jt2BrNyQudvUhqM.html Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor

@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks. Though it looks like to me, that as long as you can get the left arm doing what it needs to do, the right arm/elbow should pretty much fall in line naturally. I'm just wondering about how loose/relaxed or tight each arm should be at address, and if that should change purposely through the course of the swing.

@@TopSpeedGolf Well, took this to the range today to give it a focused practice. 8 iron going 160 yards. Picked up 20 yards on average by doing this. HOWEVER, it's a new feeling, and it requires more CORE control that I'm simply not used to. I feel so out of control letting my hands and arms float back that I have no confidence of consistency at the moment doing it this way.

There is a slight pause in between backswing and downswing so that you can shift forward and then swing. You call it floating or which basically is a pause, and that's another way of feeling it.

I generally have a DS overslide tendency, with early trail heel raise and right hip extension in early DS. Generally strikes good, with squareish face but CHS is down. I sometimes feel I am too static over the ball during my swing and it feels too armsy. Is it ok for a slight move off the ball even maybe just the slightest of a sway? Jimmy Ballard (any kin?) used to say it was better to “go over the wall” than a reverse pivot. Whenever I do that it seems easier to get to my left side. Plus my tempo seems better with a slight move off the ball. Love your channel 👍

Not sure if you’ve done this yet, but I can hit every iron in bag pretty decently, just the point I feel comfortable hitting comfortable shots, except for my 4 and 5 iron ... any pointers on what to do with these clubs? I use a 3 hybrid typically in place of those clubs so I have to use half, thee quarter and full swings to act as essentially 3 longer irons for me ... as someone who typically hits a 6 iron 165-170 yds it makes it tough not being able to hit an iron into the green but instead rely on running a 3 hybrid up on to it ... 4 and 5 iron, two clubs that always still have the head covers on them at the end of every round, how do I hit them and hit them well?
@3spressoShot

well the first mistake was using iron covers, try taking them off any maybe you nut up.... lol i kid i kid maybe your coming in steep and hitting to down on the ball? possibly try to sweep the ball more.

There really is no different swing with the long irons than with the shorter ones other than they're longer and your swing is slightly flatter. I would practice with my 4-iron all of the time. Find out what your typical issues are and work on those issues until you get to a point where you're crushing that club. If you don't want to go that route, they do make hybrids in 4 and 5-iron lofts. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

not to bring up a can of worms, but what do you think of the 'one plane' swing? I've been seeing this term all over recently, and when I saw a couple of videos, it literally went the exact opposite of your swing theories... in my opinion, the swing doesn't look very athletic (natural), but the claims of why it is supposed to be a great swing are very interesting... mainly, this one youtube channel guy says it is easier to do than any other swing... do you have a video of pros/cons of different kinds of swings? for me, I could watch Clay's swing all day... I just want to make sure that I'm on the right track...

I struggle with this. When I do it right, I crush the ball. It’s similar to actually throwing the ball.

i think if it was just swaying the hips stay pointing straight at impact , where this is slight bump aka a small slide but with rotation

@@3spressoShot - What many of us amateurs do is sway back, then sway forward with little to no rotation in the hips, that is the bad move. Or us amateurs will sway back and forward with a very late hip rotation, that is also bad. Clay’s hips have a lot of rotation throughout the swing.

Clay, Are these two moves with the knees and hands happening at the same time? I really struggle with a steep transition. And have tried everything to shallow but to no avail. If you have any drills that can help out please let know. Thanks!

The problem is you’re showing the weight shift with a sway, you don’t want to move your hips laterally at all. Just shift where the weight is distributed in your feet.

Its the weight of arms and club , ca 30-40 pounds that shifts around the right hip in BS. Pivot ,not a body weight shift. The autonomic (subconscious) balance mechanism controls the feet and leg movement to keep us in balance. The human balance mechanism has evolved to protect our brain , our main survival mechanism. There is no way to balance consciously. The swing happens too quickly and requires too much timing for consistency. Override the autonomic(subconscious) balance mechanism at your peril... = YIPS.
