Fleetwood Mac was coming down from the high of the 70s blockbuster Rumours…when Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood began a Torrid affair that would have major repercussions. It led to one of Fleetwood Mac’s most personal and tragic song… the 70s hit Sara from the album Tusk. Clocking in at at about 16 minutes, the original version of this 70s standard spanned a total of sixteen verses. And even that might not have been enough to contain the true story its author intended. Trimmed down to a radio-friendly four plus minutes, it still alludes to more misadventure than the human mind can grasp.. Best friend betrayals, covert love affairs, cocaine abuse, mystical muses, and band breakdowns… an affair with Eagles Don Henley...it’s all in there. And so much more. So, get ready, we’re breaking down one of the most jam-packed, can’t believe it’s true, music
al dramas ever penned… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. Just to give you an idea of what this is all about, on previous episodes we have covered More Than a Feeling by Boston, Night Moves by Bob Seger, and Rosanna by Toto.. Today, however, we are taking a deep dive into the background and meaning of Sara by Fleetwood Mac.
By 1976, there was so much discord within the ranks of Fleetwood Mac it’s a wonder the band didn’t completely implode. John and Christine McVie were dissolving their marriage, Mick Fleetwood’s marriage to Jenny Boyd was failing, and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, turbulent as ever, had broken up as well. And yet somehow, through all this relationship chaos, or maybe because of it, Fleetwood Mac produced one of the greatest albums of all time... their own masterwork, Rumours.
The collective angst of that torturous undertaking made for some absolutely brilliant material... songs that faithfully documented the heartbreak, the anger and the frustration they all were feeling. And fans couldn’t get enough of it. Since its release on February 4, 1977, Rumours has gone on to sell 20 million records in the US and more than 40 million copies worldwide.
To support this phenomenal album, Fleetwood Mac embarked on an ambitious world tour across the US, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. It kept them on the road the better part of a year. However, in the waning months of 1977, before setting off on the final leg... Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood embarked on another sort of adventure... a covert love affair.
The relationship began one night in LA, during a ten-day touring reprieve. The last ones left at a party, high on cocaine, one thing led to another until... well... I’m sure you can guess what happened next.

I had a super toxic ex who listened to this song a lot, and after our painful breakup I found a lot of comfort in the way the lyrics change from verse to verse. At first, she says "When you build your house, call me home." But by the last verse, it's changed to "When you build your house, I'll come by." I understood that as Stevie coming to terms with her own breakup -- like, at first she wanted him (Don Henley?) to call her back home to the relationship.. but over time, she got over him... to the point where she just wanted to come by for a friendly visit. I listened to this song for many months before my own feelings finally got to the point where I'd be happy to just come by...but I finally got there, and it feels a lot better! I don't know if this has anything to do with what she actually meant when she wrote these lyrics, but this interpretation did give me a lot of comfort personally! So thank you, Stevie! Must be weird to have all kinds of random people interpreting your personal thoughts in their own ways!

Stevie Nicks has also penned a song about the time with Don Henley. It’s a gorgeous heart wrenching ballad on Say You Will. It’s the last track on the double CD “ Goodbye Baby” the lyrics “ don’t take me to the tower “. “ Went to sleep a two woke up as one” Goodbye Baby”. They closed the set on the Say You Will tour with. Goodbye Baby. Man it’s a beautiful , beautiful ballad. The magic of Ms. nicks pen is mind boggling.

Imagine this - It was 1980, I was 18 just graduated high school. I was living alone in my mom's apartment because she had moved to Phoenix. I was in Las Vegas, NV. She took almost all the furniture with her except a stereo and a few odds and ends. I had no idea what I was going to do. My next door neighbor was a pot head and gave me a joint as a going away present because he knew I would be leaving soon. One afternoon, I lit up the joint. I put the stereo speakers facing each other about 2 feet apart and put a pillow on the floor and my head in between the speakers like a really large headset. While getting high for the very first time in my life I heard "Sara" come on the stereo. I had heard it before on the radio, of course, but this was completely different. It was as our good Prof. stated - ethereal, mystical and MAJESTIC! It was seared into my 18 year old cerebral cortex. There is no other song that can just slay me than "Sara". In fact, it can be even hard to listen to now because the damn song just means sooo much to me. I saw Stevie 3 times in concert (once in Tucson late 80's) and got to touch her hand! But she never sang Sara (my only regret on going to those shows of hers) !!! Perhaps one of the greatest songs ever... and it only got to #7!!!!

When I was in 10th grade we had to do a "famous person" report and I chose Stevie Nicks for mine. There was no internet back then so research was done by reading magazine articles and the like. My research gave me so much information that I wasn't really ready to know. It was almost as informative as but not nearly as professional or as touching as yours. Thank you for getting back the memories. Stevie definitely went through some rough times that she used to her artistic advantage to touch so many others. Even though my report was pretty thorough I did learn some new information from your video. Like the song "Sarah" I had to cut so much out to make it presentable for the class. It was too long and questionable subject matter I had to. All the sex and drugs had to be cleaned up and that made her seem better in my report. But you left it all in there. You tell the truth no matter how much it may hurt. She was and still is a great artist.

"I wanna be a star! I don't wanna be a cleaning lady!" Sara is one of my favourite of Stevie's songs. It narrates the story of Stevie's affair with Mick and about how she knew it was doomed to end badly. When you hear her perform it live in 1979/80 right after the affair ended you can hear the anguish in her voice.

A friend of mine who sings in a cover band got a 1st request for this song, told me when she was learning the lyrics, this song made no sense to her. The song is called Sara but she is singing about a man she was involved with. Then sings about Sara the poet in her heart. Anita was wondering who is Sara? Then she sings about a starling flying for days and she was like, huh? What is that about? Then singing about Sara building her house call her home. She thought Stevie is in a relationship with Sara and they are going to share a house together. It was really confusing when she sang Sara when you build your house I'll come by. Then it was really confusing when she sings about a heartbeat that never really died and why don't you swallow your pride. Then when Stevie finally explained what the sing was about then it started to made sense. Anita says Sara and Dreams are her most requested songs.

This song was one of those songs that almost forced contemplation. I grew up in a home that used a wood burning stove to heat the lower levels in a Minnesota winter. Whether it was coffee, wine, or some other beverage I remember sitting in the room listening to this song with just the snap of the wood burning in the stove. My dad and I both love(d) Fleetwood Mac and there were quite a few Sunday mornings we'd put the greatest hits on while we drank our coffee and read the Sunday paper. My dad has been gone now for 17 years but I still fondly remember those days and nights listening to Fleetwood Mac. It was a wonderful childhood. Great video Professor. How did I miss this notification? And FM is my favorite group! Wasn’t Tusk made at Lindsay’s home, where he had built a recording studio? I believe so, and if so, imagine all that drama, with two exes AND having to work all those hours at your ex’s home 🤦🏼‍♂️😂 In “Never Going Back Again,” my favorite FM song, Lindsay sings “Been down one time, Been down two times.” In later years, however, he added an additional line, “Been down three times.” I always figured it meant he got back with Stevie one more time AFTER Rumours was made.

Bro....you are not kidding when you said deep dive! We are talking fathoms here....lol. Sara is undeniably one of my favorite FM songs. I have about 5 that are equally my favorite. I know the story behind the lyrics in and of itself is both fascinating and hypnotic. But I just want to say how stripped and vulnerable Stevie's vocals are on this song. You can feel the angst and sadness.....as well as the acceptance and hope for the future. She is nothing, if not a storyteller. If one is a true Stevie Nicks fan you can tell which songs that she wrote by the words that she chooses. And then there is that raspy yet sultry voice willing to lay it all on the line to convey those words to the listener. So that to ensure that the full impact of each verse is felt, experienced in that moment, and remembered. I mean, we ALL have a favorite verse or phrase from every FM song! Lol. I love the stories that you dug up that are all interwoven and retold to make up Sara. Just her voice alone in this one song should have bumped it up to a top 10 hit. And the music is so ethereal that it feels like we are laying on clouds while listening to it. One of their best and one of yours too. I love the deep dives, man. Keep'em coming.

1980 my father and I started bonding again, I was 14. We'd sit in the afternoon and play chess for hours. I would put in the Rumors 8 track into our console entertainment center, b&w TV with the stereo speakers on either side. Turntable on one side and the tuner, cassette and 8 track on the other. Those afternoons, listening to that album and playing some very competitive games was life changing. A few years ago, I dropped everything, moved from Hawaii to the desert of Utah to my fathers home. He's now 82 and suffered a stroke from a fall in 2018. Parkinson's and now stage 6 Dementia its beyond a full time job. He doesn't remember who I am, but he knows I'm always there, taking care of him. Winter years of life is melancholy and how I long for those earlier days, even the ones we couldn't stand eachother, I am greatful for the stages of life. Before this I couldn't think how I could ever explain to him how much he's been a part of my growing to be a man. Even though he doesn't know who I am, I know he respects the person caring for him. That album has always comforted me, reminiscent to those afternoons challenging my father, mentor and best friend.

We moved from PA to FL in 1979 when I was just shy of 11 years old. The first year was very difficult , since I missed my extended family so much. So my parents sent me on my first flight back in the summer of 1980, all alone, on Eastern Airlines for summer vacation. I still remember the odd earphones that were not wired, but tubes that plugged into the arm rest with ear buds on the ends. Sara was in the short playlist and I listened to it several times on the flight. I cannot, can not, listen to this song without my mind going back to that flight, staring out the window and watching the sunlit countryside drift by below me. It was such a turbulent time of my life, with my parents' own struggles dealing with marital problems and moving south to run from them. And, as we all know, those problems always follow along. But this song made me feel like someone understood my problems, that they could feel what I feel, because that haunting music seemed to be the perfect musical equivalent to what I was feeling. I can’t say definitively that Sara is my favorite Fleetwood Mac song, since there are so many that I love, but I can’t for the life of me think of one that I like more. And I certainly can’t think of one that evokes more emotion…by them or any band. It’s just absolutely beautiful.

I paraphrase when I say this, but Joe Walsh once said that as you live your life, there could be anarchy and chaos smashing into one another causing a situation that when you look back, looks like a finely crafted novel, but at the time it was anything but that. That's basically the premise of Fleetwood Mac's legacy.

Just after the 4:47 mark, you suggest that the Rumours tour continued with a "sold out concert in Wellington" New Zealand. Problem there is that Fleetwood Mac didn't have a concert in Wellington until March 1980. Fleetwood Mac' Rumours tour New Zealand concert was in November 1977 and was at Western Springs Stadium, Auckland. I know it well because I was at the concert on a very sunny Sunday afternoon.

Sara is a beautiful track like no other. It draws the listener in bar by bar. It is truly mesmerising. Undoubtedly one of their best. Stevie Nicks' voice is so unique and the phrasing superb. It is so calming it could be used to promote peace as it has such a chilled vibe. Lindsay Buckingham's solo album Countdown contains some absolutely sublime songs. Thirty years later it is one of my favourites.

The bridge or transition is what I liked about the song. The classical melodic acoustics like the Led Zeppelin song from about the same year All of My Love as well as enunciation of the lyrics.

The chorus lyric in this song was her way of saying that Don Henley said to her, "Stevie, you're the poet in my heart, never change, don't you ever stop." So in essence Sara was Stevie Nicks herself, singing about her own life. The song was mainly about her affair with Don Henley and their aborted baby, I had heard that for years, but there were nuggets of other people thrown in, such as Mick Fleetwood and her actual friend who was also named Sara. This was the only good song on the Tusk album. I always thought the song Tusk itself was drivel and couldn't believe a band of Fleetwood Mac's caliber would record such a sound.

I think there are so many great favorites of fleetwood mac however Silver is really my favorite. There is so much in this love heartbreak betrayal pain and raw emotional anger and even revenge and curses. Talk about layers. Yes i think that is my all time favorite Mac song via break up songs of all time

Thank you for this. "Sara" has for years been my song. Soothing... and as someone said below - like being wrapped in a blanket. It hurt my heart to hear that you had lost someone. I totally understand. The song is my number one played in my music library with the live versions from FM Live and The Tusk Deluxe set coming very close to the top. The 205 release of TUSK Deluxe included the 5.1 mix of the album...will never forget playing it on my surround set up. I wept. The 5.1 version also includes these lines at the end, after "I'll come by..." that have always been lost in the album version fade : Oh Dreaming And the wind be came crazy And he reached up gently Dreaming And the wind became crazy And there’s a heartbeat and it never really died Dreaming Never really died Would you swallow your pride Could you speak a little louder? Dreaming All I ever wanted Was to know that you were dreaming. And there’s a heartbeat and it never really died

Also from the live version included on the TUSK Deluxe from Tucson 8/28/80, this is the conclusion of the song: Sara Oooh down through the night Oooh Sara There’s a heartbeat and know it never really died Never really died Swallow all your pride It was such a heartache All I ever wanted Was to know that you were dreaming Sara Listen to that crazy wind because it will make you smile Sara Said Sara

It makes sense to me that all the stories influenced Stevie. Her lyrics go in so many directions, but still manage to come together somehow. That’s the magic of songwriting, and singing from the soul.

One night I started listening to king extended versions and live versions. It had always been one of my favorites and also got me through many dark times knowing sone one else felt this way . I couldn’t stop listening to it and also noticing the spooky sonic tapestry they weave behind the vocals. I feel like it’s the musical version of a magic spell. It gets in you and won’t let go , so beautiful but spooky I’m obsessed with it and the feeling it evokes as well as the production. Amazing

Dude!! You smashed this out of the park! So well done! Story with the pertinent music quips slathered in at the perfect time. So well researched! You blew me away. (And I'm a huge Fleetwood Mac fan) There is no way I cannot sub! Well done! I find it amazing, and for them, terrifying, that they have to reach inside and bare their emotional soul but what comes out is magical. Sara is my favorite FM.

My favorite song of all time. I heard it played on the radio in the UK back in 1979 and it stuck in my mind. But it wasn't until a couple of years later I was in a relative's car and he had this on tape and hearing the full stereo mix in hi fi just blew my mind. I bought the album because that was the only way to get the song. I really didn't like Tusk initially but it's quickly became an album I got obsessed with. It's still their best album to me. It's amazing that decades later I am still learning new things about Sara and hearing new-to-me altenate takes/mixes. I was amazed to read only a couple of years ago that it's actually Stevie's keyboards we hear. That hypnotic lilting sound that could never be repeated.

Knowing the story between Stevie and Henley as well Joe Walsh and as how Don’t come around here cameabout, I think that Stevie was a magnet to craziness. Sure craziness that helped with creative genius but… I love Stevie.. which proves my point hahaha I always like the crazy ones 🤪😜😝

I’ve asked myself more than once if ‘Sara’ is the best song ever written. If it isn’t it’s certainly a contender. I heard Mick invented the brushes in lieu of sticks drum technique specifically for Sara, not sure if it’s true. I’ve heard the 11 minute version on KZfaq and it’s wonderful. I love how it ends just as it’s beginning, how it seems it could go on forever as if it has a “heartbeat that never really dies”

With John and Christine already splitting up, Mick and Stevie should have both realized that their relationship never would have worked. Honestly, the words don't really matter so much because Stevie makes it clear that there IS tragedy and a sense of loss whether it's her friendship with Sarah or her breakup with Mick or the baby. For me, the melody is the hook. It's a beautifully written and performed song.

Amazing video about my favorite song from FM .l always think when ever l listen this song is so painful and hauntingly Stevie's own signature, in my own opinion this song reflects more than loss and heartbreak in the verse that says "He was singing and undoing the laces undoing the laces " it might refer to the doctor preparing to perform the abortion like in a very cold attitude well that's my own silly interpretation of this song.
