Matt Berkeen, YZ 250 2 stroke in the 450 Main, what a fun bike to ride

I bought a 2022 YZ25FX last winter, and was going to do so regardless of limelight success; but let me tell you, seeing Christian Craig's and Eli Tomac's success in Supercross and then the outdoors sure reassured my decision. Even knowing that my stock bike and their race bikes probably don't have much in common. Hydraulic clutch isn't much of a sale item for me, but e-start sure was. I love the way the clutch feels on my Yamaha.

Roczen had some influence on me buying my 2013 250sxf. Great bike. Rode it for 8 years no problems! KTM just remodeled all their bikes and they were killing it. Fast, great handling and E-start! Got made fun of for E-start but I knew it was great! Now everyone has it and loves it. I remind them I had it before it was cool. That bike is still competitive today!

Not to mention the fact that when I was in the market for a new bike a kawi was the only one I could find locally. Closest yz250f was 600 miles away and ktm was 350 miles away. As a weekend warrior the choice was easy for me

I think the reason for wanting a certain brand of bike is either because you developed a love for that brand or it’s because of your price range your willing to spend on a bike . Like I’m definitely a big Yamaha guy . I was born in 03 so I grew up watching chad race and my dad even now is still a big fan of chad . My dad and chad are the same age so he remembers the day chad came over to the us . My first bike was a ttr 50 when I was three because my parents never had the money to buy a pw. I learned to ride that dirt bike without training wheels before I even learned to ride a bicycle without training wheels. I had a ttr 125 lw from the age 12-16 and then Christmas in 2020 my youngest brother got a yz 65 , my middle brother got a yz 85 and I got a yz250f . It’s because of who I watched racing most of my life and because I grew up riding brand is the reason to why I like Yamaha so much .

I have been a Kawasaki guy for a long time. Favorite Color is green so it makes it easy for me to want Kawasaki, but because of Deegan I would consider riding a Yamaha for my next bike.

Was working at a race shop an after i left quit...it became the factory KTM TEAM when they made their racing return to the USA nationals...they were not playing around ...all in was tje best term i could come up with....after finding out a little an going to a few races with the team an a supercross....it was the very beginning so i wouldnt be rude they were soul fully an totally committed to building a great bike not playing at all....which is very cool...looking back...

Grew up riding only Hondas and still love Hondas to this day. After taking 10 years off of riding, I wanted bike that was reliable like a stock 450, less power than a 450, but faster than a 250. I know I could have bought a 2 stroke, but I wanted a 4 stroke for my first bike back. This left my only option being a 350, which limits me to one manufacturer with different color options. Overall, couldn’t be happier with my 2022 FC350. To have a very unfair comparison to 2005 CRF250, the FC is better in every category. Well almost, the white brothers exhaust on my modified 250 sounded better…..until your ears started ringing.

End of the day it’s all personal preference. Basically this argument comes down to what kind of a frame feel you want because any pro buying a bike and a lot of weekend warriors will get work done on suspension anyways, and if not most people won’t complain about any set of forks on a bike tbh

I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE BUY BECAUSE OF COLOR, FAVORITE RIDER, AND GRAPHICS. VERY FEW LOOK INTO THE LOCAL DEALER THAT WILL SUPPORT THEM WITH PARTS/SERVICE AND OR THE BUILD QUALITY OF THE BRAND.

I’ll take my showa suspension and cable clutch over any color ktm.

In my 43 years riding, I base my ALWAYS NEW bikes purchase on , 1st 2 stroke always 2nd yamaha yz250 because it's 4 grand cheaper then a ktm 250xc. 3rd what my dealer has in the shop ( only 1 dealer in a 100km radius , he sells ktm Yamaha and Suzuki) 4th seeing who's bike is breaking down and why when we're on the trail or track. 5th parts availability, yz parts are everywhere. 6th I'd love E start but I've been kicking it for 43 years so why stop now lol.. 7th I ride what I like, I don't care what you or the next guy likes, it's got wheels,,, let's ride 10-4 😎🤪 My advice to all the new riders, be honest with yourself, if your racing mx and wanna be that guy and your parts Are paid for by someone else, race a 4 stroke. But if you just love riding dirtbikes and don't have deep pockets, by a 2 stroke, they're easier n cheaper to maintain, go way faster then most can handle anyways, and 2 strokes are just darn fun. Especially a 125 or 150. It's all about being happy and having so much funn you forget all your shit till you get back to work.

After riding my KTM 525 I've never thought about another brand until recently. Which would be Yamaha, is that because they're winning, partly. But I also hear nothing but good things about them.

I think I can appreciate all bikes. These companies are hitting the mark, even vintage bikes are just rad. I don’t love the side of the sport that feels kind of elitist. Everyone seems to need a 450 and it gets a little bit like it’s own fashion show. Just ride, have fun.

This is why were seeing the MX bikes divide into the standard line and the "premium" race version. Most people are fine with the standard version and would rather save the money since they're not to the level where all those premium parts will make a difference.

When you look at the intake tract, air filter placement throttle body position in the stack, etc. It's pretty clear that Honda and Kawasaki are copying KTM. If the YZFs had a traditional configuration I think they would be as well, but they seem to be the only Japanese manufacturer that's thinking outside of the box. I'm still eager to see the reviews on the 23 YZ450F, the stacked transmission could really make that bike feel lighter or less bulky and it could also allow them to move some of the weight more rearward. I love my KTM but I also have a 2018 YZ450 and it's a close second, what really stands out to me on the KTMs is just the fit, finish and attention to detail, hydraulic clutch, brembo brake calipers with steel Braided lines and oversized rotors, the hubs just look more sturdy, but the spokes appear to be thinner, excel rims, even the way the shrouds seem to latch onto the rest of the bike works better. On a side not I almost always choose a bike based on reviews and then it comes down to brand loyalty.

10 of those pounds come fr air suspension. Which you have to take that off for cone valves anyway if your racing a high level

I like a juice clutch for mx but prefer a cable clutch on a xc / Enduro bike.

The Japanese still offer dual sports that are almost unchanged for 30 years. They are quite conservative across the board, with all manner of off road / motocross / dual sports.

I remember when the AMA production rule came in 1986/87 that meant that they were not allowed to race works bikes anymore. They had to race bikes that were essentially what the public was buying from the dealerships and Honda decided that they would sell almost works bikes to everyone… the 1987 CR 250 was so fucking awesome straight from the crate! They cornered the market from that point onwards until the other manufacturers caught on to what Honda were doing a few years later!

I know many guys that still choose the simpler kick start clutch cable low maintenance Japanese bikes because of the ease of maintenance and abuse they take over a long time has any Rider knows the old Honda XRS we're damn near bulletproof

Keep in mind most privateers go for whoever pays the higher contingency, mxa did an article on the payments awhile ago

im a Suzuki guy. i will never ride a bike past 90 percent of its ability. i have an rmx450 and rmz250 both new for trails and mx and their combined price is lower than what a 500exc goes for. That money saved means less dark clouds when riding, more money for more trips. No finance owing etc. Ill forgo 5kg and 5hp and electric start for that. Plus im not a maintenance freak and literally never had an issue with a Suzi.

KTM advertised weight is dry, Japanese use wet weight. 2023 KTM 450 dry weight is 226lbs add in fuel, oil and coolant you are at 240lbs. 2023 YZ450F is 240lbs wet. CRF450R 245lbs. KX450 243lbs. RM is the only piggy at 247lbs. KTM posts dry weight as marketing ploy to seem way lighter than they actually are. Still great bikes but to say Japanese weight 15lbs more is completely inaccurate.

I have ridden a Yamaha for 10 yrs now cause they are reliable for me but now that tomac in on a yz is even better

When they was fully developing the bikes in 1986 and after to get them where there at now the Japanese manufacturers where competing to have the best bike ,but more than anything you stick with the bike you grew up on like my first bike was a brand new 1982 XR80 ,and 3 years later after totally smashed the rims ,and thrashing the entire bike my dad bought me another Brand new Honda cr80 ,and now almost 40 years later I have 8 Honda bikes in my garage that I ride so I think its mostly what you grew up riding just like Trucks that your dad drives 9 times out if 10 your going to like that brand

The percentage of bikes sold with their sole purpose for racing is peanuts compared to how many the weekend warriors buy.

I think you're missing the key issue, they may not sell more from sponsoring racing, and a winner, but if they didn't race, I am pretty sure they'd sell a lot less. All marketing isn't geared towards direct response.

You gotta give Yamaha credit with the mobile tuning app. That was/is on the forefront of what could be available for the weekend warriors.

Majority of riders get what they can afford and more importantly maintain. When performance comes at a premium price at the cost of reliability people will overlook the 15pounds if it gets them home again. Winning races on contract free bikes is an entirely different situation.

I’ll never be a pro racer so I buy old Suzuki 2 strokes because I love the look and pastrami really. They are all good bikes

To say the Japanese approach to redesigning dirt bikes is conservative, would be an understatement. And KTM, on the other hand, has gone all out innovating, because they are a premium brand, that's growing, vs. the old crowd who has had the lions share for decades.

Im a Honda man but if they come out with a hydraulic clutch the first thing I’ll do is convert it back to cable. Hydraulic clutches are great for people who can’t bicep curl 15 pounds 🤣

My first bike was a 1980 YZ 80 , that thing ripped and when you hit it's powerband it was explosive lol. Scary fast , It's mind boggling that these little guys can throw around 450 cc bikes like they do and live to tell about it .

We are nearing the latter part of 2022 and Suzuki still hasn't made any changes... so sad. Having a modern KX450, I have to admit that it's too much power for me... if I ever get another dirt bike, it will probably be a 250... maybe a 350? Anyway, in the past I only rode Honda's when I raced, so did my brother, but one year he bought a Suzuki, and we bother liked it. Unfortunately, it seems like Suzuki is content on letting their dirt bikes die a slow death?

Kawasaki has a great contingency program, it pays to ride them.

I dont own a ktm and couldn't afford one... but I also can't afford a new Japanese bike either. What I will say about ktm is there innovation is why they are killing it on sales. What other brand has a full mx lineup of new modern 2 strokes and 4 strokes of all sizes.....,a entire uniquely developed offroad line of 2 strokes and 4 strokes also of all sizes, then a exc street legal verson. If Japanese manufacturers want to compete they will have to step there game up because ktm has a bike for everyone and everything. Then with that they also own husky and gas gas. Sure they may be a little more money but if your spending 10 11 k on a bike you can spend a little more and get a bike developed perfectly for any kind of riding you will be doing right out the box.

I weighed a 2022 ktm 450sxf full of fuel and it was 240lbs and a 2022 Yz450f full of fuel was 245lbs. These were off the show room floor. No hand guards or anything extra. Dealership floor to the shop. 5lbs difference. So 5lbs must feel like 15-20lbs. 2017 Rmz450 was 265lbs stock with fuel. There’s your 20+ lbs.

I am 50 years old. I had to go back with the exception of one time I have had 5 Hondas and 1 Suzuki since the late 80s. Hondas have always lasted the longest and been rock solid. My 12 year old is on his third Honda now and his 2nd still runs like a top and his first ran great when we sold it. Might not be the fastest or the lightest but Honda has always done right by me and we love them. Even my wifes side-by-side is a Honda lol

Reliability, features and price sell bikes. The yamaha 250 has alot of features at a great price so it sells like crazy. The ktm 2 strokes sell like hot cakes, especially the new 300

Im not really an any brand guy as such but i wouldn't buy anything other than an Austrian bike atm. And its so sad to see Suzuki give up on the industry. Been praying they bring something epic out but they will just dwindle away now

Not sure how old this is but talking about Jap evolution is a non thing. Stark Varg is the complete revolution and if you have absorbed any of Ryno’s riding tips it’s like he is talking about being glued to an electric bike. (No gear lever or brake pedal to mess with foot position)

I think Chads points are almost backwards. The average Joe would USUALLY want those things that make their bike easier, lighter, cooler…etc. I was a Suzuki guy forever because of their turning. But, after a couple years of them not at least trying to stay with the competition, it’s like “okay, well I guess they don’t t care about bettering the experience for their buyers” and now that’s truer than ever.

Japan is heavily leaning towards profit and parts supply chain, KTM is more focused on giving people the bikes they want to ride rather than the bottom line.

A lot has changed, but they’re still behind, not to mention the 2T stuff that is light years ahead now. The Japanese basically evolve 2 models, KTM does like 10, plus all the ADV stuff and cool niche bikes like the 350s & 150s, and in some respects the 300. I’m a little surprised they don’t produce a 500SX 2T or at least offer some big bore kit. Imagine how many of those they’d sell just for for timber sled conversions. BRC has made a business out of it. Clearly there’s a demand for a 500 2T in the market. The Japanese lineups bore me to tears, which is pretty much why I never even consider their bikes anymore. Plus I hate working on them. You can tell most of their engineers are not riders who have actually worked on their bikes before.

A lot of people don't like hydraulic clutch. Ktms are made out of butter and have absolute garbage suspension. It's a steady stream of ktms through my shop because they fall apart

I never ever thought I would betray my loyalty toward the japanese brands, ever. Then in 2017 I got tired of reading in MXA how amazing the KTMs were. I've always been steered correctly by that magazine and those guys. So, as uncomfortable as I was, I bought and paid for my first Husqvarna. I'm now on my 4th one now and I'll never look back until the rice burners improve year over year and catch up. After 50 years of being a weekend warrior, I'm astounded that the japanese don't have a clue. Try this, engineer that, over think this and mess up that. If ONLY they would have simply built on what was good and made it better. That's exactly what KTM has done and that is exactly why they are kicking the ass of the japanese brands. Their bikes are everywhere here in Florida. Sometims at the track there's literally 10 KTMS for every 1 Japanese bike.

The bike brand loyalty is more of what brand names have a dealership with in 25 miles of ur town what do local racers ride an who has the disttibutor new sales bike shop u can go an buy i ride honda because i like that bike an yamaha for road racing they were the 2 brands for more Ny NJ area of the US nirth east

Also don’t need all this aftermarket exhaust and so on to make it more powerful! Also Japanese bikes have been more reliable than KTM! Especially the Yamaha has been praised by every magazine of being the most bullet proof bike and most reliable and less major problems.

Respect his opinion but look at all the orange you see out there with the weekend warriors. The internet is extremely influential. There are a ton of serious riders riding orange. Especially in the single track/enduro world. Alot of those guys have KZfaq channels or some sort of significant social media following. Average dudes see the serious riders and they follow suit.

People tend to buy what’s affordable! If not KTM would reign supreme

European brand of bike = insane price, parts and dealer support are difficult to find within any reasonable distance. Japanese brand bikes= more reasonably priced and dealers are plentiful throughout the US .
