This song is beautiful and ozzys voice is perfect as always. The song was written about the drummers break up from his wife. Ozzy re-released this song with his daughter Kelly with slight lyric changes to make it about a daughter growing up.

No actually the song was written for Ozzy you know John Osborne, it was about the demise of his relationship and his marriage with Thelma his first wife where they had 2 children she finally had enough of the crap going on, you know the Rockstar life 🤔 and I only know this it's well-documented but I also know Ozzy personally. I've not seen Ozzy since 1991 and no we never spoke about this song but it's very obvious who it's about and what happened.....

The band was renting a house to write songs for the New album. Tony found a piano and started messing about on it. Ozzy started singing a melody over the top of what Tony was playing. Geezer chirped up with I've got some words for that. The song is about Bill's divorce that he was going through at the time. Truly a band effort.

Oh! Once I had the most magical experience. Was going to my first Ozzy concert (No More Tours Tour 1992) and my parents dropped me off at the venue at about 8 am, lol. Arco Arena in Sacramento. So I was wandering around the empty venue at so early an hour, and found where the line was going to be to get in, and there was a security guard already there. I asked him how close can I get to the gate and he showed me where I could wait, first in line, lol. I sat down, lit a smoke, and after a minute or two, heard a piano. Very loud, very graceful, beautiful piano. I knew the song immediately as Vol 4 is one of my all time fav albums. It was just a tad off from the recorded version but it was definitely Changes. Then... Ozzy began singing it. Me and the security guard locked eyes for a second, and did not move as the song played. It was Ozzy doing soundcheck, and he was singing it with all his heart. A couple other people arrived to get in line behind me and none of us spoke. Time stopped. Soon, the piano was perfect note for note, Ozzys singing was perfect but definitely live and not a recording. We all just listened, about 5 of us, total strangers, at 8 am, outside the gate at Arco arena, just listening to this song. By the time the song was over we all had water in our eyes. I thought Ozzy would sing a few more, if he was doing soundcheck, but he did not. Just sang Changes and that was it. The music stopped, and we were in awe of it. That was the first time in my life that I heard Ozzy live. Could not see him because we were outside, far away from the stage where he was. He probably didn’t think anyone could hear him or would hear him that early in the morning. The concert that night was off the charts but I will never, ever forget hearing him sing Changes at soundcheck. Thank you, Ozzy. He brought beauty into my life in such an ugly, mean world. Ozzy is cool af.

Heavy metal always had that reputation of being loud, angry, obnoxious etc., but so many bands have moments like this. At the end of the day, we're just people too, and we hurt and certainly express that in our music. I could send you on a whole rabbit-hole of things like this. And it's the same with punk bands as well.

I've had 5 strokes and through being in and out of ICU and a year in hospital. My fiance and best friend, the only person I've ever opened up to in my 42 years. She took care of me throughout, and stopped going to dr. She was having bad stomach pains one night and called a ambulance. That was the last time I seen or heard her voice, they found she had stage 5 cancer and went into acoma and died that night. Between the strokes and her passing, this song means and hits me so different than when I first heard it. Cherish every moment you have with friends and family, you never know when something is going to happen. Hope everyone reading this is healthy and well.

Agree with others, this song works bettet in the framework of the album, as a pause in the hard rock/metal tunes before and after, as opposed as a stand alone track. We always felt it was a bit sad and depressing. A better change of pace track for me is Sleeping Village, which leads into Warning, arguably Iommi's most powerful solo. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

This was released in 1972 off Black Sabbath's 4th album 'Volume 4'... I believe it was to shock people who thought that Sabbath was incapable of making a touching ballad... It was so unlike their brand of heavy rock, but like Led Zeppelin, they did not want to be pigeonholed in the category of heavy rock... Sabbath recorded "She's gone" in 1976, that was similar to this. Decades later, Ozzy's daughter Kelly Osbourne re-recorded 'Changes' w/ Ozzy as a father/daughter duet and made it a hit single.

Black Sabbath was originally a blues band called 'Earth'. They have quite a bit of soulful, bluesy stuff in their catalog.

I love your reactions to some of these more obscure Sabbath tracks that get no love....they are way more than just metal

When the same line is played repeatedly without any variation it’s called a “vamp”, and that’s what Tony Iommi is doing on the piano for most of the song. I think the strings are what makes it so melancholy, but that’s the beauty of this song. The bassist, Geezer Butler, wrote the lyrics based upon the break up of the first marriage of the drummer, Bill Ward.

Perfect song for you lady lex, you're going through big changes with the baby coming. And you'll better have your will done before the baby gets here.

Wow. I completely forgot about this song. I don't think I've heard it in 30 years or more.

Another side of Sabbath, with Tony on piano here and the mellotron (which is a keyboard instrument with pre-recorded strings on tape inside - a precursor to synthesizers and temperamental as all hell) played by Geezer. For another song like this, but one which I think has more impact due to the gentleness and despair in Ozzy's vocals, listen to "Solitude" off Master of Reality - perfect beauty in darkness - Tony also plays flute on that one.

This is definitely from Sabbath's most Progressive album to at that point. Volume four has a lot of experimentation on it.. and I believe it was the first album recorded in California which accounts for the.. brighter tonality.. since everyone is blasted out on coke and that tends to muffle the high register in your ears over prolonged Studio sessions. Didn't hurt the song writing in any way though, it just broadened the pallet of sounds they were working with and the options they had now that they were in a position to be able to take longer in the studio to get their material together. I would say this and the album "Sabotage" are high water marks from this era
