Mardones had a friend that helped him write this song by the name of Robert Tepper. The 16 year old was a neighbor whose dad had run out on the family. Mardones paid her to walk his dog and clean his apartment. One day Robert saw the 16 year old girl and said....Hey Benny she's cute. Benny replied, She just 16 years old, leave her alone.

I found out after Benny died that those vocals at the end were sung as guidance for a saxophone solo they were going to lay on in post-production. After they heard the voice they decided to keep it. I wish my friend was alive so I could ask him to confirm or deny.

I actually knew Benny mardones ... I met him in the '90s right after he did a commercial for Glacier Ridge... I was a bar manager at the time in an English restaurant... The glacier riidge people brought Benny and his band to our restaurant to celebrate the commercial and we closed down the restaurant for the Glacier ridge people and Benny and his band and probably about 80 other people... That group kept me busy slamming drinks for about 4 hours straight and when it did die down a little bit I had some time to talk to Benny... He was good enough to take pictures with our waitresses and sign some autographs... Benny had a good heart and he cared about people... He was happy when he was having a glass of scotch and telling a southern yarn... This song propelled him into the public eye and it went national but he was never able to follow up with another one as good to keep himself in the national eye... I was sad when he got sick and then he eventually passed... I just thought back of the conversations that he and I had... He was such a good person...R.I.P. Benny...

@adamhommey I just heard this song and fell in love with his music. I started looking into the several clips on the background of this song. The first story was about the abandoned children then I came across this clip that he made about saying good-bye to Angie McCartney and he talks about the beetles and Angie's daughter Ruth, possibly being his child. So, do you know anything about this clip? I'd love to hear your opinion on this. Thanks kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d6unh5Seut2snnU.htmlsi=wbbLH_ujOZoN6YZW

I can verify. Benny was a friend of mine for many years. 20, even 30+ years on, she still sent Benny cards and letters thanking him for his kindness and helping her family when they were in the spot after their dad walked out. He showed them to me. Heidi attended a memorial concert held in Benny's honor in Syracuse last year. I couldn't make it, but about 20 of my friends were there and got to meet her. I can also attest to his generosity, kindness, and overall good nature as a human being.

Your first reaction to the opening line was what most people thought. It's sad really. It's about a 16 yr old girl who was abandoned by her father and Benny kinda became caretaker of her and her brother and sister. Eventually, because of this song Heidi, the young girl had a very happy and amazing life. It shows me how one act of kindness has so many repercussions, not to mention when the world heard the true story, it propelled this song to the top 10 3 separate times. Look up "professor of rock" for the whole story.

@tamoshanter6268
@tamoshanter6268 2 жыл бұрын
I call bull on all these replies, @Janice Duke is right, there are interviews out there with Benny telling this story. The 16 yr old, her sister(17) and her brother (15) knocked on his door crying after their father left the family. He tried to comfort them the best he could, then told them he would give them jobs. He gave the brother 20 dollars a week to run grocery errands, and the sister 50 dollars a week to walk his dog before and after school. Benny and his songwriting partner had worked the entire night on the song, had the melody but didn't have words or a good first line into the song. He had the windows blacked out and didn't realize it was morning until the 16 yr old opened the door to pick up the bassett hound to go for a walk. She came in dressed in his words "a sixteen yr old going on 21". When she left with the dog, his writing partner said something like "Good Lord", and Benny said to him "She's just 16 yrs old, leave her alone." Then he started using the line in the song, and the rest of the song wrote itself. When the song started to take off, some radio station or promoter asked Benny if the girl was real or made up, he said real. They wanted to put her on the air, which they did. She was a hit and because of that she ended up meeting and marrying the son of a real estate developer who developed properties many places including Puerto Rico. She ended up living in a mansion there and took her mother to live with her and her brother got a job with the company. She sent him Christmas cards every year and never forgot the help he gave her family.

BUT, if you want your minds blown in similar fashion, please check out Santa Esmeralda's version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" from around the same period as this Benny Mardonez joint. But it's got to be the long version! Ok, actually the version from Kill Bill that's "only" 10 minutes long is the best. Not exactly. He was born in Cleveland, OH and grew up in Savage, MD. Benny's full name was Ruben Armand Mardones, Jr. His father (obviously Ruben Armand Mardones, Sr.) was Chilean, of Mapuche and Castilian ancestry; his mother was American of German ancestry. In person, he was short, stout, very Native American looking with a large head and narrow shoulders, with natural blond hair. Ruben Sr. left when Benny and his full sister were toddler-aged. He took up with a woman who he had a daughter with (the daughter was put up for adoption but eventually found Benny and they got to meet); Ruben Sr. went back to Chile and had two more daughters (Patricia and Pamela) and two more sons (Ruben Armand II and Patricio) through his second and third marriages. Benny eventually met all of his half-siblings, though some of them don't speak English and they had to communicate through a translator.

Shawn & Mel; U guys r great! Thank u 4 critiquing "Into The Night". It was a Top 20 hit in 1980 & in 1989! There's really a wonderful story behind this song that some don't know. Some great interviews of Benny's can b found on KZfaq. Benny was a U.S. Veteran, a great person & fantastic singer & performer!

Bennys voice has been described as "otherworldly" towards the end of this amazing song. Tommy Mottola said he had one of the best voices he had ever heard. Rest In Peace, Benny. Your music eas so underappreciated:(

I remember thinking this way when I was a teenager. And now that I am very old I realized that though people in their 30s and 40s and 50s who are trying to warn me very well knew what love was and I had not a clue what it was. It's crazy how someone who's only 15 or 16 thinks they know more than somebody who's been here twice as long as them LOL

More than 42 tears ago my precious wife and I were married and we're still together and going strong. She was still 16 at the time and I was 20 and NO, she wasn't pregnant. At 16 she was far more "grown-up" than I was. It's not all about the age of the bride and groom, but how much they love and treasure one another! She's the best thing that ever happened to me. Just saying!

This way it was in the 1960s and 70s, everything was heartfelt sung with passion, ending meant what they were singing about!, Not like today is garbage!, I miss music from that era , Al Green Barry White The O'Jays Tina Turner Smokey Robinson these are just some of the artists that made world history in the music business Soulful music , unchained Melody the righteous Brothers !! And so many more!!,

SHAWN AND MEL!!! Here is a nice LIVE version of Benny, singing this on stage!! ENJOY!!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qchon9WH37SbeWg.html Benny Mardones (pronounced like Mar-don-ez); was and is one of the Greatest Singers of All-TIME!!! He was on a par with the Great Steve Perry from the Group, Journey! This is one of my favorite songs of all-time, and I listen to it daily!!! There was alot of jealousy, going on, when Benny was HUGE, and alot of his other songs didn't make it to the Charts, BUT YOU MUST listen to all his other songs, from the 80's, 90's, when his voice was the BEST!!! Find them on KZfaq, etc! His other songs are Beautiful, even all the tracks on his Albums!! Thank you for keeping his magnificent Voice, alive and in the Public's ear, so they can hear him!!! He was a genius singer songwriter, and also a very beautiful human being, inside and out!! He is so sadly, no longer with us, but I'm sure, singing his heart out, right now, in Heaven!!!

Shawn & Mel, we need to speak! Thank you for your enthusiasm and support. "Benny Mardones was first discovered literally coming off a bus from Savage, MD by Joel Diamond. Joel gave Benny his opportunity to write and sing his first recordings. Joel produced Benny's first record called "Please Say You Want Me" followed by Joel producing "Tomorrow Means Another Day We're Apart" having gotten Benny a deal on CBS Records. Benny certainly carved out a major recording career after that having written and produced on of the most iconic rock songs ever and to this day, still in the Top 25 most played songs on the radio, "INTO THE NIGHT". It was Joel who made the Mike Curb connection for Benny to re-record "Into The Night" which landed him his second Top 10 record with the same song. It was only recently that Joel took Benny back in the studio to record "Into The Night" for the third time. Benny Mardones has the distinction and unmatched record of having had the same song "Into The Night", recorded by the same artist Benny Mardones, different labels and decades, FIVE (5) times charted on the Billboard charts. Benny is also being considered for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Benny passed away much too early in June, 2020." Also thought you might enjoy the last version of "INTO THE NIGHT" by Benny which I produced 40 years after the first one ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9l2qdCAmrW8qYk.html Joel Diamond www.joeldiamond.com e; jdiamond20@aol.com

I always loved this song as well loved the beat, his voice everything about it, including the fact that it brings me back to a time in life that was more carefree and brought back good memories. Now that I hear it again and I listen to the words more closely and it’s a grown man singing this about a 16-year-old girl and there are actually so many songs out there from artist back in the day who were adults who sang about relationships and desires for young girls and a lot who actually Had relationships with young girls.
