WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

Aging is to me a perplexing process. It seems that no matter how old your body gets your spirit, soul, whatever you call your inner self, stays basically the same. It’s sort of like riding around in a car to me. The vehicle gets older and starts breaking down over the years but the passenger inside ages much more slowly. Remember that the next time you’re around someone in their 80’s. Inside that old body is a much younger driver. Lol

What a fantastic analogy and way of explaining what aging truly does feel like! My mother use to tell me all the time that her reflection would often surprise her because what she felt like inside did not match what she saw in the mirror.

Wanted to say pretty much the same thing. At 77, this is absolutely the way of Life. The ‘breakdowns’ are more frequent and sometimes more uncomfortable, but the mind doesn’t change. You owe it to yourselves to plan for the future but never short change your lives today because the future is not guaranteed. That’s an over-used sounding phrase, but as you age you will recognize it to be correct. We’re a month away from 51 years married and we both feel so fortunate to have made it this far. There have been scares, but we are still here. As long as you’re enjoying what you do, keep doing it. You will not regret enjoying life and each other.

Happy anniversary, and happy birthday Jason 🎉. I remember the moment I went from “young” to “old”. Usual and habitual moment of having a drink with my mates in a loud pub, music blaring. I was 36 and exclaimed, “shall we go somewhere quieter so we can chat properly?” That was it, I’d turned the corner, and like my dad before me, started telling my son to turn the heating down, closing doors, and flushing toilets properly 😂

Nikki and Jason - Congrats on hitting the big 42. I just turned 70 a few weeks ago, and basically, had the same conversation with myself, as you guys did. I too, have always appeared to others to be about 10 years younger than I am, just as I had you guys pegged for about 32. I actually didn't like that until I hit 50 and looked 40, which was still a respectable enough age to not be considered 'a kid', regarding, well, grown-up things (business, contracts, etc). Finally, I got to sit at the 'adults' table, at holiday meals. I do often sit at the kid's table, even now, but just because a bunch a kids, are usually a lot more fun to sit and dine with, than a bunch of grown-ups. As with you guys (or so it appears), I too have been fortunate in basically, being healthy throughout it. I did have a ruptured appendix, a sports hernia and I passed a kidney stone once, but all of that was between my ages of 14 and 17, with no further issues, or kidney stones, since. I still have all my teeth, minus the two upper wisdom teeth, as I see my Dentist 3 times a year, and have done, for the last 30 years. I still have most of my hair (slightly thinning) and upon close inspection, I do have a few gray hairs on my head, barely noticeable, but with many more in my salt and pepper beard. I've never had stitches, but for surgeries, and I've only broken one bone in my life, an ankle, when I was 53. I have had a few spinal injuries, all sailing related, and with proper exercise, they are under control, and don't cause me any serious issues. To celebrate turning 70, and since it had been 20 years, I decided to (and did), find a recommended Doctor, to get a proper 'Annual' Physical. I passed with flying colors, as much as can be determined with that sort of physical, and blood work, but for one thing. The Doctor detected a slight heart murmur (that I've had since birth). All the Doctors I've been examined by before, who knew enough to notice it, have all said, at this point (being in the past), 'It's not a problem now, but it could become one, in the future'. I told this to my current Doctor, and he agreed with that, and altho he too, didn't see it as a problem of the 'now', and as I told him that I haven't experienced any problem with it, he said, 'Yeah, but you've never been 70 before, so let's take a look at it'. Once I had an idea of what was involved, to the surprise of everyone who knows me, including myself, I agreed to do it. Basically, I handed myself over to the medical profession, for an amazingly extended battery of tests. Oddly, to me, only requiring one needle, and all the while, no one ever wanted to see me naked, which I thought kinda odd. Am I that reprehensible? Where has my beauty gone? For whatever reason, the bill for this 'exam', of all exams, has totaled at least $30,000 (actually, a bit more), of which my co-pay is $0, for anything. Even the parking was free. All it cost me, was to give myself over, and the gas to get there. True. as I told them, I wouldn't do it any otherwise. That's just how it is. Having painted myself into this corner of giving advice, do as you're doing. Live, eat, work and play well. Pay attention to yourself, as I know you already do, and if you sense something wrong, and normal remedies don't cure it, go see a Doctor. Of course, as well, if extreme, get a second opinion, even if only WebMD. Remember, you hire Doctors for their expertise, for their skills, as well, for their insights and opinions. Not meant to say that you want them to make up your mind for you, which many Doctors, often suppose you do, but rather you should remind them, they are only the third opinion, at best. Keep on your toes, and your Doctor's toes, as well. Point being, after all the MRIs, CAT scans, and just plain old-fashioned X-rays, EKGs, Echo Cardiograms, and extraordinary blood work (with only one needle, I might add), they had thoroughly inspected my body, inside and out, upside and down, and wrote in their report, minute details, that only I would know. Stuff that gets by standard Doctors, in standard physicals, such as a slightly herniated naval (just another boat wound), being not obvious by sight. Nor was it a problem to me, other than I am aware of it, but, it was picked up on by them, and noted on, to my surprise. Thru this extensive physical exam, they had exact measurements of every opening and closing, every orifice of my body, being there some others more, that I never even knew I had. Basically, if I had any cancer or something other, brewing in me, it would have been picked up, which is why I agreed to go thru it, forget about the heart murmur. I feared they might either find my colon clogged by tumors or my liver and kidneys, fighting it out, the winner yet to be determined. I gave them (the medical profession), every chance in hell, to find something wrong with me, and other than for the heart murmur, and slightly herniated navel, they found nothing. I'd be lying, if I told you that did calm me, as I was convinced I was going to need open-heart surgery, if not open ass, more or worse. Sorry, I'm rambling. The point is, what you are experiencing now at 42, is going to continue to happen, hopefully, going forward. The idea of getting your Annual Physical more frequently than once every 20 years, is probably a good one, but what you guys are doing, in terms of physical exercise (as even just sleeping on a boat, is, but also), eating well, and not shooting too many Martinis, or heroin, is probably a good choice, barring a need of extreme prevarication. I'll shut up now, but PS - the snail footage was amazing

My daughter lived in Beijing for 6 years, teaching English. I went to visit her after she had been there for 12 months, and stayed with her in her apartment. One morning I asked her where something was in her kitchen, and she said, "I don't know, I never go in there." She lived an a good area of Beijing and there were restaurants/cafes everywhere, so her and her friends ate out every night. Re getting old. My daughter returned to New Zealand with end stage kidney failure. Because of her blood type, she needed a donor with O blood type. After a lot of tests and then the Covid pandemic, we finally had the operation. I was told that I was one on the healthiest 64 year olds they had seen in a long time. Two years later (beginning of this year), I had a massive heart attack (blood clot) that I was told I was very lucky to survive. Age/health wasn't really a factor, but it did make me realise that I am getting older. Not something I had really thought about before.

Happy Birthday, Jason! I appreciate Nikki’s moment of keeping it real and admitting that ya’ll don’t always follow everything by the book when it comes to preventative health care. Good health is often something that one takes for granted until you don’t have it. If anything I can convey, please pay attention to your heart health. My boyfriend died suddenly and unexpectedly at 41 from a medical emergency related to undiagnosed silent atherosclerosis. The heartache I would not wish on anyone. Please, for each other, make it a priority to stay on the planet as long as you can for each other. You owe this to each other and to this amazing life that you’ve built. 💜🙏 Sorry. I didn’t want to be “that person” but it is better to have the peace of mind of confirmation of good health. I wish you both the very best and many more happy years together.

Ah! My mother told me that “old age is no picnic”. But she was 97 at the time! But 42? You guys aren’t even half way there yet! I’m 76 and still rowing a single sculling boat (20 ft long, about 14” beam) and I still love to be on the water. I spotted the red double decker bus (just like the London ones) at about 28 minutes, and I can report that snails mating ritual is very similar here in suburban London although the little creatures look to be a bit smaller here. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do the same in Texas, provided they can find some damp place to live! I enjoy your videos and look forward to hearing your adventures for the next 42 years or as long as I’m still around to enjoy them. Keep ‘em coming! John

Then it hit me - holy shit I need reading glasses. I remember teasing my dad for holding his newspaper as far away as his arms could go, and then there I was doing the same thing with my phone. Happy birthday 🎉 it’s so funny you were talking about tea and being in a country that has some great tea! I was working in China for about five years and my wife and I got hooked on different green teas. I was bringing back small suitcases of tea for years!❤😎

Happy Birthday Jason and Happy Anniversary to you both! This video was so timely as my husband and I are going through the same type of moment. Married for 20 years and I'm 45 and my husband is approaching 50. It's a surreal feeling. You knew it would happen some day but you really don't know what you're going to feel like until it's already here. Be kind to your bodies! I wish I hadn't overdone those workouts in my 20s. I'm already seeing a knee and back doctor to deal with aging cartilage. Maybe start eating those chicken feet!! ❤😊 Xiamen is such a beautiful city, thank you so much for sharing it with us!

40 was a moment for me too. Every 10 yrs since is just 10 yrs. to me. Stop the worry and live life to your fullest. 40's are so young. No reason to panic. Your less tethered and thankfully have no control and control does not matter. Living your dreams do.

I've been watching you two since the pandemic lockdowns because I wanted to "get away" too (like a lot of people). And you've taken us on so many surprising adventures, I am always impressed and this episode is no exception. I've learned so much. Jason's face when he ate the hot spinach was priceless! And Nikki is so lovely! Forties look good on you both, but change is inevitable. You'll want to find/make a way to do self-traction or hang your spine whenever you throw your back out.

Happy Birthday and Anniversary to ya! My cousin and I were talking at her 50th B-day. We are the Old People in the family now. The look on her face, when that sunk in, was priceless. Jason, yes get the sticks, I'm 54 and used them this past week on a backpacking/fishing trip with my son. Was totally worth it. Thought it would be awkward, once you got into the rhythm of them it was great.

My heart fills with emotion watching you two. So many thoughts and feelings about my life at age almost 68. I have lived the other life, having children and raising a family and staying put in Iowa. In my younger years I wanted to build a Tahiti 2 sailboat and sail around the world. That will never happen so thanks for sharing all you two share. Happy birthday Jason. You are married to one of the world’s most beautiful women.

I've learned a lot and seen a lot watching your adventures over the past 7 years (yep, first video I saw was Nikki Goes Solo handling the RV alone). Never expected to see two snails enjoying each other....but hey why not! Cool visit with the boat and solar. Love that park and the surrounding area!! Don't forget my rule of birthdays, the Mom gets all the gifts so Jason, call your Mother!! Haha. Ok, Phuket it is! Until next week!!

You both "feel" younger than you say you are and that is a testament to your unwavering passion for curiosity and love, finding joy and new understanding in all you see, hear, and experience. I know YOU know this, but "maybe" some viewers don't. As a former woodworker I have worked with Chinese, and Vietnamese workers. The high end boats that are built in these countries have lower labor costs but also VERY SKILLED PEOPLE. You 2 are a joy to watch and listen to,"most" of the time.

The solar panels on the ship look like they're the flexiable solar panels. You guys have covered that type of solar panel now numerous times. I'm wondering, on your previous ship you also used them. How did they hold up? Do the newer versions hold up better now? I hear they degrade faster but it seems like yours still had good output. I do remember you had to replace them at least once that we know of. About how long would you say they last you? You had them on your old RV's as well but those were the old ones. Thanks!

Your picture of China is definitely not what I was expecting. Wandering around the shop is one thing, but walking around the city for meals and sightseeing is totally different. I must say that it is quite clean and doesn't appear to be as concentrated as I expected. I thought that it would be more crowded on the street.
