It'd be a shame to keep doing the same thing, right? The animus mechanisms change as the animus technology changes. Black Flag isn't animus-based at all, you're a playtester playing a videogame based on the genetic memories of an assassin. Origins and Odyssey both rely on portable high-powered animus tech that creates weird glitches, like fighting the Gods of Egypt.

Yes, the animus was improved and became more powerful, but I find it hard to believe that all of Greece can fit into the genetic memory of a single person. Like, did she go in every nook and cranny of Greece? Maybe they could have made it the amalgamation of genetic memories of people from different parts of Greece and explained it as such. Also, the point of the synchronization bar is that if you do something that is not in-synch with the ancestor, it will deplete the synchronization bar. That's why killing civilians and getting hit (yes, the ancestor is really good at fighting that he/she doesn't actually get hit) deplete it little by little and going to a place the ancestor never went to results in imminent desynchronization. And remember how the previous games are divided in chapters called Sequences, which represent fragments of genetic memory sequences? That's gone now. The newer AC games don't even feel like memories anymore. I liked AC Origins and AC Odyseey, but they just don't give you the feeling that you're in the animus. Even the modern part of the story feels unnecessary, unlike in the older games where the modern part is well-integrated in the story and it actually feels like it's the main plot and what you do in the animus is just a driving force for that plot.

i don't understand why people care about this kind of thing anyways. games usually need a couple updates (at least) to iron out the kinks after release, and I don't like waiting for DLC to come out once I've finished the main game, so I wait months or even years before playing

I never buy game at release. My backlog is too long anyway. By the time I get to them they are already half priced. 3 days late seems like nothing to me when I play games like 1 year after release when all the content is already avaliable.

And given what assassins creed is as a story about these two historical factions fighting throughout history, and the nature of japan as an isolationist warring state for hundreds of years, I can see how choosing a relatively famous "Samurai" who was also a part of one of the first Italian Jesuit missionary groups to reach Japan might play a role in the narrative.

Supporting ofa nobunaga is completely antithetical to what the assassin brotherhood stabds for and would more than likely be a templar thing. Should have set the game in the bakumatsu period, think about it. The shinsengumi existed back then, the era which foreigners were able to travel to japan, could put an unreccorded black guy in there if they wanted to as another protag while keeping a lot of people in there. And the cherry on top is that with ac being loose on history anyways, you could include a lot of cool behind the scenes stuff.

Btw the general who betrayed nobu specifically didn't kill yasuke after the final battle and specifically said he wasn't a real samurai and those of his hue were animals which shows he clearly had the qualifications he just wasn't accepted by alot because of his race.

Ghost of Tsushima (GoT) 2 will probably take us to mainland Japan and will blow AC Shadows out of the water. The one thing that AC games have always had going for them is their landscape and geography, even more so over GoT. But the story and gameplay of GoT is 10x better than most AC games and this will probably be true for GoT 2 while AC Shadows is mediocre at best with great landscape.

As much as I loved the AC games at first I was pretty broke back then and couldnt justify buying them as youd finish the story and basically be done with them but back then we still had video stores where you could just rent them, a week rental or 2 was usually enough to finish them. I felt it was perfect for them. I definitely miss those days even though now I have more games than I know what to do with

thats exactly what Ubisoft+ is, they usually give you a 6 hour trial to their newest games and sometimes even straight up add the full game. I think theres two different tiers you can get or that may be the EA service. Its exactly what youre talking about though, should look into it.

This. The fact is that Yasuke is really only remembered for being a fish out of water rather than anything he accomplished while in Japan. A Japanese man with the same history would have been long forgotten by now. I'm not against romanticizing the idea of him, or even producing works specifically about him, but he should not be upstaging a Japanese man in an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan. He would have been fine as a side character, or even a prominent character, just not one of the MCs.

Now you have Yasuke, a guy we know was a fish out of water and nothing else, hmmmmmm a fish out of water that seemingly disappears from the historical record sounds like the perfect building block for a character in a series about an ages long conflict between two shadow organizations that don't appear in historical record. You yourself said part of the appeal is historical immersion, what's more immersive than playing a character that we know just enough about to know they were real but enough mystery to fill in the blanks? You're right though, a big guy dressed in all Samurai armor will stick out and won't be stealthy. That's why they created a whole second protagonist that is literally a Shinobi and clearly displayed the Samurai being a melee focused non-stealth character. More than anything this comment and many like it just go to show how deep seated your racism and prejudice truly are. Simply the existence and centering ( even though it's still a shared protectionist role ) of a (real) black person to you is "pandering" and trying to push a message. Get over yourself and be better

Nah, that game is cool but Assassins Creed maps alone are worth seeing.

I loves Ghost of Tsushima for what it is, but AC has their own charms too. It's just fun running around historical places helping or causing mayhem!

The Samurai isn't stealth focused. The Shinobi is. Also black man doesn't automatically mean pandering. You said it yourself. Every AC game in the past had characters who were from the region the game was set in. So the FIRST time it's not like that and you're jumping to conclusions? That's not critical thinking. Not to mention future titles like AC Jade and AC Hexe have protagonists from the region the games are set in too.

William Adams was more than just a retainer. He was given the status of samurai and was further even given the title of Hatamoto. The only recorded title we have for Yasuke afaik is Kosho(小姓) which can be anything from page/servant to bodyguard to lover. Its plausible to assume he would be given the status of samurai as he was favored by Nobunaga and he did in-fact receive a stipend. It makes sense why Ubisoft would pick him for the protagonist slot, as they have a lot of creative freedom thanks to the lack of information. I think most of the issue stems from people over-exaggerating Yasukes historic significance. Some people say "legendary samurai" (absurd) so people counter that by saying "wasn't a samurai" (highly contentious)

At least yasuke is a real person but to my surprise, he was never historically a samurai. But it doesn't matter since the AC series is historical FICTION and im ok with that.

@@ColdFuego- I guess so but historical accuracy used to be very important to Ubisoft. Remember how they removed the Crossbow from AC1 because it wasn’t historically accurate? I don’t know what Ubisoft is doing nowadays but to each their own. I personally find it really tragic but thats just me.

Becoming a samurai was a super exclusive journey that took years of intense training starting from childhood, and Yasuke didn't go through that process in Japan. He served as a retainer and bodyguard to Oda Nobunaga, not a samurai. But since AC is a video game, im perfectly fine with yasuke being portrayed as a samurai

@@ColdFuego- the role of samurai wasn’t as exclusive as you might think basically anyone with enough influence/money/respect could claim themselves or others as samurai. And why yes there were people who were trained from childhood by their family to take the mantel there was also Vassals like Yazuke who were given the title of Samurai from lords who held them in great regard. It’s also worthwhile to mention that Samurai were not all created equal. A Samurai born into an influential family and trained from childhood would have more respect than a vassal who adopted a lords name and was granted the title later in life.

If it's like Odyssey, I'm not buying it. EASILY my least favorite AC game with the WORST story (That family dinner scene at the end.... Beyond cringe. I'm going to wrestle my psychopath sister, like we've been together for all time? Weird. Just weird.)

It’s a video game. I’m pretty sure that people weren’t fighting spirits in Egypt, but we had some of those in Origins. I don’t care that much about how historically accurate these games are. I also would like a game more historically grounded and based in Japan, like we have Kingdom Come, but Assassins Creed will never be that historically grounded game.

Well to be fair. It makes sense why they went this route. All the protags are usually 100% fictional. They like using a character that has little to no records about them to shape them into whoever they want. They can’t use someone who had a lot of history writin about them. Though I agree Yasuke made more sense as a side character, maybe make him the Leonardo Di Vinci of this game (the best friend of the MC)

He was never a Samauri, was used as a novelty "Hey look at black skin!" never battled but once because he was being attacked, and was instantly sold too someone else who offered a large sum of money losing all the titles and the house he was Supposedly "Given".

People will get a lot more from reading the articles than watching the trailer. The people who watch a cinematic trailer like this and comment on how amazing it looks compared to another game that is already out really confuse me. People just need to wait and actually see the game before making big comments, regardless of whether those comments are positive or negative.

That is an insane take. You can do that with any other AC game. "If you take out the assassinations, there's nothing Assassin's Creed about black flag" And before you say "that's not the same thing, that's a key gameplay system" Naoe is the players way to engage with those systems in this game

Theres nothing about him that indicates hes an assassin. No hood, no blade, no Assassin logo even on him, no mention of the creed, no brotherhood, and even his target has no Templar logo. It doesnt need all of those but it should have some to make him feel like hes an Assassin. No your thing isnt the same because you escalated it to the whole game. Im just talking about the problem with this trailer and the current presentation of this character.
