UPDATED VIDEO SERIES! • So you want to study B...
Everything you need to know about doing a degree in biochemistry from someone who’s doing it….me!
Hey guys,
Bit of a long description box today but basically want to make it as easy as possible for you all to find what you want to get from this video (which I hope was helpful/interesting)
Naturally I know I’ve only done one year of the degree but hey if you don't like the sound of year one you probably won’t like any of it!
I tried to cram it all in to these sections:
STRUCTURE (labs lectures contact hours etc) 2:58
CONTENT (modules) 8:46
EXAMS/FREE TIME/“HOMEWORK” ETC 10:55
Modules: www.bath.ac.uk/catalogues/2018...
If I missed anything apologies but please feel free to ask me anything you want to know and hopefully I can answer from experience!
Love you loads and sorry for being too busy to upload for a while
Noo xx

Amen! Same applies for Biomed :D There's tons of overlap with Biochem/Biotech. Classes like Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Genetic Engineering... Can't write down a full Krebs cycle myself anymore, but then again, haven't come across situations were I needed to. Perhaps the essence is more to remember how different macromolecules enter in different cycles, and how much ATP is generated. Ow, and then there's signal transduction pathways also, haha. Damn you, JAK/STAT :D

I recently discovered this video while researching university topics to look into, I came across Biochemistry, and really wanted a rundown on what it was all about and this really helps a lot 😎 I am 25 years old, from America who's never been to a college or uni, but despite an interest in Biochem, I've been studying languages, and linguistics on my own for the last 5 years, but career wise, I have been looking into something that is challenging and involved in the sciences to help the general public. Lastly, this video was very informative and I appreciate your enthusiasm, thank you from the US 🙌🏻

Going to graduate this spring with a BS in biochem and a minor in chemistry . All I can say is keep an open mind on your final major, you’ll be exposed to a lot of different sciences and math. If something piques your interest, I suggest you take a class or two to explore it. The further along you go into biochemistry, the tighter your schedule becomes and you’ll get less opportunity to switch over to something you might like more. Feel free to shoot me any questions if you have any!

In HS so far I've taken AP Physics 1 and am currently taking AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Calc AB so I've had some exposure to other sciences. Were there any sciences that you took that made you consider switching your major?

@@mzapcupcake4294 Thats a great science and math base to start off! A few classes that I personally loved: Molecular Genetics- protein-protein interaction is the basis of biochemistry, and seeing that play out at a macro scale is really fun. Physical Chemistry- This one is just my professor making it super fun to learn. If chemistry shows the why of molecule-molecule interaction, P-Chem shows the how. Wine Appreciation: Yes it’s a real course. Honestly I spend so much time building up hard skills, my soft skills need a bit of a flex too

I studied biochemistry at Cardiff University (BSc 1987; PhD 1991). My bachelor's degree involved equal proportions of biochemistry, chemistry and microbiology in year one, half-and-half biochemistry and chemistry in year two, and biochemistry only (with an elective) in year three. In my experience, the days (other than Wednesday afternoons) were filled with lectures, tutorials and labs., with evenings reviewing the day's lecture notes and completing assignments. My advice would be to make thorough notes, memorize the metabolic pathways (and understand what they mean) and work consistently. Don't rely on 'cramming' and you should be fine!

I don't know how it is in Foreign Schools, but labs in the United states schools (at least from my observation) get progressively more awesome, assuming u love science stuffs xD. I keep doubting what degree to do at university 😭 I want to do something biology/chemistry related but I don’t know which specific degree to do. My favourite A-Level is probably Chemistry, but I don’t know if that’s just because of the subject or because I really like the teachers, and vice versa, I don’t know how much I like biology or if it’s just the teachers that I sometimes find difficult (they are lovely but sometimes go very much off topic and it’s quite frustrating lol). I’ve been reading A is for Arsenic by Kathryn Harkup and I find this book really interesting (it talks about different poisons and the way they interact with the body and why they kill etc). I did the Chemistry Olympiad and found that really fun to do as well. My favourite topic in biology is biological molecules, talking about protein structure, polysaccharides, lipids etc, and I also enjoyed the DNA part and enzymes. But I also really enjoy chemistry, I can’t decide what degree to do. I want to do something that combines both and kind of has both equally but I don’t know :( if anyone watching has any tips that would be great!

( I'm not much of a public commenter but here I go! ) You see I love theories and using ur head to figure things out ( even though I usually fail at stuff like that I enjoy them ) and like science and biodiversity in general. I didn't do much research in the field itself but after we did some random formulas in class i cried. It was so confusing and I didn't quite understand it tbh... I was wondering if the field itself is mostly based on confusing formulas and less hands on work like looking at a organism and specimens through a microscope. Is there specific types of biochemists that specialize in different things? This is a old video so I doubt you'll reply but if anybody in the comments could I would really appreciate that!

Hey, welcome to comments haha! I would say it’s definitely a mix, it’s hard to say for sure as all the areas are different and I’ve never worked full time in a lab! I have a whole PS video if you check that out :) but basically show yourself off, but don't put irrelevant things from when you were younger than about 15, and back up everything you do eg dance with why that helps you be a good applicant 😘

There's a rare chance I might get a response because I'm watching this video a year later 😂. But I had some questions. Basically it's summer for me and I gotta decide the course I wanna do most so I can write up my personal statement and apply when I get back to college. Im stuck and I don't have a clue what to do. I was wanting to do optometry but my Predicted Grades say otherwise and with University of Manchester I can get into Biochemistry. So like is it worth going into? I've read some forums (they're from 7 yrs ago which I'm skeptical about) but like some people said that a biochemistry won't be able to get you a job and all that stuff like it maybe hard to get a job. Like I was interested in biochemistry just not looked at it that much. Basically , is it worth going into? Do universities help in getting a job with research or whatever?
@NooStenningVideos
@NooStenningVideos 4 жыл бұрын
+Master Chief hi, you will get a reply haha! Biochemistry is very well renowned for being broad enough that you can get quite a few jobs from it- especially from a good uni like Manchester! They absolutely help you getting a job, for example at Bath they also recommend you do a placement year which gives you work experience and potentially the opportunity for a job there when you graduate. Obviously optometry has a clear job path unlike biochem but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of jobs especially in research. If you love small scale molecular biology etc you’ll enjoy your degree and I’m sure find a job you want to do :)
