Ovechkin was selected for the All Star game but declined to participate so he could rest for the last stretch of the season. He was suspended one game after the All Star break by the NHL for his decision.
@angelabernhardt6761
@angelabernhardt6761 4 жыл бұрын
It’s worth pointing out that the NHL suspends any player who elects to skip the All Star Game if they are voted in to play. They have to sit out the game before the All Star break or the one immediately after. Kind of a lame rule if a player would rather rest their body to be in good form for their own team but I guess they have to have some leverage to get players to the All Star game. 🤷‍♀️

Michael not a suspension. A suspension results in the player to not get paid in the game(s) that they are suspended for but in the case of this situation the player who opts out of the all star game still gets paid for the game that they are (technically suspended) I forget the word for it though

The stick hits the ice first to load up the flex on the stick which essentially whips the puck at faster rate when it leaves the stick blade. Pretty much all players use a composite stick which is made from carbon fibre or kevlar which makes the stick light and strong to handle the flex. The stick flexes with pretty much every type of shot (wrist, snap, and slap) and there are different levels of flex per stick depending on player preference and the length of the stick.

What's cool about Pettersson being in the Hardest Shot competition is that it's not common for forwards to even be selected for that competition (obviously he's not the first). Normally it's defenseman. But given he was probably the youngest and lightest player in that group, coming in third is impressive.

The reason that oven chicken wasnt there is that he doesnt want to go. He was picked but he opted out of going and subsequently got a 1 game suspension. And the reason that they hit the ice before the puck is that it allows the stick to flex and build potential energy and once they hit the puck all of their energy goes into the puck making a harder shot (hope that helps)

Weber's shot is so hard that it went through the netting in Vancouver 2010 against Germany. Nobody noticed but Marty Brodeur, the spare goalie on the bench, and they got it reviewed at the next stoppage and there was no hole in the netting but a scorch mark at the mesh where it went through. So the material stretched then contracted with the puck's passage.

Hey Adam, Al MacInnis was known for having the hardest shot in the NHL. He won the hardest shot competition seven times between 1991 and 2003, He was unique in that he used a wooden stick when everyone else was transitioning away from wood. He held the record with 100.4 for a while. They brought him out as an homage to him since they were in St Louis, where he played. They showed 100.4 to be nice, he didn't actually hit it that hard there. Just for show.

As a teenager, I shot with a pro flex of 112 which is very stiff (knew the equipment manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning). When I got to my second year of midgets (17 years old) I had a shot in the mid 90's in miles per hour. The thing I always practiced was my body placement on the shot. The puck in the middle of my stance and hitting the ice about 1 foot behind the puck. This causes the stick to flex and then the stick rebounds forward like a rubber band as you drive the stick forward through the puck. This is where most of the power comes from. One thing that helped me, was the hundreds of pucks in would shoot every day in concrete. So, when I hit 12 years old, I was way ahead in taking slap shots than everybody else. It is by far the most feared shot but also the least accurate. But, I scored a lot of goals with my slap shot.

NHL hockey sticks now are made of carbon fiber and fiberglass, which makes the sticks bend more when the players do a slapshot so the stick has a lot of power when it flicks back into place. That's why players now have much faster shots because the wooden sticks didn't bend, like the old clip of the guy who shot the puck at 90 MPH vs today when he shot it at 100 MPH. That was all to do with the new sticks flexibility vs the old wooden ones that didn't have any. the only downside to the new sticks is that they break a lot easier than the wooden ones did. So in an NHL game today you might see an average of one or two broken sticks per game, but in the time of wooden sticks you didn't really see any.
@camcincott5529

Yes. They are using the "flex" on the stick to sling shot it by bending it. different players use different strength sticks to flex more or less. if the stick has too much flex, it is too whippy and a bigger guy might break it trying to slap shot it.

So when taking a slap shot, the power of the shot comes from “loading” the stick with elastic potential energy over a relatively long amount of time so that when the puck is released off the stick, the stored potential energy is converted to kinetic energy that is released over a much shorter time than it took to load that energy. This is accomplished by striking the stick down on the ice before hitting the puck.

Have the sticks improved over time? Better materials, more elasticity/flex to allow for more power, or are there rules about construction standards?
@TopCheese79
@TopCheese79 4 жыл бұрын
@@x9H05Tx The materials have improved and changed over time. Originally sticks were made from wood and depending on the wood used it could effect the flex of the stick. Then for a short while metal sticks were used but it was quickly noticed that metal had very little to no give and so it didn't last long. If i'm not mistaken, Gretzky played with a metal stick for a short period. Now the gold standard for a hockey stick is a composite of carbon-fiber, resin and anything else the manufacturer adds to try to make their stick stand out from the competition. Currently there are no rules to my knowledge that prohibit any material being used in a stick however there are rules on the geometry and length of the stick. The only player currently allowed to "break" one of these rules is Zdeno Chara (zDEHN-oh CHAH-rah). He is allowed a stick that is longer than the regulation due to his height of 206cm/6'9". Some current innovations in the making of the sticks include things such as cutting holes in the blade to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics and grip on the puck. Or there is a stick made by a company called COLT that coats the bottom portion of their sticks in many layers of nano sized particles of a nickel-cobalt alloy to improve strength, power and durability. Hopefully this answers your question and wasn't far too long!

@@TopCheese79 thanks for the info, that took some typing haha. I'm just getting interested in hockey, used to play rugby so I started out watching hits but I'm more amazed by the control these guys have. Still spend 90% of the time wondering where the Puck is at the moment. I was curious whether the shots were faster because of better equipment or better/stronger players, I guess it's a bit of both.
@TopCheese79
@TopCheese79 4 жыл бұрын
@@x9H05Tx It is definitely a combination of both the player and the stick. In the hardest shot competition the players will often intentionally use a higher flex stick than they would while playing a game so they have a faster shot. (the flex of a stick is a number that describes how difficult it is to bend the stick. the number is how many pounds of force it takes to deflect the middle of the stick by 1 inch.) If you want to learn and understand hockey then I would recommend actually going to watch games live in person. It is so much easier to keep track of what is going on and where things are. As well, if you're ever confused about what is happening during the game you can just ask someone around you who does know and they would likely explain it to you. If you have any other questions I would be happy to try to help.

@@TopCheese79 Yeah I'm sure it would be a lot easier in person, problem is I live in the UK. We do have lower level teams out here but not near me, the only rink nearby got shut down years ago. I guess Cardiff probably has a team, that would be the closest but still a long drive. Its difficult to follow any American/Canadian sports over here unless you can stay up til 4am watching games, fights are even worse haha. Appreciate the advice though, thanks.

To answer your question about hitting the ice before contacting the puck with the stick: new technology and construction components on hockey sticks allows them the flex much deeper than before, without breaking. So they almost become slingshots, hitting the ice brakes the forward momentum of the blade, but the players' arm power will force the shaft onward, flexing the stick. So when it releases and whips forward, it adds whiplash to the already huge forces acting on the puck. Main reason why players these days average 90mph shots, instead of 70mph like they did in the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's

Here is a fun fact that I know because I did martial arts that includes knife work. The average human reaction time is 0.25 seconds, which means that an object that is thrown at around 75mph will hit a target 25ft away before the average human can process it coming at them. This means that a puck shot at 105.9mph is moving so quickly that a goalie's grain won't even have time to process the shot before it hits the goal if the shot is fired from within 12m (around 40ft). In short, don't take your eyes off the puck, even if there is a fight going on next to you, or you simply will have no chance to defend yourself.

The slapshot uses the flex of the stick to create power. They hit the blade on the ice just before the puck to create that flex. When they hit the puck, all that stored energy releases which create hard shots like these.

The top 11 Hardest Shot records are all held by either Shea Weber or Zdeno Chara. Recently, though, Martin Frk of the AHL (The league which is a tier below the NHL) shot a 109.2 mph slapshot which surpassed even Chara's all time NHL record. Insane guys.

Remember levers from maths class. Not all hockey sticks are as stiff as Shea Weber's, he uses an insane stiffness stick, so when you see his stick bend, I want to assure you that to get it to bed, you need over 100 pounds of force; and to get as much bend as he does, you're probably requiring nearly 200 pounds of force. The elastic nature of the stick under pressure will cause it to act like a spring, and launch the puck faster than his backswing was. If he were to hit it clean, he'd only be hitting it as hard as his backswing was, minus the drag of the stick moving through the atmosphere. No way he'd be able to break 106 mph this way. I hope this helps.
@GoreMyst09
@GoreMyst09 4 жыл бұрын
When you bend a hockey stick, you store elastic energy in it. If you glance the ice so that the stick bends as you “pick up the puck,” and then springs back from the bend as you release the puck off the blade, you get more kinetic energy transferred to the puck than just hitting the puck clean.

Honestly you explained it pretty correctly lol, hit the ice before so that, as you can see by the replays, the stick bends, building up tension that basically "slingshots" the puck, giving it a lot more power
@elikabo
@elikabo 4 жыл бұрын
Your description of the stick flexing was kinda right. When they make hockey stick there is a number on the stick that let the buyer know how much this stick will flex, or how rigid it is. 77, 87, 97, 107 are the typical numbers for men. The heavier you are, the harder your shot means you should have a higher number. In the case of Weber, he might have a 120 flex and he is still able to bend that thing which explains the power of his shots. When it bends, the stick has the effect of a slingshot. The more it bends the faster release and more power, but Shea Weber would not be able to play with a 77 flex because he would break the stick every single time he takes a shot.

The reason players want to make contact with the ice first is so the stick bends or “flexes” which allows the stick to snap back and hit the puck even harder

The stick hits the ice first to pre-flex it. If you watch the slow Mo replays, you can see the stick bending. Once it contacts the puck, the stick will flex a little more. Then the stick will straighten out instantly, causing the puck to travel faster than the player can actually swing it. Sticks have flex ratings on them and players pick what's most suitable for them.

4 things for ya and your power board. 1: Macinnis used a wooden stick and broke 100mph 2: If the shot misses the net, it doesn't count. 3: The puck is stationary. A moving puck will travel faster. 4: An AHL player for the Reign, Frk may have set a world record @109.2mph.

You strike the ice slightly behind the puck(on a slapshot). That flexes the stick and loads the energy and of course that transfers the power to the puck. The sticks all have different stiffnesses and flex points depending on strength and preferences of the players. It would be interesting for players like Al McInnis and Al Iafrate to be in their prime and playing with the stick technology of today.

He also has a broken Jaw from the Stanley Cup Finals last year that he needs more surgery for. The Jaw was broken from a hard shot deflected into his lower jaw.
