Nick Drossos conducted a self defense social experiment, challenging a big guy to punch him in the face. Footwork is key here, as well as keeping your hands up.

I don't know that he's had any formal training, you may be expecting a higher standard but I think he was just some guy Nick found on the street. Though I take your point, he wasn't exactly going for the kill.

I don't see how this is a social experiment. When I saw the title of the video I thought he was going to go around town asking random people to punch him in the face for no reason and if they didn't, he'd insult them and see if they do then.

***** Me? Why? I have no intention to find out if people will hit me on command. You totally misunderstood my point, I thought THIS video would be like that, I didn't WANT it to be, I THOUGHT it would be. You see, the term social experiment usually means testing how random people react to unusual situations.

to make this a tad bit more realistic, he should have gloves on as well, and striking. that way, he has to commit to punching, making himself a bit more vulnerable than just dodging and using his footwork. i think this will take it to the next level educationally. great job nick :)

do that with someone that actually looks like they can fight. let them use very thin gloves with padding only on the knuckles (ufc gloves, etc), this is bullshit and means nothing. You go against an out of shape buffoon, real fighters enhance their skills by always challenging yourself. We all know this was far from a challenge, more like a joke.

Since this "self defense" video does not take into account that some people may have mobility issues (such as from illness or injury), nor does it do much good for someone who is elderly and may no longer have that kind of speed and timing, this is the first video from you I actually had to thumbs down. Your self defense video need to be more inclusive for everyone regardless of their physical ability. Sorry but I have to be honest.
@ajs6036
@ajs6036 8 жыл бұрын
Wtf? This is basic self defense and foot work. An elderly man regardless of any self defense training will not be able to defend himself against a large attacker. If you can't move you better be ready to throw punches or look for takedowns. Better yet stay out of danger in the first place. Your comment gives absolutely no substance to this video.
@rsine100
@rsine100 8 жыл бұрын
No you're completely missing my point. Basic self defense should work for everyone regardless of one's own physical ability. If you think self defense relies on you being faster and having better foot work than your attacker, then what will happen when you reach 75 or 80 years of age? You really think you will be faster and more agile against someone in their 30's and in their prime? I doubt it. And of course you could be in the best shape of your life right now. You could be working out diligently in the gym for hours every day but shit can still happen. You could become badly injured in an accident or come down with an illness that severely limits your mobility and if all you have going for you is speed and timing in your self defense training then you will come off badly disadvantaged at some point. For example, look at Muhammad Ali. In his prime he had strength, speed, and timing. He was one of the best in the fight profession, however, Parkinson's disease and old age have taking those abilities away from him.
@ajs6036
@ajs6036 8 жыл бұрын
+rsine100 Once again, you missed the point of this video. Just because he has very flashy technique and looks the part of a fighter doesn't mean you cannot utilize these tactics. Not every single technique of self defense could be applied to small women, the elderly, and disabled. That's not realistic in the slightest. I assume you have never trained in combat sports before so I'm going to break it down very simply for you. If you have a large attacker, using nicks tips, you must create distance no matter which way you can. Extend your arms, your legs and block to avoid being struck. He has SO many videos explaining different scenarios and techniques one could use to defund him/herself. This is one of them. You don't even need to strike an attacker. If you can get away you can tire him out. That's the point. If it doesn't apply to you because you are elderly then go onto another video where the situation does apply to you. Again, your comment does not offer any substance to the video.
@ajs6036
@ajs6036 8 жыл бұрын
+rsine100 and you want to talk about those with disabilities able to defend themselves? My grandmother has Parkinson's. She can barely walk and falls if she tries to open the door on her own. There is no way self defense in any way shape or form will help her in any situation. A man with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair with no movement will again be helpless in an attacker situation. Your logic behind self defense is very much so flawed. You disliked the video for no reason when he is giving very sound advice and technique. Step in a boxing gym or a MMA gym and start learning something about combat then maybe you'll understand the core concepts.
