So far in the realm of social psychology we've examined the power of situation and framing, as well as the manner in which we view ourselves. Now let's take a look at how we view other people. How is society built upon the ways that we interact, and trust that other people will behave?

7:35 I saw a study that showed as we get older, we tend to marry people closer to ourselves in the demographics mentioned (height, IQ, education level, religion, age, fitness etc.). 18 year olds are the most likely to marry someone very different and the slope of the graph drops (imagine "very different" is high on y-axis, perfectly similar is zero on y-axis; time (age) on x-axis) until age 65. At age 65 there is a big spike, then it goes back down. Can anyone guess why? It's not because people suddenly become more open-minded or most desperate to marry anyone around age 65. You'll never guess... Researchers found it's because couples who are very different wait for their (disapproving) parents to pass away before getting married (!)

it could also be because of the difference in generation because people from older generations tend to be more conservative, traditional, and practical while the younger generation tend to be more adventurous. I dont have any proof or data about this. it's just a little theory i have

Hi Dave, I am new here; Just ran across your channel. I live in Nebraska; and I have not found any one to explain to me how you find sea level or above sea level in Nebraska? Before computers, How did they do it?? Or do you have a video on this. I did not see one.

Minute Physics kinda did a video on this. Before computers, lots of manual math and equations. Interestingly, before we had computers, we had computers, people who computed. But what did they do before that? Probably not something they concerned themselves with. They knew the local water table, rivers etc. That was the relevant information.

I have a question for professor Dave. Can you do a video explaining the mechanics of extracting and of how difficult it would be to harvest the energy created by clouds? Currently it is not possible to build a lightning rod to bait lightning strikes to power our homes. I do not believe we have the capacitor and heat sink tech to channel that much energy that quickly. So the thought experiment for your video is how feasible would harvesting static electricity from clouds to power our homes be? The mechanics involved and barring the impossible, how a science fiction environment might channel the energy of lightning strikes to power the grid. This has been my stupid suggestions to never be heard again. Have a great week and God bless you and your family.

Hey Dave, what do you think of people that say psychology isn't a "real science"? I hear this from people that cite the ongoing replication crisis in psychological research, but they'll go as far as to say all of psychology is bullshit, which doesn't seem accurate to me.

They are fools. It's technically a social science but also highly empirical.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains yeah my long time buddy was telling me this and I was pretty skeptical of it. He was saying that because the founders of psychology were "sketchy", for some reason that meant all of it was just bunk in his mind.

Just because Freud did cocaine and slept with his patients doesn’t mean that everything he said is invalid. Anyone who pretends the behavior of a scientist is reflective of the validity of their science is an idiot.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains so far it seems to me that this topic should be a subject for discussion.Even the definition of science itself is not yet standardized, so it is impossible to say with certainty whether psychology is a science.Psychology has both empirically proven and rather far-fetched sections.I think , over time , psychology will strive for greater science
@myself2noone

I could understand why. The replication crisis did push a lot of bad ideas, but these things tend to be self correcting in time. The larger issue is it's one of the fields of science with very little diversity between the sexes. No doubt your friend is a man and it can be hard to take psychology seriously when it commonly seems to treat men as if they're defective women. A reversal of the past but no less true. Psychology really needs to try and get more male perspectives. Because unlike a heavy math related field it kind of dose matter. A bridge works, or doesn't, regardless of the sex of who designed it. You're understanding of other people will be different based on your sex however.
