Ohhh interesting. Yes there definitely is an overwhelming amount of information out there that says you have a small window to get all that socialising done. This makes a lot more sense and seems a more calm attitude to it. Thank you again for this.

Very good advice this, my cocker was extremely confident, outgoing and independent as a puppy and I made the mistake of socialising her everywhere with lots of dogs, people and situations when I should have kept her more 'blinkered' to the big wide world and concentrated more on play, engagement and training instead. We are getting there now after nearly 2 years but it's been much harder work than it should have been!

Couldn't agree more, theres a fine balance and it's correct evaluation of the dog and the situation. Loved seeing the boys, never seen them other than as mewling and puking baby!

Great, video. *Technical Difficulties * 😂 And what sweet lads! This makes me feel better about my sometimes chaotic, noisy house with nephews and people popping over. My 18 month cocker takes it in her stride mostly, but is a little nervous with new people. I guess each encounter is a learning curve. Thanks again, I always look forward to your vids. 😊

How do you approach a dog that’s at the other end of the spectrum where they’ll run off to other people and dogs when they’re nearby? She’s only six months mind you and our approach has been to correct the moment she looks in their direction.

Thanks for your video; informative as always! Do you have thoughts on "socialization" in the sense of the gundog meeting other dogs? How much contact should a dog (living alone in a family setting) have with other dogs, and when these encounters happen, how do I keep control over him?

Thanks for another great video! I've been following your training and having a great deal of success with my cocker. How do I get him to pay less attention to smells and sniffs and more attention on me for training? Thanks!

As a total newbie dog owner I would take my overconfident dog to the dog park where the common wisdom was that we were all there so that our dogs could ‘socialise’ with the other dogs. 🤦‍♀️

My 12month old cocker loves everything and every one but How do I go about this when we are out as soon as she sees another dog or human being she feels the need to run over and will ignore me. Perfect recall when it’s just us.

So my problem is that my cocker doesn’t object to saying hello to other dogs but he just wants a quick sniff and then to carry on his way. I think this is normal for a 2.5 year old dog. He strongly objects to large dogs running fast at him particularly if they are male. He gives out a few warning growls and if they ignore him then there is a fight. Usually it’s a dog walker with about six dogs in tow. I think this is a fear thing as he has been attacked before when he was younger and maybe also because he’s a small dog? But I would like to avoid these sorts of situations. He also really detests the flat faced (brachycephalic) dogs. I have been told this isn’t uncommon as dogs don’t recognise them as other dogs. Is this true? Anyway how do I stop any fighting? You’ve had my dog and you said there were no scuffles when he was with you so any tips would be helpful please.

I've got a Fox Red Lab who has just turned 2 and she is anxious whenever I have taken her to a park, so I generally just take her to a paddock and her walking to heel is improving etc. but am I damaging her by not persisting with trying to take her to a park? Hope that makes sense!

For me, socialisation isn't about letting your dog run up to anyone/any dog to "say hello" or play. It's about teaching your dog to be calm in any place or situation you find yoursel in and to look to you for further instruction.

I find most dogs are under socialised and don’t know how to greet and/or play. Owners are happy to let their dogs chase my dog down and growl aggressively and try to nip as they catch her up. But I constantly hear, oh, they’re only playing. 🙄. Well mannered and safe play is reciprocal where they take turns to chase with plenty of soft bouncing between each other.
