Full and color version of the concert that Soft Machine gave on 1/15/1971 at Theater 140, Brussels, Belgium.
The quality of the video was increased by me up to 1080p. The formation of that presentation is the most remembered and for me the best of Soft Machine:
Robert Wyatt (drums), Mike Ratledge (keyboards), Elton Dean (sax and keyboards) and Hugh Hopper (bass)
1. Improvisation 2:44
2. Neo-Caliban Grides 8:53
3. Out-Bloody-Rageous 17:31
4. Kings and Queens 26:45
5. Teeth 42:10
6. Pigling Bland 51:27
7. Esther's Nose Job (excerpt) 53:44
8. '...It's nothing' 56:17
9. Mousetrap 56:52
10. Noisette 1:01:47

Without doubt, the best jazz, rock, prog wtf they were ever to exist in the universe. I have been listening, playing along on various instruments for 50 years, And the brass work on this...No-one can do it like these lads. Thanks. Ten thousand times, thanks.

Excellent video of Soft Machine in concert. I must say, Mike Ratledge is for me, the driving force of the S.M. I never tire of listening to him play that fuzz tone organ. Hat's off to this, my favorite incarnation of the band.

È esatto. Ratledge è stato la forza trainante ("driving force") dal 1969 al 1972, dopo ha perso interesse per la musica, infatti dopo il 1973 non ha più composto materiale, lasciando i SM nelle mani di Karl Jenkins.

Perhaps it's because they were British, and a bunch of pasty White Dudes, but Soft Machine did not receive the respect and accolades they deserved! True...there were some Amazing Jazz-Rock units beginning at this time - after the dissolution of Miles Davis's peerless Quintet, and his "Bitches Brew" Project: Herbie Hancock's "Sextant", Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return to Forever - but from what I can see and hear in this live video - Soft Machine more than held their own! I think what is astonishing here is - How fucking GREAT a drummer Robert Wyatt was before his terrible accident! Elton Dean, and Mike Ratledge are obviously virtuosic, but Wyatt is the Engine, and Centrifugal Force holding it all Together! I love ALL of Robert's work post Soft Machine, as well.

I think you’re partly right about their “image” hurting them. Of course, the bands you mentioned had the benefit of containing ex-Miles musicians, guys whose names and reputations were more widely known.

Soft Machine is equally as important as Miles davis in the creation of fusion, they were releasing their important records right around the same time but i think that Soft Machine was ahead of Miles since they were playing their (then) unreleased repetoire live quite a long while before it got released.

@@yhwhrevength622 You are just ignorant. Jazz rock is what they used to call fusion. I know because I was there.I'm 63 and saw many of those bands at the time. Also we had a subscription to Downbeat Magazine. That is what it was called. It had electric and psychedelic elements of rock and the advanced structural, melodic and harmonic aspects of jazz. You are clearly young and arrogant and mostly wrong. PS I have a Bachelors degree in Performance (percussion, drum set) so i have the academic backing as well. Have a nice day,

@@jedwing you are wright .I was there too (65) and also a musician. The term "Jazz Rock" was used for Jazz Musicians using Rockdrums and setups with electric instruments/Amps. Best known example would be Miles Davis Bitches Brew. The Elitist Jazz people hated him. "Fusion" didnt exist back then, thats a term of stupid Music journalists. Rock-Jazz was used for Bands like Colosseum, Chicago, Flock, Blood Sweat and Tears, when only some Jazz Phrases were in the songs and maybe Horn players were in the Band. These Bands were commercially successful. Big difference. Fusion is something from the 80s when all the "originality" was already gone. Everything after the 80s (MIDI was invented) is a copy of some earlier ideas, and from then the whole music culture went down fast.

Thank you so much for uploading! ; this is a superb piece of musical history. What an amazing band! Mike Ratledge was an underrated player in my opinion. If it wasn’t for his use of fuzz organ (inspired by Hendrix’s advice while they toured with him), then we wouldn’t have had the same tonalities produced by the likes of Hatfield, Egg and National Health. I also think Ratledge is a mystified character and it fascinates me how he just left the group and abandoned any attachment to Soft Machine since the late 70s. A magical group!
