Bro Soft pastel can actually blend easily but than it is tough to maintain because it's sleepy and oil pastel are good because they take time to blend but it texture comes correctly.. BTW they both are different types of pastel and they both have their own masterpieces.. N u should blend it with paper or tissue paper not with ur finger ( just an advise ) Edit : thanks for so many likes ...and agreeing with me ☺️

When I started out, I blended with my finger, and in a matter of days my finger was raw and blistered. You should use a cotton cloth, tissue paper however is harder to blend with

Well in order to blend oil pastel we should neither use finger nor cotton etc.. That's a wrong concept of 90% beginner artist For blending oil pastel we should overlap oil pastel until they blend.. if smoothening is required then we should use white oil pastel. Yes, for some cases we can use clean finger, but its just 1-2% in a painting.

Becoz it's just same as like chalk where as oil pastels have waxed texture it's their nature there is nothing like that it's loosing pigmentation if u will merge the oil pastels properly it will also leave pigmentation.....

You can take a pencil with rubber end, remove the rubber and flatten the remaining metal part, then scrape your oil pastel with that, and add layers like that Using drawing paper rather than copy paper helps as well

I have tried various methods to blend oil pastels, with tissue, with cotton, fingers, etc. All showed almost same results. Those oil pastels aren't upto the mark. Actually the one available in India 'camlin oil pastels' which is used in this video isn't that great. But if you see other countries oil pastels, they blend even with a cotton swab that too way better than soft pastels. So both soft pastels and oil pastels show great blending. It's just that the oil pastels available in Indian market aren't that good so we see problems in blending them.

If you want oil pastel to blend well then sit in a hot weather. And if you want to make a painting with oil pastel during winters then sit in front of a heater then the oil pastel will mix so easily that you will just love oil pastels

A S Astha Samridhi obviously there is a difference. There supposed to be different even with soft pastels there are hard medium soft and extra soft variations. However, kinda wish this person used some linseed oil to blend the oil pastels. The suggestion that one is better then the other is subjective here. Especially since the medium wasn’t used very well imo but hey if you have the $$$ to spend by all means. Better technique could’ve saved a ton of the sticks.

Soft pastels blend easily but also breaks and messes up easily . Nowadays I'm using oil pastel camlin too but I don't have that much shades but I love it .....it gives realistic look.

You need to use an oil or solvent for easy mixing of oil pastels. You can't use your finger to blend oil pastels. Oil pastels are a wonderful material and have several advantages over soft pastels if used correctly. It is a pity that before comparing these materials, you did not study their properties and techniques for their use.

Oil pastels are oil paint mixed with bees wax. The inexpensive ones used here aren't the best example of what can be achieved. Also, you can use soft wax and any of the oils and thinners you use with oil paints for blending and other effects.

There's something about soft pastels that breaks me from inside....the chalky feel and the sound it makes on paper....even looking at the soft pastel makes me go *squeals* and I feel very rough....you get me? But then it's also a very good medium. I'd probably buy pastel pencils in future

Yaa absolutely I do drawings with soft pastels and oil pastels both but I like oil pastels , soft pastels Are pigmented but if touch the panting it becomes light and makes Messi that's why I like oil pastels they are dark and awesome colours

Bro Soft pastels can be good but at oil pastels if it take time to blend it then its fine but bro let me give you one advice you soft pastels blend easily with finger but oil pastels you have to blend it with paper (just an advice) you should know about it Edit: thanks for agreeing my comment

Listen, if you can afford the good quality oil pastels, they're amazing. The ones in this video are cheap and for kids. If you can't afford to save up for the more expensive oil pastels, I wouldn't bother with them for now. There's a HUGE quality drop in oil pastels the cheaper you go. You don't really see that as much with chalk/soft pastels because the chalk pastels are more or less decent in most price ranges. If you want to use pastels but don't have much money, try chalk pastels. They're a great medium and look wonderful. And if you can afford to save up for oils, then try them out- it's so worth it. It feels like holding luxury in your hands and making art out of silk. Not to mention you can do sgraffito in oil, which looks wonderful.

it may be the quality of oil pastels you have because oil pastel are quite easy to blend, or it may be the technique u use, make sure that there is barely any white and when blending make sure to add pressure and blend from light to dark. If it's down to the quality add baby oil, dont forget there are some oil pastels that dont blend

Sometimes I use the soft and sometimes I use the oil it all depends on what I'm working on but I can say that I kind of favor the soft .

I don't know why I said this but i have both of these. ( Camlin ) 50 shades of oil pastels and 36 of soft pastels. In my opinion, both of these have their own style of art but soft pastels blend more smooth easily while some pressure is needed for oil pastels.

Hi... Just a small advice... For the blending , the blue one U took time to blend the blue color which is made of soft pastel , so that it would look perfect... But u didnt take time to blend the blue color which is made of oil pastel , and it didnt look perfect... This is my advice to blend them so that it can look perfect... Oil pastels are blended through without the use of finger, swab etc. but with doing the right strokes with the pastel itself continuously until the blending looks smooth to the eye. That is why the shading result of oil pastel is uneven on the paper.

The main way to blend oil pastel is tissue paper or ear bud..not..by using finger..🙄

Wow soft pastels are amazing from the starting of my art journey I used oil pastels and they just don't mix easily you need lot of effort, my finger used to become red and hot ,from now on I am going to use soft pastels though they are slippery but better than oil pastels

TIP FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOW QUALITY OIL PASTELS: (comment may not make complete sense as it answered someones question) You can use baby oil, most people do. However, you can easily blend oil pastels with your finger or a tool and it come out beautiful, people normally add oil because the pastels they have are of low quality and dont blend well or to create a paint like texture, changing the texture of the art. adding oil to oil pastels change the texture and create a paint like texture that helps to create smooth transitions, blending making the pastel look like paint. But if you get a good quality oil pastel blending will be smooth and easy. quick tip: to blend oil pastels you need to add pressure, you cant just swipe, ensure that there is barely any paper showing and blend from light to dark, for detailed blending I would recommend using your finger or a cotton bud, but for larger scale blending I recommend using a cotton pad, tissue paper (kitchen tissue quality) or even you finger if in a pickle . hope this helps. Although informative it seems the person in this video had bad quality oil pastels and lack the knowledge of how to blend oil pastels, but they did a good job !
