Hi, I just purchased a Lelit Kate and its on its way, can you tell me is there a numerical value, we are shooting for on water softness? I owned a Capresso Ultima, now own a Gaggia Titanium and its is very rare it ask to be de-scaled. My assumption is because our water in my city is literally glacier water and is only at 63 PPM. I know back east where you are its much higher so just curious.

Hey Jim! I have got Lelit Bianca V3 - in my water tank I have got Lelit 70l filter with hose. Do I need a separate Oscar Pack to put inside the tank? Or shall I replace Lelit 70l filter with v725? Please let me know what do you think :) thanks in advance

Java Jim, the Lelit Bianca comes with a bigger filter. Since it is bigger than the filter you are showing in the video, can the recharging interval be longer than 2 weeks?

Hi! My Elektra comes with a built in softener… is that enough? Or do I need an additional softener? Do I just use regular tap water with the built in softener ?

I'm new in the espresso machine industry. Do I still need another type of water softener for my water to go thru before it enters my machine? Or are these two types of products alone good enough? I haven't bought my machine yet so not sure what my hoses will look like. Thank you

If I have a water softener equipment for the whole house and use filtered water from my fridge can I ditch the Lelit filter for the water tank ? Logic almost tells me that I could since I’m already putting soft water in the tank but you never know with espresso machines.

Hello Java Jim, Recently I bought the BWT Penguin water filter jug. It exchanges calcium with magnesium. Its recommended as a way to reduce scaling. However, now I am totally confused! As I understand (or misunderstanding) your message is that The BWT Water Filter is harmful to the machine as it causes scaling due to magnesium. Is this correct? It would be great if someone could help before I throw out my BWT Filter. 😒😒

Recently received one, installed it on a Mrs. Silvia V6. It may be doing its job, however after using it for 24 hours I removed it for two reasons. It doesn't fit correctly on the intake tube IMHO. It changed the characteristics of the machines pump which probably translated to brew characteristics. Again my IMHO.

Thanks for this video. When you remove filter from salty water and run tap water to remove calcium/magnesium, how long do you have to run water? I changed one Lelit 35L filter already when it reached liter limit, the color of the resins were yellowish instead white as it was new. I not recharged that one, but used for about a month. When I removed the filter, I noticed the surface of plastic and the hose were somehow sticky-gunkish, so I cleaned thoroughly. I pour Brita Maxtra+ filtered water to the water tank where Lelit filter is installed, guess is double protection... I tested Maxtra+ filtering abilities with a test strip and I was pleasantly surprised the effect it gave (unfiltered became 3 red squares from 4 green, filtered remained all 4 green).

You need calsium and magnezyum for the good shot of espresso. I don't get it. Without minerals in water, you get sour and underextracted shots..

I dont understand. If the magnesium is bad, why bwt bestmax premium filter add Mg to the water? Most of people say Mg is good for better Espresso. Most of coffeeshop use ion exhanger to add mg to their water.
@TimtheWinzard
@TimtheWinzard 4 жыл бұрын
It's a chemistry thing. Around 50-110ppm is the range you'll want for magnesium+calcium in the water. Less calcium than magnesium is needed for scale building. So ion exchange filters try to remove or replace most of the calcium to leave the water around 75ppm with more magnesium than calcium. If you remove too much of those ions(
@Marrow452
@Marrow452 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimtheWinzard There's really nothing about that that is correct. You need less Magnesium for scaling to occur than Calcium. It's the value of hardness "as CaCO3" along with the alkalinity "as CaCO3" from bicarbonates that determine scaling potential at a specific temperature. In terms of volume of scale Magnesuim scale may be less than Calcium scale, but not by weight. You also will not see corrosion because of a lack of hardness but because of acidity from dissolved carbon dioxide, so it is important for water to have sufficient alkalinity to stop it from being aggressive. You can have alkalinity without hardness by adding sodium or potassium bicarbonate to distilled water. If you have very high alkalinity and low hardness you will see scale forming just as you will with very high hardness and lower alkalinity, so you can't look at 'minerals' as ppm and determine scaling or corrosion potential. You can also see corrosion due to other things in the water such as chloride and sulfate.

i could be way way way wrong here, but isn't this all kind of the same concept/principle as cation exchange capabilities in soil? (note im a math guy, not chem, so im not retarded, just ignorant lol)

Can i use the oscar if i my reservoir has a hose?
@kaypee1972
@kaypee1972 2 жыл бұрын
Yes sure. But it needs its time to soften. I would do as Joe recommends: put the Oscar in a pitcher with water and this in a fridge. Fill up your tank with this water after it has softened (depending on your water, the Oscar might need up to 24 hours to soften your water. And you need to be aware, that a two hours softened water is totally different than a 24 hour softened water so not easy to have consistent water quality

RO removes the minerals can it be used instead of using a water softener?
@Marrow452
@Marrow452 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but you need to remineralise to an alkalinity around 40-50mg/l to stop it being too aggressive. You can use sodium and potassium bicarbonate to do that and you wouldn't have to worry about scale. Add hardness (Magnesium or Calcium) by adding things like epsom salts and calcium chloride and you increase the risk of corrosion (from chloride and sulfate) and also risk scaling in a service boiler (mineral content can obviously be controlled much more easily in a brew boiler). "Softened water" is a meaningless term not specific enough to be useful advice. You can have very hard water with high alkalinity e.g. 250mg/l and 'soften it' by exchanging most calcium and magnesium ions for sodium, but you'll still get scaling because of the extremely high alkalinity and some remaining hardness, and your espresso will taste like crap too.

The easiest solution I've found is to mix distilled water with some Potassium or Sodium bicarbonate. You never have to worry about scale this way.
