Many people felt my initial review of the Lasfit LED H11 replacement bulbs was unfair because my headlights were aimed too high. Admittedly, that never crossed my mind as I had never had an issue with my headlights before...no one ever flashed their hi-beams at me, nor had anyone ever suggested anything was wrong with my headlights. They were simply as they had always been from the time I bought the car 2½ years ago.
Anyway, as so many viewers felt my headlights were aimed incorrectly to begin with and/or suggested that LEDs should always be aimed down a bit compared to the halogens they're replacing, I have re-aimed my headlights and retested the LEDs. The results were indeed different...have a look to find out what changed.

Thanks for redoing your test, I wondered about aim. Both my daughter and I have 2012 Subaru Forester's, both the same color as yours. About a year or so ago, she switched her halogens out for LED's. For some unknown reason, her Forester kept burning them out and she's had to replace them several times. I was debating whether or not to make the switch, but since she was having to change her bulbs so much, I decided it wasn't worth it and kept my halogens. Regarding your engine cleanliness...You were reading my mind. Just as I was thinking how yours looked, you mentioned "no need to comment on how dirty your engine is". My daughter's looks more like yours, she laughs at mine, because mine still looks showroom clean and my Forester has only been on a dirt road once since new! She thinks it's funny that I'm always out there cleaning it inside and out. Thanks again, from your test, I'll stick with my halogens too.

Thanks for taking the time to post this! Someone may have already mentioned this, but I believe the passenger side headlamp is supposed to be aimed an inch or so higher than the driver side. The driver side is aimed a bit lower to prevent blinding oncoming drivers.

Yeah, a few people have mentioned that. Thing is, I just got so raked over the coals on my first video by people saying the passenger side light was pointing too high and skewing the LED test. So second time around I wanted to be sure no one could say any glare from the LEDs was due to being aimed high. :-) Now that I've got my halogens re-installed, I'll tweak that passenger side back up a bit. Thanks for watching!

I think the initial review was spot-on and this one was great as well! Nice! You did your research for headlight aiming! Sweet! Great job! My opinion (before watching) - Putting a LED into a reflective-based halogen headlamp *is* a bad idea. It *always* blinds other drivers as it is a flood and not a directed beam. It wasn't what it was designed and a bad retro-fit. If you want better lighting, get a car designed with better lighting done right with all the engineering and laws built into it. Just to add. Theres some differences with led headlight bulbs. There is a ton of info and testing on a channel called headlight revolution. The difference with some led bulbs is that where the actual led chips are mounted on the bulb. Distance into the housing and orientation ake a big difference on how the light is output. Glare vs retaining oem beam pattern reducing glare or having a more even light flood. Love your videos man. Very professional ✌

Awesome followup! And for that, subbed! For what you have, I would bet that just putting in a set of Silverstar Ultras or the high end Osram bulbs, would be a far better result. I put a set of Silverstar Ultras in my wife's 2010 CRV and they were a massive upgrade over the still stock Honda bulbs that were in it. And yes, and I think I might have mentioned this in the comment in the other video, it seems, when you watch all of the different controlled test videos from the major aftermarket sellers, it really is down to the right bulb for the right reflector housing. I have my high beam Morimoto 2Stroke 2.0s in the mail so it will be interesting to see the throw difference as the GenX Civics use reflectors for the highs and projectors for the lows. With Morimotos in the lows now, things are great. I hope it will be more of the same.

Great review. Thanks for going thru all the steps that internet commenters suggested. Its worth noting that there is NO SUCH THING as a DOT approved LED upgrade bulb for standard headlights (high beam and fogs differ). Even going from HID to LED is risky and puts you on the wrong side of the law if an officer decides to look too closely. Bummer that on most subarus, the high beam is used at a low power as a DRL, so the high beam LED upgrade isn't an option for us (running at a lower power, the LED still shines just as bright). Drive safe out there everyone!

Hello Softroadingthewest thanks for the review hope more light switchers watch your review👍. Well I have been swapping from good old halogen to HID and now LED for different vehicle. Here is my two cents suggestion is to do another test (Take 3) and try what I did was adjust them few times higher/lower till no one from on coming traffic flashing you and high enough for your preference then decide whether to keep them on or not reason is it seems too low for your last adjustment . Also I prefer pass. side to be slightly higher for pedestrian and intersection left turner to see you earlier. Last advice if you carry a lot in the back with rear passengers headlights need to aim lower I guess you know why 😊

Thank you, excellent videos! I watched both of your interesting videos on halogen vs. LED replacement headlights. Last year I did this to my 2008 RAV4 that we bought new and never replaced the original halogens. I read that after ten years halogen light output can degrade to 50% of original and I definitely felt I couldn't see as well as I should. Especially after we got a new Camry with LED headlights. So I got replacement LEDs for the old RAV4. I did check the alignment of halogens first and it seemed fine. The LEDs seemed about right with no change in alignment so I went out for a drive. It was amazing how much better I could see! Over the year I've never had an oncoming driver flash their brights at me so it must be acceptable to them. It would be interesting to try fresh halogens to see if they are noticeably brighter than my 16 year old ones but honestly I could never go back to halogens now. You mentioned how good LEDs would be for backup lights and that is true because last year I upgraded the Camry to LED backups and I was shocked how much better they were and how much better the backup camera performed with the LEDs installed. I'm gradually replacing the halogens in both cars.

softroadingthewest, you are so fracking conscientious! I love it! Keep up the awesome work! We need more objectivity and impartiality in this world! What happens for many people is that they see the bright hot spots and will claim that the LED lights are brighter and therefore automatically illuminate better. As you've pointed out, that's not always the case. Blinding hot spots in fact make seeing in the dark worse. I also don't like the very blue tint of LED lighting. You actually need neutral white LEDs to have a color temp of around 3500k - 4500K that will allow for better color rendition as perceived by the human eye. The super 'bright' white / bluish LEDs with color temps of 5500k - 7000k does produce more light output but we actually lose some ability to distinguish details because the color rendition is off. I wish auto manufacturers would use neutral white LEDs instead of cool white LEDs. We just purchased a new 2020 Acura RDX and the standard LED lighting that comes with it is super bluish in color. I'm sure it's 6500k to 7000k. It's super bright but color rendition is way off so I don't really feel it's helping me see better in the dark.
@oewii
@oewii 4 жыл бұрын
Bad Color rendition is the result of low CRI of cheap LEDs, not the color temp of the lights. The human eye is able to perceive colors fairly accurately through a wide range of colors temps. Sunlight is what is natural for us. And sunlight varies from around 2000 kelvin at sunrise to 12000 for blue sky. Average midday daylight is about 5600 kelvin. Color rendering index (CRI) is the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of objects faithfully in comparison to an ideal or natural light source. So... regardless of the color temperature of the light source, the CRI value is the indicator of how faithfully we see colors. With all that being said, your stock tungsten headlights will reproduce colors more accurately than LEDs at any color temp because tungsten has a continuous light spectrum as does natural daylight. The best LEDs aren’t there yet and are very expensive. Brightness is a different measurement altogether. Most tungsten headlights are in the 1350 lumen range. You will see many LED headlight conversion manufacturers claim ultra high lumen output to entice customers to buy their headlights. Most fall very short of those output claims.

I wanted to replace all my lights, inside and out, with LEDs. One reason was to avoid running my battery down. I do a lot of solo trekking, and that's the last problem I want to be faced with. I replaced most of the bulbs, but not the ones on the front. There were just too many unknowns - admittedly I didn't even know all the right questions. So glad I held off. Your videos have been excellent. I think I'll let my 2016 XT halogens alone. I don't want brighter lights. I don't like when other cars blind me, and I don't want to be a hypocrite. I just wanted lower power consumption. In fact, I often turn my lights off to avoid blinding other people or animals. Of course, on Subarus, you can't turn all your lights off when the engine is running and you're in gear. There's always a super-low light that's always on. This is enough to drive through campgrounds. The problem then becomes my super-bright, blinding dash lights and screen. Then I have to throw towels, shirts, etc across my dash. It's all a work in progress.

One of my cars I love the leds because they work well with that head light but haven’t bothered with my second car as the housing is much smaller and from experience that’s what causes issues with the hotspots. Plus side to Halogen's is that in cold climates, they melt snow & ice of the headlights, where as led's can run too cool and you eventually lose the usefulness of the lights. (Having to stop and scrape them off to see. Has happened to us a couple of times in the Midwest.)

Good to see you did your due diligence and made a second vdo...it is a good vdo, but what most ppl don't realize generally, are LEDs just need three steps if using a reflector housing...1)a reflector housing w/a bulb shield(yes, not all have them, and LEDs should NOT be used w/out them) 2)making sure the LED bulbs are pointed east and west 3)realigning the beam as simply as using a compact car in front of you 25ft away, using the tail lights as a cut off point(more real world than a wall)...the U.S. is always behind when it comes to tech so the bulb shield wasn't really standard here until 2011...but it was utilized here on foreign vehicles as early as 2007(some a couple years earlier)...but the point of the bulb shield is to cap the bulb(filament or LED) to mute the light source, to not only prevent glare to oncoming traffic, but to help "aim" the light up and back to reflect the light down and forward(bulb shield is usually slightly angled downward)...I couldn't tell in either vdo if your vehicle had them or not, but w/out them, halogens are preferred...and projector lights aren't perfect...many times I've been distracted by "bouncing" projectors both behind and in front of me...and to me, that's more distracting than a consistent glare, bcuz a brief flash doesn't allow your eyes to adjust quickly enough, like a camera flash(seeing spots is the main reason why I use driving glasses)...but this is definitely a more thorough vdo overall...appreciate it.

Great video. Good due diligence. A quick fix. What would a movie lighting crew do? They'd put the light where you want it, and then they'd 'fix' the problem (oncoming drivers). They'd raise your LEDs up to the best height for you the driver. So too high. Then they'd put opaque strips of tape across the the front of the lens to 'cut' the intensity of the light shining into oncoming drivers' eyes. The way to accomplish this would be to have someone sit in a car in the oncoming position. (Distance? I'd be guessing. How far were drivers when they flashed you?) Back at your car you'd take a strip of opaque tape-- I'd start with 1/4", raise and lower it until your 'oncoming' driver told you it was 'better'. Variations would be of course 1/2", etc... but also consider two 1/4" strips with some separation. Then of course how is this now affecting your distance lighting? Based on my lighting experience, I'll bet you could 'fix' the problem in a useful way, more light, farther, but not blinding on coming drivers. I can see your point about the LEDs making it harder to see further. What your eyes do, is adjust to the overall intensity. The very bright LED foreground steepens the contrast. Your pupils closing down a bit for that hot spot which causes the background to appear darker. (If you did this comparison again, you might put a camera on your eyes and see what your pupils are doing.) Some points. I'm in my 60s. What I didn't realize when I was in my 20s is that as we age glare becomes increasingly serious. (When I worked movies, older drivers would complain about movie light spill that shined into their eyes.) Second point, the LEDs being brighter and bluer are all other things equal, better. However, pointed up to eliminate the bright spot right in front of your car, better for the lights--but bad for oncoming drivers. The solution is they need to be 'snooted' or 'grided'. Snoots are black tubes lights shine down, the black tubes 'cut' the spill. A snooted light at 32"can never shine in any other driver's eyes. Grids do the same thing. Of course you can't do this to your headlamps. (Maybe the grids, but it would be DIY, but then they'd get as full of dust as your engine). So this solution will have to come in LED headlamp design. Which is what the projector headlight reflector designs are doing. Third point. Rack lights for off road driving: the brighter the light, the farther down the road you want to point it. You want to avoid the 'hot spot' right in front of your vehicle--that diminishes your seeing.

I'm glad I didn't comment on your first video because I would also have just repeated the "re-aim" response you already got to your concern about glare and other driver's safety. I have a 2003 Forester that I replaced the high/low combination beams with LEDs and despite the fractured beam pattern (from the halogen reflector) and the fact that I had to re-aim them, I won't go back to halogens. The benefits of better color rendering and more light forward helps me to see better at night when oncoming traffic is glaring in my eyes, whether if it's from tall trucks or other people who don't give a rip about their headlight aim. LEDs are still fairly young in the auto market and I believe eventually they will come out with LED upgrades that will work better with existing halogen reflectors.

I think Automobile manufacturers adjust the passenger side headlight at a level higher than the driver side headlight because you can see the road margin even if you are blinded by the oncoming vehicle lights. I have noticed that pretty much all the cars/vans/trucks have this difference in allignment from factory. The fact is that once light travels to a certain distance both the beams merge and gives out a uniform pattern.

That could be, a few people have mentioned that. I just got so repeatedly scolded on my other video for that headlight being aimed too high that I didn't want to take any chances this time around, so no one could say the glare is because it was aimed too high. :-)

When I first bought my brand new 2019 Honda Passport, it came with the head lights aimed way up high (I can’t believe it came like this initially). It took me many attempts to find the perfect angle and now I’m super happy. I 100% prefer my oem Honda LED lighting vs. the Halogen lighting in my 2015 Forester XT. Love your honesty. Have you tried increasing the aim height of the driver side led bulb by a half inch so that the main beam will focus much farther on the road away from you while still remaining in the recommended aim height; and also increasing the aim height of the bulb on the passenger side so you could maximize the benefit of a brighter source of light on the side of the road you are traveling on? This might be a happy compromise between your need for a brighter beam while being considerate with other drivers' vision and following the law. Take 3, perhaps? Anyway, that was a great review done on actual oncoming traffic.

Oh I am *done* with messing around with headlamp replacements, haha. From all of my research, no matter how you adjust them, they will never truly interact properly with a reflector designed for a halogen bulb...there's just not any compelling reason to force the issue. To be honest, I seriously regretted taking this whole thing on. I was a much smaller channel at the time, it was the very first time a company had reached out to me with a product to review, and I was excited and flattered. Ultimately this is not entirely relevant to the content of my channel, and I have no desire to go back down this particular road, so to speak. :-) I'm happy with my mildly upgraded halogen bulbs, and the times I actually need more light (i.e. on the trail at night) I have ample auxiliary lighting. :-)

First sorry couldn't help it. I had hell with my led swap on my suburban. I clocked the bulbs different and adjusted them but they still didn't distribute the light well. They were bright. Yours definitely looked better than mine. Maybe try some high quality halogen bulbs just for comparison.

I just watched both of your reviews. I'd come to the same conclusions honestly after doing lots of research. I really wanted to find LEDs that wouldn't be problematic in my 2000 CR-V, and ultimately came to the conclusion that it just wasn't happening. That being said, the halogens in my CR-V always sucked. I ended up buying projector based housings from eBay. (The seller is CrazyTheGod, and I'd definitely recommend them! High quality, and they make headlights for a LOT of different cars.) They came with HIDs, which have most of the same problems as LEDs when put in reflector housings. But being in projector housings, they work super well. Expensive? Yeah. But I'm very happy with them. That being said, they're not without trade-offs. Where I can see, it's much brighter and more visible. However, you have to consider that reflectors reflect light everywhere, with the vast majority of it being reflected low where it can illuminate the road and not blind other drivers. (With the proper bulbs.) But there is still light that bleeds around and illuminates everything else. With halogens, this isn't bright enough to be a problem, and works favorably for the driver. With LEDs or HIDs, it is too bright and causes glare. Projector lenses, however, have a very clean cut-off as there is a shutter that physically blocks the light from going above the cut-off line. This is what allows you to use bright lights such as LEDs and HIDs safely. However, it also means that above that cut-off there is basically no light. So this actually produces lower visibility than halogens in reflectors above that line while producing superior illumination than halogens in reflectors below that line. Turning on the high beams uses a solenoid to quickly remove the shutter creating amazing illumination! So overall, I'm really happy to have made the switch to projectors with HIDs, but as with most things, it's a trade-off. For me, it was worth it. For others it might not be.

good one . there is a lot of factors . the LED light temperature, should be around 5500 Kelvins for the brightest light, which is white, if you go higher, you reach into blue , and below for yelowish . but it sll boils down to personal preference and feel . which should be based on security and not cosmetics and popular beliefs .

I would agree with this application. Just does not look right. I think LED's in a driving light location (low) would be beneficial. They would be low enough not to make a hot spot plus in most cases are only on with high beams. Thanks for taking all that time to make things right. Beyond and above the call of duty at this point. If you do decide to upgrade to higher wattage halogen bulbs, make sure to run a relay kit. Bulbs get connected directly to the battery and you use the OE bulb wiring to turn the relay on/off....more power gets to the bulbs

Something to remember, the reflector optics in your headlight housing was designed for incandescent bulbs. replacing with an LED replacement changes the way the light is reflected / projected towards the front line of sight. having to aim an LED light down should/would be a giveaway that something is not correct.

Actually I'm no expert but I think the passenger light is aimed a little higher because it should illuminate the side of the road and with the proper reflector pattern should not blind oncoming traffic. I do agree though that reflectors for halogen bulbs require a very special LED bulb that emits a similar pattern of light (all around). The lights I have in my Jeep are designed projector LED lights and those have problems too because projector lights tend to be blinding. I've adjusted my lights down, particularly after lifting the vehicle and I've yet have to have anyone flash his lights at me. If I use high beams however I seriously doubt oncoming traffic has any chance at seeing anything because to me that looks like it's day outside. That said, I do think that one has to exchange the entire light to use LEDs properly. Headlights are not a simple flashlight with a conical reflector. They're designed to project the source of light properly onto the street and if you change the source you need to change the pattern of reflection to end up at a proper result. Just brighter isn't necessarily better.

It's mostly all about light color (temperature) when wanting to see more detail. Halogens can't produce a kelvin temperature that emulates daylight (5k-7k Kelvin) like LEDs. Like installing a 5,000k led light bulb in your closet. You'll be able to see the true color of your clothing without having to take a garment to a window for natural light to see if it's blue or black.
@-Yurkey

There's also the fact that warmer temperature of color relaxes the eyes while the colder the temp the more your eyes strain and so you feel like you actually see less or struggle to see objects on the road... Use modern phones as a quick reference for the "whats easier on the eyes" theory. What happens when you activate your "eye comfort" mode on your phone? The screen gets a yellow tint over it so the eyes strain less...Warmer colors simply go better with our eyes, in fog rain and snow it is highly recommended to have yellow light sources and some Japanese cars come with yellow tinted fogs, Osram has their fog line of halogens with a distinct yellow tint. Also, that's why your OEM LED are more like 4300k instead of the 6000k that the aftermarket ones are. But there's a Chernobyl type of reason why most aftermarket LEDs are around 6000-6500k in color = it's cheaper that way 😂. LEDs come off the conveyor belt with a noticeable dark blue color of light so yellow phosphor needs to be added to whitten the light they emit... The more phosphor they add the less profit they get 🤮... I'm sticking to halogens, probably get myself a pair of Bosch Gigalight 120 plus (I've seen only good reviews about them). Btw thanks for the video I almost bought a pair of LEDs 😂

It only means that your reflectors are not set correctly. They are supposed to be set at the same height, the left one is also suppossed to be aimed to the right ( if you drive on the right ) so that the hot spots from both reflectors meet at about75 meters ahead.

The biggest issue with LEDs in halogen reflectors is distance from the point of emission to the reflector. Halogen bulbs have a specific distance from the reflector to the filament. This is why you had to adjust the angle when using the LEDs. The distance on them is wrong. There are manufacturers making halogen replacement LEDs with the correct distance.

Based on your first review I immediately went out and swapped out my halogens for LEDs. Why? Because my halogens were so bad it was dangerous for me to drive at night. Now I can see and after 3,000 miles of night driving, I’ve never been flashed once. BTW, my lights were aimed properly with the old halogens. I decided to go LED instead of aiming the halogens upward.

Ya, but how many led bulb buyers are going to lower their headlights? This is why I want annual vehicle inspections (not emissions), just function/safety inspections. How many cars have clouded headlights AND led bulbs? How many cars have 1 (ONE) functioning brake light? How many ppl have 1 functioning low beam AND use their high beams to make up the difference? Have many cars have dangling exhausts that are held by 1 hanger? Safety instructions; they should be mandatory.
