Whenever anything electric starts with a surge is when things go pop. A light bulb is a basic example of this. Easing into the start of just about anything mechanical prolongs the life of the product.

SAFETY TIP - any one install this should be very careful of the existing capacitors ... they will have a charge on them that will shock you EVEN WITH THE POWER OFF. Getting shocked by the capacitor wouldn't kill most people but it could cause you to fall of the RV roof or cut your self when you react to the shock .... so be very careful. Using insulated electrical tool would help ... like Klein tools.

I would like to add a couple things. First with the soft starts installed, when the compressor cycles on it is a lot quieter. The rumble and banging around is nearly eliminated. Thats a plus even with a generator! Second, some people think a hard start kit does the same thing as a soft start for a fraction of the cost but, it doesn't. A hard start kit actually pulls a lot more amps on startup to get that compressor motor going. FYI, I have soft starts in both A/C units and I'm very pleased with their performance. Thanks for the great video!

It may have already been said but....if you have a backup generator on your home, this is a big help in those situations as well! Like you said, the compressor starting quieter at night lessons it waking me up on those nights it wants to cycle often.

You're correct in saying this isn't new. The appliance and HVAC industry have been making soft start units for decades. Supco has a few models, probably all under $50.00 on Amazon. I've had mine since I purchased the motorhome. The fan motor makes more noise than the compressor, great upgrade as well as a sequencer so the AC units don't all start at once.

Thanks for a good video on the soft starts. Me and my wife was just talking about adding them to our a/c’s to be able to run on a generator. We live in Louisiana and summer coming on is hurricane season. So storm prep was on our mind and they would be a big help if we had an extended stay in our rv. Love your guys videos, keep up the good work, and say hi to Daisy for us. God bless.

Don't forget that installing a soft start COULD, void your warranty. I think they should be included from the factory. But you know how that goes. After 27 years at the phone company, I install all my wires face down. It creates a drip loop, because water finds a way. Nice video.

A lot of older quality A/C units already have boost start capacitor circuits built-in from the factory. My Penguin IIs have them already. Opening the control panel, I see two round cylinders (capacitors). If you see the same, then you probably already have a start capacitor.

I don't need a soft start for issues with my generator but I hate the loud brrrrr noise when the AC cycles on during starting .... also as an electrical engineer, I know the in-rush current is hard on the motor, capacitors, etc so I believe using the soft start will extend the life of the compressor motors ... and eliminate the cycling start noise. so good to do regardless if you can afford it

Last year we had an AC go out on our 3 year old RV. Luckily it was replaced under an extended warranty. I had previously installed an easystart by MicroAir. on that AC I was able to remove the easystart from the damaged AC and installed it on the new AC. and it still worked So, my easystart outlasted it's first installation and is on it's second. Meanwhile we are able to run a 12,500 BTUH AC, a 15,000 BTUH, and a residential fridge on a 30 amp pedestal or from a 3,500 watt inverter generator. All thanks to the easystarts installed on both AC's.

We installed them on 2 of our 3 ACs. We have a 4500/3700 watt GenSet and when we boondocked while we could run 2 of the 3 on the gen, if we had much else on, when they fired up the genset struggled and sometimes we had a reset or breaker trip. After these were installed, when they come on ,we can have normal low power things running and the genset handles it fine.

Use the micro-air version on my 15k btu Coleman. Allows me to run my camper in my 2200 watt Yamaha inverter. What it also allows is at a 30amp Rv park there is no issues when your AC, water heater, fridge and battery charger are on the breakers don’t pop. With ours the Compressor LRA went from 47 amps to 14 amps. The micro-air version has a Bluetooth function which is cool to watch the reduction and amp usage. Great video as always. There are times when only 30A sites are available and this should really help. Once I ordered the units, I realized your AC unit in the video is exactly the same as our units so your demonstration took away any apprehension with installation. It's so gratifying to see the results immediately. One warning to others, the adhesive on the back of the box holds VERY well. You really get once chance to position. As stated, very easy to install. Great information on soft start. Future goal to look at your remote access from your internet video. We experienced an excessive power draw after being off grid when applying our generator. The Victron Mutliplus convertor was charging our batteries when we turned or attepted to turn it on. The may have been other parasitic power draws like tv's, laptop chargers and our fridge in auto mode. Hopefully with this new soft start we can comfortably continue without concerns of overloading.

Never thought of a soft start fir the AC's... hummm. Good video & explaination. I use soft starters and VFDs (Veritable Frequency Drives) in automation on many applications. The VFDs can ramp the motor up to speed as well as very the speed. Soft starters just ramp up the RPMs of a motor slower. Especially 300+ hp motors.

Hey Chad, another great video, just installed these in our AC units. Watching your videos, I see you repeatedly mention Fridge issues, we battled our Norcold 1210 mainly due to improper positioning and venting which we could never get resolved. I tried all the usual tips and tricks with minimal results. We didn’t want to go to a residential so I installed a JC refrigeration HVAC conversion in our Norcold and love it. We have 36 degree fridge temps and 1 degree freezer temp in 100+ weather. I highly recommend checking into them, you would love it.

@@GunsmithLC JC Refrigeration has made the better quality absorption cooling units for years. The have also come out with the HVAC compressor replacement cooling unit that is a direct swap on the back of Dometic and Norcold fridges. They can install or you can do it yourself, I removed our fridge and did it on the RV floor in about 2 hours and put the fridge back in, it basically converted our a Norcold into a Residential fridge and works great. @@GunsmithLC I went back and forth on that, according to JC, the 12v is more efficient but the compressor runs longer than the 120v to cool the same amount so they pretty much are equal in power usage. The only thing is the draw that an inverter might consume being on. Since we already had a good sized battery bank and our inverter is always on, I went with the 120v as recommended by JC. We now have the Multiplus II inverter and a 1120ah lithium battery bank.

We started using Softstart with our first travel trailer. We bought it to help protect the compressor. When we bought our fifth wheel, it came with two AC units. Again, we only used them for saving wear on the compressor. Well we started boondocking and tailgating. I knew our generator would run one AC but was excited when we found out it would run both of them. We use a Champion 3500 dual fuel and get right at 18 hours on a 20lbs propane tank. Where these things really shine is in the summer. We stayed at Duvall's in the Smokey's and the 50 amp connection had an issue. the 30 amp was fine. If we had not had the softstart installed. we could not have run both AC units. In the southeast this is not an option. It is way too hot and humid for an RV to cool off with one AC, especially if you have pets. Great video and the install is as easy as you make it look.

Hi Chad and Tara. You guys are great. We have been watching Changing Lanes on KZfaq for 2 years. We have learned a ton of great stuff from your videos, and are subscribed, but never signed up for a give away. But, we could really use one of these and have been waiting to have the extra cash, but now with the price of diesel it may never happen. Keep up the great work and enjoy the journey. We looked for you at the Tampa RV show I Jan. But didn't see you. Maybe on the road sometime???

Nice video but... Shouldn't you have put the SoftStartRV in the upright position? Seams to be prudent incase the waterproof exit of the box were not perfectly sealed.

Very cool information Chad...the bedroom A/C likely used more amps starting because it had a longer distance from the breaker box thus longer wire runs from the source? Also, it's good to see you invest in good tools and meters vs. the most inexpensive ones that usually make the job at hand more difficult and less professional.
