Awesome video man, I’m looking at getting into pm after being a hardware validation engineer for 3.5yrs and it has not been the easiest ride honestly, pretty hard to get into.

Yeah it’s very difficult. Have you been studying for PM interviews long?

@@Codebagel I started studying for the interviews like a little over a month ago, prior to that, I have just been gaining knowledge on getting an PMI-ACP certification

PM’s get paid less but allegedly have more authority. That’s what I got from the video. Theres no perfect job.
@Codebagel
@Codebagel 2 жыл бұрын
The pay is essentially the same, and PMs don’t really have authority. It’s moreso that SWEs do coding and technical work, while PMs do less coding and more general product and management work. They don’t actually have authority over SWEs.

@@contemplator1993 definitely! SWEs and PMs are at the same level. Honestly, PMs shouldn’t be called “managers” because they don’t actually manage people - they just act as project coordinators.

hmm...PMs may get paid a little less...but devs definitley work more hours if you consider all the new tech they have to learn on a constant basis....i think PM is definitley more 9 to 5.....Am I wrong?

What do you guys think about copilot and Chat GPT? I think it will affect Junior software engineering more than the product management because code can be written by a robot. However, It's hard to ideate and make processes which product manager does.

You can't be a senior at a role in 2-3 years. That just make the title less meaningful because there would be plenty of senior workers. What about people with 10-20 years of experience compared to somebody with 2-3 years of experience? There is also no formal title upgrade. Companies that even do yearly reviews aren't that common and they just don't say hey you''re a senior now. You mostly get a new position when you fill in for somebody else that moved up or left. Junior and senior positions you are talking about are like entry level or mid level at a company.
@Codebagel

Typically the path goes: Junior for 1-2 years, then regular SWE for 2-3 years, then senior. It depends on the company, but I know quite a few mid to late 20 year olds who are working as senior devs.
@wavereader8847
@wavereader8847 2 жыл бұрын
Also a junior role could be doing the same work load or more and same difficulty as the mid level or senior worker once they're trained. The only difference is less responsibility. Also there's usually just one product manager and it used to be called project manager so why the need for a junior and senior product manager? It's basically the same thing and same responsibility. So in this sense the junior and senior for a role is just basically how long you're with a company and mostly meaningless.
@Codebagel
@Codebagel 2 жыл бұрын
Just because the trajectories are similar does not mean the change in responsibility is meaningless. While a junior could be doing the same work as a lead or senior, they typically haven’t build up the skill set yet to handle the type of responsibility that seniors handle. I do agree that it’s very company dependent though, at some places the gap between levels is a lot smaller.
