Survival On Purpose

10 жыл бұрын

My son bought this SOG Sogfari 10" Tanto Machete a while back so I decided to do a quick review and see what you think. It is pretty sharp right out of the box, it chops very well and looks pretty cool too. And it's right around $25 on Amazon.
Here's a link to Amazon if you want to check it out:

I have one of these knives too. I'd trust it more as a survival knife than most for the cost. And while the saw isn't very useful for wood, it'd probably be good for bone. And a while back my brother in law and I were building a fort out of recycled materials around us and this blade was one of our MVP tools.

Andy Tran has some good survival tips :) Great video - I have not been a fan of the SOG machetes so far, but I really like their tomahawks. This looks pretty good though! You can really tell this machete excels at cutting the green wood. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, when my son bought this I thought it looked a little gimmicky but I it turned out to be a pretty good tool. It is sharp as the dickens and the Tanto blade shape does have some advantages in some situations.

The holes in the handle is for paracord or to wrap a specific material for a better grip, not for a spear (but you can do that I guess)

I just like living right there on that razor's edge ;-) I do need to get a better chopping block, that one gets on my nerves. Also, I know SOG has been catching flak for out lower priced Chinese made gear, but I still like them. One of my sons has both a Seal Pup and an SOG Multi Tool and they both rock as far as I'm concerned. I like this little Sogfari too. The reality is not everyone has room in their budget for higher priced gear and I for one am glad companies like SOG, Schrade, Gerber and some others have done what they needed to do to bring a good value in outdoor gear to us average folks. Sorry for the mini rant. Thanks for the concern for my fingers. - Bryan

I almost bought it today, the saw looked really dull though like youd have to sharpen it. Like it comes dull on the saw end but the blade end comes sharp. I just like it cause its all black and is slightly unique . I might pick it up . In canada its 35 bucks

I got the Gerber Gator Machete Jr at wally world for 17 and change. A word of caution on yours. Mine came with a lanyard that is specifically made to loop over the front of the handle and prevents your hand from moving forward if you lose your grip. If that one came with one I'd suggest putting it back on for this reason. There is a video of the Gerber compared to another and a military issue machete and it performed well. I got it specifically to saw off pine branches and stumps for lighter wood. I live in NC and there are lots of pines around. I wlll be using the Nano wood stove so this tool will come in handy for those purposes. I enjoy your channel and subscribed as soon as I saw some of your vids. I use your amazon link too but not sure how it works. If I click on it and save stuff to cart and leave will you still get credit when I log back in later then purchase? Thanks Bryan!

That is a good question about Amazon. I don't know. I know if you click through to Amazon from one of my links I get credit for 24 hours unless you click through somebody else's link. Basically the last link used in the past 24 hours is the one that counts (I think). I am going to try to find out about the saved stuff. Thanks for the support. It really helps.

Not an actual machete, but small enough to carry conveniently, and a heavy blade for chopping. The sheath is a joke. Minimalist useful and planned obsolescent. You have to work it: heat it a bit and put a cinder block on top to flatten it and ease it a bit. Where the widest edge fits in needs to be glued securely or the blade will cut the sheath open. A plastic liner for guiding the tip in, or the very sharp tip will easily cut its way out through the side and destroy the sheath. Needs reinforcement of the top lip where the saw back will shred it. The little velcro closure is wimpy and velcro just isn't very secure or long lasting anyway. Mine destroyed itself quickly at _all_ of these points. You need to be extremely careful putting it in or taking it out or these failures occur easily. I rebuilt it into a better more durable and secure sheath as a project for gorilla glue, an old plastic container, some scrap leather and webbing. Sending it back under warranty might be problematic, since they could say it's beyond normal wear & tear, and any replacement sheath would suffer from the same issues. Whoever designed it didn't test it for any duration: the tool is excellent... At other things, but especially at wrecking it.
