This was an incredible moment in the filming of Regenerative Soil Microscopy, and I just had to share the footage and shoot a new video around it for you all. It's never-before-seen footage - there's no images of this in the literature or from any of my mentors. AND this breaks down the walls around what is and isn't omnivorous: it has bacterial feeder mouthparts but it if it encounters smalls spores it'll eat those too, AND it's either hurting the amoeba, eating the amoeba, or in the very least ruining that testate amoeba's day, BUT it may also be that they are like clams and they filter feed and then close reflexively. SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!!! That's the reason we're going to have the R-Soil Database in 2024 - stay tuned for that!!

Amazing "soil scientists" have been preaching NPK for over 60 years, then pushing petrochemical fertilizers. All along it's the soil microbiome that matters the most. Thank you Matt

Once the database is up we'll have so much more of the picture as my students and more signup and contribute images and video. We'll be able to map out way more and understand the nuance of occurrences like this.

That's an amazing shot. I think the nematode outgrew the Amoeba's mouth. Brings a new perspective to sleeping with your mouth open!

Thank you for sharing this breakthrough and contexting why this matters, Matt! There's so much more to come, with the momentum of interest here AND graduates of your course, both the professionals and citizen-scientists, who contribute to the R-Soil Database!

At first, I thought it was a macroscopic clam until Mr. Powers mentioned it was two specimens.

Great footage Matt, but plenty of sources note these testate amoeba nematode interactions: "Some testate amoebae are also able to ingest and feed on nematodes" (Yeates and Foissner 1995) "The nematodes are mainly attacked from the tail end. Again, it is not known how important this trophic interaction is in the environment, but the authors note that many extracted nematodes from the studied soil appeared to have tail damages resembling those inflicted by the testate amoebae. This suggests that this interaction could be of significance in sites with high abundance of testate amoebae (e.g. moist forest litter or bogs)." Rønn, Vestegård and Ekelund 2012. Also have a look at "Pack hunting by a common soil amoeba on nematodes". by Geisen, Rosengard, et al 2015

Play it back - I said images and video of this, not the information itself. The soil food web is a concept from the 80s and cycling is even older. My own published work also has quotes to the same effect above.
