Sokolov doesn't like to talk to media. And for a good reason - he is busy talking to composer in whose music he is interested in. Timeline in his case has no importance - that conversation is to have for them two only, we are just allowed to be present and experience this miracle of confluence of two talents. Which is immense communal benefit and priviledge in itself. Artists like him are exceptional rarity. The intimacy of his interpretation doesn't come cheap - intense engagement with chosen material is evident in unbelievably nuanced technical and sonic richness. In turn it requres a punishing routine he is known for. But elegance, lightness of touch and utter taste in delivering prerequisite decorations are just breathtaking. Every time I listen to his Rameau I get chocked with emotion. This old music ( a personal poison of choice ) in his hands is alive, sparkly, deep and meaningful. Naturally, that elusive, moody, poetic nature of french baroque has have been exquisitely captured in his loving hands. Only warm affinity of a performer with chosen material can produce such an affect on listener. Thank you, Master.

We are so lucky to have perhaps the only pianist with such a passion for Rameau, and who performs it at the highest level imaginable. And thank you for the excellent transfer.

+classicalalways Don't overlook Marcelle Meyer's Rameau. You won't be disappointed, it is equal to this fine Sokolov in her own way.

Absolutely agree! She is unjustly forgotten master player, who offered entirely different yet compelling and original interpretation to the same material. While Sokolov is all structure, precise articulation and rigor infused with controled lyricism she is something else. Meyer's touch is liquid and luminous and very light. I am not choosing between these two - they both important to me. Being russian I get these very russian somber ominous rumblings and shaded view of things so intrinsic to his approach. Culturally he is much closer to me. But Meyer's luminosity and floating sound with that maddningly elusive french melancholic elegance is the treasure to behold. Try her Rameau - it is heaven...

Another wonderful Rameau pianist is Natacha Kudritskaya. She plays it as if it's Chopin.

I discovered her Rameau recording last year. Absolutely agreed. It is so surprising also for me as russian with ukrainan upbringing to hear ukrainian musician respond to baroque repertoire at all. It is virtually impossible to have it played well at home since local Conservatoire still teaches that overtly emoting romantic style in keyboard performing. You are right to spot that quality in her, but sher tempered that romanticism with irony and fluid tempos and it worked! I am glad it is getting around. Thank you for your reply!

Sergei Babayan also quite frequently includes Rameau on his programs, but has not recorded it yet, and seemingly won't for some time, as his next CD's for DG should be of Mozart sonatas, Rachmaninoff solo pieces, and the Goldberg Variations.

The choice of the piano is very wise. the instrument is very clear, and is well suited to play pieces for harpsichord.Sokolov is great in that suite in D. One can feel that he loves Rameau. his interpretation is very close to the harpsichord style, and he uses the expressive possibilities of the piano to better render the nuances of the music of Rameau. Thanks, M,; Solokov !

I wonder what trills meant in the musical aesthetics of Rameau's day. Nowadays it is hard not to be extremely conscious of their abundance.
@franknijhoff6009
@franknijhoff6009 8 жыл бұрын
+fslubin I think it has to do with the fact that this was originally written for clavecin where there is no real dynamics. So the trills and decorations are there, presumably, to make up for the dynamics. Sokolov has the great ability to emulate the clavecin sound. In his Berlin recital recording of `Les tendres plaintes' this is even more striking, as perhaps the Berlin Steinway was voiced to have that effect.

No, this is a bootleg live performance. It's not been officially released. However, some of the movements were played as encores, which have been officially released. Sokolov's concerts from the past 10+ years have, however, all been officially recored. DG is releasing the more recent ones. His old record label, Op.111, might have the rights to the older ones - or maybe they were acquired by DG too? The thing is, Sokolov is just not interested in reviewing the recordings for release. There will be a lot of material that will come out when he passes on, I'm sure.
