Sola Scriptura Versus Tradition

Sola Scriptura is one of the most important teachings of the Christian faith. God has given us his word and he has told us that his word is enough to make us complete in the faith, thoroughly equipped for every good work. We don't need Catholic tradition or heretical popes and bishops. All we need is God's Word. Jesus rejected tradition and appealed to God's Word as the final authority. Jesus said traditions of men are subordinate to the Word of God.

As a gay Catholic, sola scripture denies my dignity as a human being. Catholicism has a long, though often hidden tradition of homosexuality especially among clergy, that it is finally coming to terms with and blessing! It is the true Church of the loving God with the Pope his infallible vicar on earth.

My question and pushback would be that if scripture alone is all that is needed, then does that mean the apostles and early church were going against the cannon as they were writing the epistles not even knowing that the would be made into the Bible? While there are verses that do say that the scriptures are good or profitable, nowhere does it say scriptures alone. (2 Thess 2:15, 1 Cor 11:1-2 ) Also, if scripture is infallible, why did the reformers remove the deuterocananical texts that are referenced in the NT? And you are deciving while quoting St John Chrysostom. Who was also Orthodox and held to the teachings of the Orthodox Church. Hr wrote much more on Mary and the Saints. Orthodox read scripture in every liturgy BTW. We hold the Bible as sacred as well. Might want to get a better understanding before giving false information.

@jlynn5680 You said, “Nowhere does it say scripture alone.” - Oh but it does… Isaiah 40:8 8 The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.” Matthew 24:35 (Jesus states) 35 “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.” Hebrews 6:18 18 “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.” People break their promises, their word, their oaths often. But the Lord never has and never will. His Word is priceless, profound and trustworthy. Everything else will fade and disappear… but His Word will last f-o-r-e-v-e-r. His Word is what sustains us (Jeremiah 15:16)

Jesus predicted a “vicar” in the sense of a “replacement” for His physical presence here on earth. However, this “vicar of Christ” is not a priest, high priest, bishop, or pope. The only biblical “Vicar of Christ” is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Teacher (John 14:26), and guide into all truth (John 16:13). Catholics = Vicar is the pope (man who is fallible) Christians = Vicar is the Holy Spirit (God who is infallible) Catholics = tradition (changed over time) Christians - Scripture (never changes)

@DB - Bro, Bible does say traditions. But the issue is, when the Bible says traditions, it is the traditions practised by the 1st century believers in Christ that include the apostles. This tradition of the apostles is now preserved in the New Testament scriptures only. That's why we go "Sola Scriptura". From the New American Standard Bible (NASB), 2 Thessalonians 2:15 reads: "So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the TRADITIONS which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us." So, as the apostle Paul says by the Holy Spirit, we should hold firm to the traditions in the letters of the New Testament, and these traditions in the letters of the New Testament prevent us from praying to the dead, prevent us from accepting purgatory, prevent us from accepting the mother of Jesus Christ the man as mother of the church, prevent us from accepting Mary as the Queen of Heaven, prevent us from accepting the assumption Mary resurrected since it is obviously an assumption, prevent us from accepting Mary being an eternal virgin, prevent us from accepting Mary as sinless and therefore co-mediator and co-saviour along with Jesus Christ, and so forth. I hope Catholics wake up for their own sakes. God bless all Catholics and all Protestants and all Orthodox and all others who are called by God to obey the Word of God.

@@DB_- Find where the UNbiblical doctrine of “Sola Scriptura” is in Scripture as it denies the whole entire New Testament and contradicts itself since it operates in the basis that Jesus gave Peter and his disciples a Bible today Pentecost instead of the Holy Spirit who “will bring to remembrance all that I have taught you and keep you in the Truth bringing you to it in all things. You can’t yet bear the full Truth but the Holy Spirit will guide you to it.” This is the same legalism Jesus condemns the Pharisees and you my Protestant brothers and sisters as you deny John 16:13 and the Power and Authority of the Holy Spirit to lead all into Truth as the final say in matters not Scripture. John 16:13 “ But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father-the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future]. Jesus did not leave the early Church a Bible or Scriptures. Who has the final authority? GOD DOES NOT SCRIPTURE as Catholics got it right and Protestants do not as they reverted to the legalism of the Pharisees.

In order for the NT to exist, they had to be written by men. Men guided by the Holy Spirit. Those men were Catholics since Jesus founded the Catholic Church. If Scriptures written by men are infallible then those men and the Church they represent is infallible. The NT affirms this by telling us the Church is the Pillar of Truth.

@@randycarson9812 Thank you for your question. Your assertions were well thought out and outlined nicely. I’m afraid my answer is gonna be a lot less complicated and much simpler. Scripture is obviously my go to. “ all Scripture is God breathed, and useful in teaching, correcting, rebuking and training in all righteousness” 2nd Timothy 3:16 Jesus used the written word of God when ever his Authority was challenged. When satan tempted him he didn’t quote a Jewish sage. He spoke the word. You say we should fallow the ancient Hebrews who used tradition for Authority. I have problem with that, obviously. Jesus admonished them. He called them fools. He said “ you’ve left the commandments of God and fallow traditions of men” mark 7:8 And I think that is crux of the issue. When traditions lead people from God, or teach contrary to what is written. People think if they to a check list of tasks they will be ok with God. Jesus says “if anyone what’s to be my disciple, they must pick up their cross, crucify their flesh and fallow me” Matt 16:24 If I want to know what a believer looks like I look at the apostles and the church in acts. They didn’t have fancy robes or stained glass.they were changed from the inside out, given new hearts. They went from loud mouth fishermen unscrupulous tax collector murderous Pharisee to men of such humility and gratitude. Men and women willing to lay down there very lives for the truth of Jesus the messiah. That is not the work of man.

I was reading 2nd Timothy chapter 3 to answer you and it reminded me of how the Holy Spirit brought me to salvation in Christ. I’m compelled to share it with you. 2nd Tim 3 is all about deceivers evil men using religion to take advantage of the week. Paul tell how to combat it. He says to study the scriptures! The Bible tells me it is sufficient to lead to salvation in Christ and to keep us on the narrow path 2 Tim 3:15/16. Paul praised the Bereans because rather than believe what Paul was saying they went and searched the scriptures to see if what he was saying was true. Acts 17 10-15 Jesus admonished the pharisees for leaving what the scriptures said to fallow their traditions. Mark 7 1:17 I know what you will say, What about the other two “pillars of authority”? Frankly I don’t have a problem with them. You might be surprised to hear that. This were Jesus, the Holy scripture and little me have a problem with tradition and councils, when they contradict or twist what was already given to us the in the scriptures. That is a serious problem. So what do you follow if tradition or councils contradict what the Bible tells us? I know what I fallow. Listen, I have a lot more to say about the rest of your comment. I’ll send another message tonight. Please withhold judgment :) sorry I have so many things to do, so little time. God bless.

Connecting the message in John 6 to communion to justify summoning rituals is demonic. John 6:35 is how you eat His flesh and drink His blood, and it has nothing to do with earthly food and drink or rituals. I would also hope they realize that with the eternal sacrifice of the mass, putting Christ BACK on the cross forever, is the opposite of having faith in his complete work on the cross. So, as the apostle Paul says by the Holy Spirit, we should hold firm to the traditions in the letters of the New Testament, and these traditions in the letters of the New Testament prevent us from praying to the dead, prevent us from accepting purgatory, prevent us from accepting the mother of Jesus Christ the man as mother of the church, prevent us from accepting Mary as the Queen of Heaven, prevent us from accepting the assumption Mary resurrected since it is obviously an assumption, prevent us from accepting Mary being an eternal virgin, prevent us from bowing down to idols, prevent us from accepting Mary as sinless and therefore co-mediator and co-saviour along with Jesus Christ, and so forth. I hope Catholics wake up for their own sakes. God bless all Catholics and all Protestants and all Orthodox and all others who are called by God to obey the Word of God.

@randycarson9812 The usual laundry list of objections, have you maybe thought that they are always the same because they are valid? Catholics provide answers but not any that align with the teachings in scripture. Occasionally you'll provide some that on the surface may look legitimate but all one has to do is, read further for context, pull out the concordance, read other scripture to see if you can find any other that supports it and finally use logic and common sense. So yes, it's appalling that anyone would put anyone other than God on such an alter and then claim that scripture justifies it! Praying to the dead for intercession when scripture is not ONLY clear on that only 1 person Jesus Christ can do that but also think that praying to dead people for the living/ or the dead is justified when scripture provides evidence to the contrary. I can too easily continue along with the scripture that contradicts every non biblical teaching that you claim is biblically sound. Finally, before you ask, the authority that I have to speak on such things and read scripture and then in turn understand as to spread the good news and be used BY God for God's will was given to me AND every born again Christian by God by the holy spirit in the moment we were saved by grace thru faith and demonstrated by our works that God prepared for us ahead of time prior to our birth as we ARE HIS workmanship. Nothing we can do in the form of works will lead anyone to eternal life.

I mention the church fathers because, while they are instrumental in proving the New Testament we have today is the same as it was in the 2nd century, because of their exhaustive commentaries on the New Testament, they were mostly from Asia Minor, to which Paul warns at the end of his ministry; 2 Timothy 1:15 "You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes." The church fathers unfortunately did not understand or use the Apostle Paul's writings correctly, which is why it took until Martin Luther to straighten out the entire "justification by faith" debacle. However, Luther didn't go far enough, and failed to establish Paul as the Apostle for the current Body of Christ during Israel's fall (Romans 11, Ephesians 3). This dispensation of grace given to Paul is so important and completely missed by most of Christianity for the last 2000 years.

There is no biblical definition of "sola scriptura". Luther invented it in the 16th century. Your main problem is that the bible HAS TO BE ESTABLISHED AS HOLY SCRIPTURE AND INTERPRETED. 2. Timothy 3:13-17 does not even tell you what scripture he is talking about. But you skipped the first part of it which says that what Timothy has learned he learned from Paul and that this is valid because Timothy knew from whom he learned it. That is Faith in Apostolic Tradition. Scripture is important because Apostolic Tradition says so. It is not scripture talking here in 2. Timothy. It is a person of authority. "Sola scriptura" makes scripture a godhead and overrides authority that Jesus has given to the Apostles. Indeed not only interpretation but also selecting what writings are part of Holy Scripture was determined by those who were in Apostolic succession. And isn`t it astounding that based on "sola scriptura" you now have countless protestant churches and movements with all kinds of different and opposing interpretations of the bible who all think they are right because of "sola scriptura"? That alone is showing you that "sola scriptura" is not working. The Catholic Church in contrast had not to change one of their doctrines since 2.000 years. And the sentence that "All scripture is given by inspiration of God ..." does not tell you anything of "Only scripture" and it describes the value of scripture as a tool for the Christian life to be "equipped for every good work". However it does not talk about "authority of scripture" or that Timothy should only rely on scripture and his interpretation of it.

I was raised a catholic, until…I actually seriously started to read the Bible. We can read in Scriptures that Lord Jesus commanded the Apostles to first preach the Gospel to the Jews, and after also to the Heathen or Gentiles (but never vise versa ! ). I found out in Scriptures who of the Apostles for the first time went to Rome .. and it wasn't Peter. In the Book of Acts it says in Chapter 28 the following: 16 "And when we came to Rome, the Centurion delivered the Prisoners to the Captain of the Guard: but Paul was allowed to live in a house, by himself, with a Roman Soldier that kept him. 17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the Chief of the there living Jews together: and when they came together, Paul said to them: "Men and Brethren, though I have committed nothing against our people, our customs, or against our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of guild in me. 19 But when the Jews spoke against that verdict, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had made any accusations against my Nation. 20 For this Hope (the Gospel of Jesus Christ) therefore I have called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because for the Hope of Israel I am bound with these chains. 21 The Chief of the Jews said to Paul: "We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning you, neither any of the Brethren that came from there shewed or spoke any harm of you. 22 But we desire to hear of you what you think: for concerning this sect, we know that it is spoken against everywhere". The Roman catholic church claims that it was Peter who went to Rome first to preach the Gospel there first and that it was Peter who founded the Church there. Question: who lies? God,... or the Roman catholic church ? And what about the Letter in the Bible from Paul to the Congregation of Galatians where it says this in Chapter 2? From verse 7 we read the following: 7 "But on the contrary, when they saw that the Gospel of the Uncircumcision (Gentiles) was committed unto me, as the Gospel of the Circumcision (Jews) was unto Peter; 8 for He that gave Peter power effectively to the Apostleship of the circumcision (again: the Jews), the Same was Mighty in me toward the Gentiles. 9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the Grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we (that are Paul and Barnabas) should go unto the Heathen, and they unto the Circumcision. Again dear catholic’s: who lies? God’s Word, or the Roman catholic church? Bible, the book of Acts, Chapter 5, verse 29 : Then Peter and the other Apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey GOD - rather than man” !! Since the Roman catholic 'church' claims to be well-read on scriptures, then please point me in the direction of where in the Bible it says to pray to a woman, or with a rosary praising Mary, or to dead “saints.” Lord Jesus calls every believer Saints which all are who received the Holy Spirit and confess that Jesus is Lord - so Rome has no authority appointing only some people saint - that is ludicrous. Please show me the name ‘pope’ in the Bible? Please show me where it says to call any mortal sinful man (the pope) your father. Please show me where the Bible says anything about purgatory, or paying indulgences (buying yourself into heaven - is God corrupt ?). Please show me where Mary was sinless? Why is it that Catholics worship Mary still as a virgin when Lord Jesus had half brothers and half sisters? Please show me where it says to confess your sins to a fellow sinful man so that he may forgive them? Where does the Bible say the pope is the “vicar of Christ” on earth? Show me where it says that a preacher must be unmarried? It was the pagan ROMAN Emperor Constantine who was in fact the first “pope” who hijacked the first Christian Communion in Rome founded by the apostle Paul, and he didn't allow for the common people to have Bible Scriptures...to keep believers ignorant to stay in power, as the Catholic Church still tries to do. Later pope’s started the ‘inquisition’ because the book printing machine was invented and people like Martin Luther and William Tyndale could spread the Bible to the common people: they were persecuted and burned to dead for that by decree of Rome, and so were hundreds others who did the same as they denounced the FALSE doctrines of Rome. Rome called them heretics and witches while they murdered Christians who loved Jesus and true Scriptures. (PLEASE GET OUT OF THIS FALSE CHURCH !!! The Roman catholic “church” is a continuation of the old Roman PAGAN Empire: it never went away as it disguised itself as a Christian Church. Read Revelation, Chapter 17: verse 7, 8 and 9…Read also Revelation 18 to see what God will do to this “church.”

Why exclude such an important figure in Jesus' time, especially if he were the pope of the church? After the 300 years of persecution he changed his tactic to infiltration and corruption from within. But God uses even that for his glory. The persecution never really stoped. The RCC took it over. Just look up the book of martyrs or the history in general. The reformation was a response to all what went wrong. It was not created by Luther. He didn't even expect what happened. He wanted a disscusion. But ended up being the fire to the fuel.

@@randycarson9812 You don't get it. Jesus teaches that scripture is above tradition. Isn't it obvious. Didn't you read what the pharesees did? Catholics and orthodox are like them. They believe in the bible, but also in traditions and the church fathers and the councils and the popes and catholic doctrine or orthodox. And they have a gospel, that cannot save and is not in the bible. Gospel means good news. What is the good news in this institutions? The bible is Gods word. It is inspired. Not the church fathers. They were not perfect. We have to judge them according to the bible. Same for traditions, teachings, etc. The word trinity is not in the bible. But the concept is. The sola Scriptura concept is in the bible. Gods word is Gods word. We have evidence for that. It's not a blind faith. We don't believe to shut up your mind. I don't see the problem. Why do you need all the traditions and all that stuff? Isn't keeping the commandments hard enough? Do you guys think, that God is interested if you do all the catholic or orthodox stuff? All he cares is that you follow him directely, like the apostles did. Repent and trust in Christ alone. Not in your works. The works are not good works, if the intention is to be or remain saved. In order for us to do good works, that are acceptable, We have to get saved completely, so that the good works can follow for the right reasons. Otherwise it becomes a bribe. Do you think, God can be bribed by our works? Makes no sense. You get saved, then the real good works can follow. Of course christians can sin. Should not be so. But it is. We have to grow and go on to repent. A disciplined deciple. So that we can be usefull christians. All that traditions and false doctrines like the mass and prayers to marry are not only bad. They are a waste of time.

@@TheRastacabbage You nead scripture for common sense? In the Video he talked about the passage, where Jesus rebukes the pharesees for trumthe word of God with their traditions. What is so difficult to understand? In revelation is written not to take away or add to the word of God. It's very easy. All the Extra stuff from catholocism, eastern orthodoxy. Koptic and even other denominations like lutherans or SDAdventists, Jehovas W. or Mormons is unbiblical. Even if someone have some truth from the bible in it. If the foundation is weak, then the house cannot stand. So can you justify the 7 sacraments for example by the scriptures? A priest or bishop cannot fullfill the marriage sacrament. Is celebacy in the bible? I don't mean, if someone wants too. They have to. The worship of Mary as the queen of heaven or the prayer to her or even dead saints. All I see is to pray to the father through the holy spirit in the name of Jesus. There is one mediator. The man Christ Jesus. So what do you understand by Sola Scriptura? What we mean is that the bible is the highest authority on earth. Not institutions with extra biblical doctrines, church fathers, feelings or whatever. Doesn't mean we hate all the church fathers or don't use common sense. For example the sabbath is for the jews. We know this by the scriptures. The catholic church changed the days in order to have the sunday as the 7th day. Does that mean that we reject the sunday as the day to go to church? No, bc the people in the New testament met on the 1st day, bc Christ had risen on that day. Wednesday should be the day in the middle of the week. 4rth day. In german Wednesday is called Mittwoch. That means mid week. Or saturday is called sabbath day in italien. Who cares? Gods word is inspired by God. All the rest can be good or bad. The last word has the bible. You cannot trump a biblical doctrine with a catholic one for example. God gave us the bible for a reason. So that we know the truth objectively. Without it truth becomes subjective.

When was the rosary itself invented? Not at the time of Jesus. What did Jesus say about how to pray? Did He say I needed a string of beads which guides me to say the Our Father( far less than I say Hail Mary's? ). No. Did Jesus say I cannot approach Him unless His mother lets me go to Him? No. No way. How do I know if a said- saint is in heaven or not when I am not in heaven yet? Is the test for this by the Catholic church accurate or infallible? Hardly. Did Jesus kiss statues? Did Jesus say a wooden, plaster statue could or would weep or bleed or that I should gaze on them in prayer? Do you think Jesus would bow before a statue? Is that what his disciples did? I'm not doing this because it may offend God terribly. No excuses. Now, should a woman be head of the church or its pastor. No! Only in extreme situations where there are no men at all. Yet, here we have loads of women pastors with tons of men simpering under them. We Christians have many more than these problems which need to be rectified before God. Jesus, help us!

Quick question for the sola scriptura proponents. When two non-Catholic Christians disagree on the interpretation of scripture, how do they reconcile who has the correct interpretation? What authority do they appeal to? It can't be scripture, because that's the thing in question. However, if they appeal to an authority outside of scripture and they allow that authority to dictate how they should interpret the scripture in question, then they would appealing to an authority that is not only outside of scripture, but just as authoritative. This very appeal defeats the doctrine altogether. I am sorry for all those that have been lied to about the Catholic Church. I'm even more sorry that you have believed those lies.

One more thing to note is that the Catholic church did not become exactly what it is now until the 17th century. The Christian church was already divided and was far from universal (Catholic) before the councils took place in the 4th century. The scriptures were already available to all the churches well before the end of the 1st century. Paul spoke about the existence of those written scriptures in the church in several of his epistles. History and scripture both disapprove the Catholic Church claim over the Bible.

Sola Scriptura? A biblical text that is used to justify Sola Scripture is 2 Timothy 3:16-17 what does it say: "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." Here the question is, does this text really justify Sola Scripture? The truth is NO for several reasons: The text of 2 Timothy 3:16 says that "All 1. Scripture is inspired by God...", it does not say "ONLY Scripture is inspired by God...", which is very different. 2. If we read the previous verse we will realize that Saint Paul there refers only to the Scripture known at that time, that is, the Old Testament, let's see: 2 Timothy 3:15 "and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." As we can see here Paul tells Timothy that it is the Scripture that Timothy knows "from childhood", logically in Timothy's childhood the only Scriptures known were those of the Old Testament, since the New Testament was just beginning to be written. 3-Which Old Testament Scriptures was Saint Paul referring to? To those of the Septuagint that Protestants reject. How do we know? Because Paul speaks to Timothy who was a Hellenized Jew from the Diaspora, let us remember that in the Diaspora Greek was spoken and that is why the Greek version of the Septuagint was used. Is this a Catholic invention? NO, this is stated by the doctor in Theology and Reverend of the Evangelical Church of Armenia Manuel M. Jinbachian in his essay "The Septuagint: between the synagogue and the church": We must not forget that the LXX was really the book that paved the way for the spread of the gospel. When Paul preached in the synagogues of Asia Minor, along with the Greek-speaking Jews who came to worship in those synagogues, he encountered proselytes who had converted from Judaism through reading the LXX." Therefore, the text of 2 Timothy 3:16 does not at any point endorse the invention of Sola Scripture.
