My father did that too. My sister and I were idylly sitting at home doing nothing. He bought our tickets and said to us...I will have none of my children wasting away under a useless government that cannot provide for their children. My mum followed us to UK. We didn't let our father down. We all graduated.

So so proud of Sola Sobowale, I remember seeing her in Peckham (South East London) humbly buying her food stuff from the market maybe 15 years ago and back then she was already a Nollywood star and very easily recognisable. Lovely to hear her story, love to all mothers that sacrifice for their children 💕💕

I don’t know why people always want to belittle you when you do menial jobs. So far as it is honest and I have a vision, I will do it. I worked for 4 years cleaning and working in kitchens. Now I can tell you that God has blessed the work of my hands. I don’t do that anymore, but the lessons I got while doing it, has helped me for where I am now and where God is taking me. I love this woman and her grit.

Honestly..the term "menial job" still baffles me....especially when you know the difference between the salary (not proceeds of 'roger'/under the table deals) of a director in a federal government ministry in Nigeria and a cleaner in McDonalds/KFC; a train cleaner in London; etc...Nnnaaa...we need to redefine this term oh

It is the Nigerian mentality. They consider you below class when you do certain jobs as if it is spirits that will come to do those jobs. Funny thing is, you might even be doing far better than the people who are supposedly doing "classy/choice jobs" but Noooo, just becos he/she isn't sweeping people's rooms, or washing plates, it means he/she is living a successful dream life and job. Very stupid mindset to be honest

@@tinuoshunkoya Make sure when you make the money, you enjoy first! Those who spite you for working anywhere still beg you money! You then decide whether to give or not. However I DO NOT agree and I KNOW its NOT only Nigerians or in Nigeria that people think that way. Even abroad, some doctors look down on nurses,same nurses you hold in high regard and same in several other professions. God created all colour ALIKE. Abroad, people do many disgusting things, you don't don't want to know, but they do it SUBTLY...not loud about it but it will still be obvious at some point either way. Many can't come out just because of the laws, if they could, some of them can even spit on your face. The way people discriminate may defer but its THE SAME behaviour....DISCRIMINATION, STIGMA e.t.c. Lets make our point, many problems in Nigeria exist in other places...let's focus on the problem. Being foreign is not automatic "common sense", or "good manners/reasoning"

This is a deeply rooted woman. Not superficial in any way, real to the core. Raised by a school Principal , good parents gave her the firm foundation in life. I greatly admired your courage, you are the kind of people Nigeria needs. I hope you decide one day to be a blessing to the Country and hold a public post....I am sure we will not be let down. There is surely dignity in labour and that is what most people nowadays don't know.

I salute the courage of this woman. She saw where Nigeria was heading years ago. That's called foresight! She decided to relocate her children out of the mess Nigeria had become. She did all that was legally necessary to maintain herself and her children in a foreign land. Job is job, white or blue collared, it doesn't matter. There is dignity in labour, and that is what matters. Well done Mrs SOBOWALE. You'll live long to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

This is just me this reminded me of when I had to relocate from UK to Nigeria to give my son sound education, morals, culture etc. Most people drop their kids in boarding but i sacrificed the 10 years stayed with him, resigned from my banking job here just to make sure everything went the way I had wanted and planned. Today we are back and everybody could tell and see the difference in him.My main reason relocating then was because of him being a single mum I hated the idea of dropping him off at child minders or with friends just running after money, not only that bring up a male child alone in this environment is very challenging but, back home I set up my my own business and had full custody of him today it's all history and he is a 24 year old successful man, graduate and now work in his chosen career. Now am back pursing my career and he is forever grateful, i mean so much to him and he is glad having both worlds.

When Nigerian politicians destroyed the educational system because their children are not in Nigerian schools, I don't blame those who can afford good education elsewhere. I did 2 menial jobs at the same time while studying in the UK and I am glad I made that decision. It changed my life.

You’re an inspiration to me Madam, am doing same in the US to make life better for my children. I had my own office as hotel supervisor back in Ghana but came here and realized the hotel business wasn’t paying and time consuming, I couldn’t have time for my children especially on weekends, I noticed I was loosing the bonding with my children, I left my entire career to become a CNA so I can have a flexible schedule in order to to be there for my kids.God bless you for all you did for the sake of your children.

This is the reality of most Nigerians abroad and other migrants alike. At one point or the other, you will have to do these jobs but the good thing is that there is dignity in labour in these countries. @Grace & Mercy Not necessarily. The unemployment benefits that the citizens receive is often more than they pay of these menial jobs so many don't even bother to do these jobs... even of they wanted to. Once they start working, their unemployment benefits would be stopped or reduced, so it's often better for then to remain unemployed than to do the menial jobs. That's why it's mostly immigrants who do them.

People most definitely shame or look down on certain professions. Classism is real everywhere. The difference is that it is easier to maneuver on several tiers because the classes can be more fluid and are determined by more than financial status.

As a child who was part of a generation of children of West African descent fostered out to white families in rural England in the 60s, 70s & 80s, severed from our cultural roots and connection to our community. Hearing this message warms my heart. When the transmission of culture is disrupted through these separations early on in life it makes it much harder to hold on to a sense of pride and to create a positive identity that can withstand the anti black racist narrative that is part of the fabric of Western society. The love she has for her children is palpable. We cannot underestimate the power of healthy parental bonds 💓

There is absolute dignity in labour here in the Uk do a good job and you get paid for it! I’ve been there and I’ve done that! And it yielded great results for us a family! Even as a Carer which a lot of Nigerians look down on it there is dignity as a cleaner there is dignity! I am based in the US with my family but I live everyday thinking of how I can find my way back to Nigeria...…..despite all the challenges, it is not true that the case of Nigeria is a hopeless one. I have seen parents send their kids abroad to study or greener pasture without adult or parental guide, its tricky and often boomerang on those kids with some turning out worse than they left Nigeria...…..On that I give it to her for staying around to guide, nurture and also mentor them practically on ground.

For your information there are many types of people abroad and don't just generalise. There are people without staying or paper, these are nit entitled to anything. There are people that are citizens and are entitled to everything. There are uneducated, unskilled people. There are many educated and skilled people as well. People don’t understand how hard some work to take care of their families. Sometimes we look at people doing certain jobs but we don’t know why. Everyone has a story.

I can confirm what she said about working here is true. I was at a head dressers and a Nigerian movie was on and a lady saw her on telly and said she saw her working at a particular place doing a particular job and Africans here class it as menial because it’s not the type of work we are proud to tell people. Honestly, I didn’t believe. I applaud her because she is a hard working woman 👏🏼👏🏼

If that is the angle you are seeing it from " indirect slavery" or whatever you need to learn lessons from what she did sacrificing her stardom to take a good care of her children worth it... honestly, l salute her courage of her humility. Today, she is enjoying it & hoping to return to what she knows best....l advise next time, you can rephrase the word " indirect slavery" l thought it must not be heard from you. Ain't good enough rather learn something from her disposition.

Kayode don't lecture me, it is what it is...indirect slavery. It's not in the West best interest to have a prosperous Africa where citizens of developing countries desire and decide to stay in their respective countries. Then, the West wouldn't have enough cheap labour to exploit. African leaders are puppets to neo colonialist masters and your mentality exposes you and your future generations to never ending slavery.

I take it if you say , Neo colonialism bcos l got that from the author of the book, " Underdeveloped World" . My take is she did it bcos of what she want to achieve taking care of her four beloved daughter. Of course, she knows that it's advanced slavery. I love that sentence There is dignity in labour. I remember seeing Mrs Sobowale at Heathrow airport rushing to go catch her plane. She looked harried and her cream-colour blouse was rumpled. I recognised her and gave her a hug to let her know she was a loved artist. I hope that gave her some joy as it did me.

So proud of you and of myself too. I did same to the US in 2002 , as a Vice Principal in a Secondary school to forgo the idea of getting to the peak of my career in order to secure the future of my children as a single mom. My first daughter was already in her 1st year at FUTA, Akure and I was already taking loans from Cooprative societies due to non payments of salaries and allowances!! Lord! I return all glory to God and thanks to my 2 siblings who God used for us to facilitate and ease the relocation. May God intervene in Nigeria situation in Jesus's name. O ga!

Blessed, highly respected and successful in life + l love you in and out of screen ma. You are one to emulate. When l see my brothers and sisters in diaspora being lazy and choosy about menial jobs. l shake my head at them. A few years down the line they become depressed and blame the system when their mates have gone very far. Then whose to blame? Rome wasn't built in day. This video has loads of contents that is so dear to me. Back in 2003 at boniwuji cyber cafe, Chude would come in, spend countless hours researching contents, then Funmi Iyanda was the rave. Right there at the same cafe, was where i started my software engineering journey. This is 2022, 19 years later, Chude is a big shot doing what he loves graciously. I didn't fail too, I still code for a company here in New Jersey, and hope my startup will kick off this year. As for Mrs Sobowale and all the REAL mothers out there, thank you for enabling our dreams come true.

"I can't love this women LESS" actually means that you dislike the person in question so much that you can't even dislike her further.("love her less") These expressions honestly confuse so many people. I did exactly what she did for my children in 2001 when I moved them to the USA. I went through a lot to get them good education. Today, I have two registered nurses, one senior auditor and one network engineer. Genuine sacrifice for one's family is always rewarding and fulfilling. This is a lesson for all parents to give their children good education if they can, not minding your personal comfort at the time.
