Do you still pay a standing charge that helps maintain the power grid? We pay about 40 odd pence a day in the UK. One for gas and one for electricity. So that's £30 a month even if you're 100% self sufficient

I've never seen a tidy solar and battery setup. Solar panels on the roof spoil the aesthetics of the house. I'll happily continue to keep my house built in the early 1700s without the eyesore. I'm nice and warm with the open fires. My electric bill for the quarter is equivalent to 2 days at work. If the power does go out. I have kerosene lamps and camping stoves.

Do you not still pay the utility "standing charges" that covers the utility maintenance side of the system? Solar in general is coming down in price as more people are having solar installed, so more people can afford it each year. A 450kw panel is less than 100 euros, approx 165 Aus dollars I see 10kw batteries now for around 2k euros or around 3.3k Aus dollars. Prices are coming down. We couldn't afford an EV but we bought a car that ran on petrol and propane gas, which is half the price of petrol. (Dacia) It also gets around the emissions issues in the cities at the price of a normal car 17k euros. 27k Aus dollar. We know that most governments are not there for the people anymore but to line their own pockets, a bit like archery federations..

UK here. We have ECO4 grants - Energy Companies Obligation phase 4. Major energy companies provide funding and government set the qualifying criteria Aim is to lift the poorest in society out of fuel poverty. I qualified for a £45k grant for energy improvements- 8 x 600 solar, insulation and ashp Absolute debacle Panels fitted with fittings for a tiled roof, mines slate. Electrician wired them up so that everything I generated went straight off the grid. It was all subsequently condemned as unsafe None of it was earthed Insulation left live sockets and switches dangling and ashp has increased my electric bills by 400%. Loads of money sloshing about and loads of cowboys and there's no come back. When I complained I was told that all work met current standards and was certified. Fucking joke Cost me £3k to fix the roof!!!!
