To my logic and calculations, it is best to have a few panels let`s say up to 2kwp and a 10kw battery (usable capacity around 70%) so the panels are working hard and the battery covers a usage of most of appliances when sun goes down. It is pointless to build the system for winter (in my region). The point is to help yourself for 9-10 months a year.

In US Texas they charge 50,000 usd for the solar and claim it will produce enough so no electric bill. You become part of the grid and are stuck with 1 electric company. Often your system won’t produce enough to be totally free. I’d have to ask my neighbors to cut down a tree. But they STILL would have sold it to me even though it wasn’t’ a good fit. They encourage you to get a loan. The only solar I’ll do is a battery system where I sell extra to an electric company.

I live in Italy, here storage systems are not convenient, they are not repaid in a useful time, one goes to dismantle them and throw them away without having finished paying for them after 20 years, someone who lives in North Texas told me that the cost of energy it is so low that it is not worthwhile, they do not pay for themselves and are often damaged by bad weather or become dangerous because they come loose during gusts of strong winds etc. They are rarely seen on the roofs, some put them with storage to make up for the frequent blackouts but prefer automatic external generators, which give more power and autonomy to your houses which are enormous with high electricity consumption, all of which costs less and gives less uncertainty, perhaps a small DIY system is the solution to reduce costs and ensure that it is amortized in good time.Ciao

I designed and installed my own. It was a PITA and permitting has been a royal pain, but I saved a ton and have the system I wanted. I am not using a smart meter. I intend to get completely off grid eventually and I didn't want to be tied to the grid if the power goes out. That's a caveat they don't tell you - if you sell power back you are gird tied and if power goes out so does yours, even if you have solar, because of safety issues - they cannot have the lines energized if they are working on them.

I have 2 portable Jackery solar panels (200 watts total) and a small 1000 (or maybe it is 2000) generator/battery storage that goes with them just to have a back up for my small freezer. There is so much hail in this part of Texas that I would not want permanent ones on my roof. Also, many insurance companies are dropping people who have them because of the hail costs. Several solar farms in my area have been hit this year with massive hail damage causing harm to the environment with toxins leeching out of the broken panels. I pull my set up out every 3 months, discharge the battery/generator by running a window fan for several days, then recharge the system and store until needed. If I was to buy again, I would go the same way but use this other set up by another company that has a different battery which lasts longer than Jackery. I got this one during a black Friday sale.

@@rtsrts2317 I went with what I could afford at the time with the knowledge that I would only get a few years of use out of it. My daughter was very happy to have it last night as Houston has been hit with a major storm on the level of a cat 1 in terms of winds. She was able to plug in her refrigerator last night at 9 pm and by 6 this morning, she still had 44 percent remaining on the 1000 W battery. She has a on demand hot water heater that runs on gas, but they all have electric switches. She can get hot water by using this back up battery. Hotels are at a premium, and by staying home and using this one product judicially, selectively we will make our money back in cost savings. I would not have purchased except for the black Friday deal, included 2 solar panels that also have USB ports for charging other stuff at the same time as the generator, it being able to take a surge of 1200watts, and being lightweight enough that I could maneuver it where needed. In addition to the black Friday deal, I got either 100 or 200 off for taking out an Amazon credit card which I immediately paid off the next day. The cost matched my bank account and gave me peace of mind for being able to deal with another winter freeze like I had in Feb 2021 with no power for a week. Should the grid go down, I can wash clothes, I have a gas dryer but I need this for the electric portion, run my freezer and still keep up with the news and have internet. I will have to alternate between devices, but I will not be thrown totally back to the dark ages again. IF I had the money, I would've bought something else for sure.

Yeah, I've got twenty two batteries on my solar and wind system 😎, one side can charge the other, it's pretty good. I made a twelve volt battery charger out of an amplifier transformer and some diodes I had. I have 14,400 watt hours on my solar batteries and 14,000 on the wind generator batteries. You're exactly right about having enough batteries. It makes them last twice as long if there's enough of them. Nobody tells you that. But you notice, the picture always has eight batteries? They were thinking 🤔 those big 48 volts batteries like 100 amps apiece. They show those running a house 🏠. I've got enough batteries finally. I got the fourth lithium iron phosphate battery 🔋 about three weeks ago. They're in parallel with four 31 series deep cycle batteries for 600 amp hours @ 24 volts. My inverter is only 2000 watts, so the amp pull on each battery is nothing...it can only go to like twenty amps draw. But I never use my inverter that hard. Maybe eight total. So one amp per battery. I can go a week really easily. I can charge off the wind batteries too through the 12 volts inverter feeding the Aims Power inverter charger, it'll use the dirty power from the modified sine wave inverter to charge them. In case there's too much wind, not enough Sun 🌞, like in the winter time. My system can go a long time, maybe two weeks on the batteries. It's always enough for me. I don't have to run ⛽ generator here unless I am welding something. I use my WinCo Lil dog, it and the welder are both 2400 watts running. They work great together. I've had enough power for everything I wanted to do. People don't want to think about spending a big chunk of money on batteries. But you're right about that one. That's what it takes. The four lithium batteries cost me $2116. But they're really nice 👍😎. The 24 volts ones are getting scarce. I was lucky to get four, I guess. Well, good luck 🤞 with your plans. You have the brightest idea 💡⚡🔋🔋 about off grid power 😁👍😎⚡💡🔋💡⚡. But you're absolutely right on point. I asked an old man once how his thing worked, he had a long cart with sixteen batteries and inverter that ran his stuff. He told me, " It's all in how many good batteries you can get together, the more, the better." So, I guess I have to say, he was right. They last twenty times longer when there's a whole bunch of them. And they don't ever run down really. Life is just better when you have enough batteries. It is expensive but what isn't these days? Congrats on the most truest thing I have ever seen on the internet on a comment.

Solar Power from the USA. EG4 provides two types of allinones. grid and off grid: Grid the EG4 18k can send power back to the grid and you can you grid power when you need it. Off Grid does not send power back to the grid but it can use the grid when you need it. EG4 6000xp. Your grid for a 200a panel provides 48000W. To send power back to the grid: First the power company has to allow you (some do not) (It must be installed by a certified electrician using certified equipment). The off grid EG4 6000xp provides 6000w of power in the form of 2 120v 3000w sides. The sides do not share watts. This unit does not need batteries but works great with 48v batteries. This unit also includes 8000w PV input. We don't have the same electricity you do. Your terminality may be different ours. Good luck on your off grid build.

Fortunately here in the UK the Government provided a tariff for solar generation that was 3-4 x the unit cost price for consumption. This has worked well for me as the returns from the solar energy pays for my annual gas and electricity consumption.

I'm glad you learned and saw the truth about solar. If you have a system installed professionally, 60% or more of the cost is the installation. Then the company will "pad" the price of all the equipment to cover their responsibility to "warranty" the items and provide you replacements or compensation in the future if something fails. Solar panels are cheap now, and good quality inverters and other components are also quite cheap compared to years ago. I worked a short time for a solar installation company but left them because I couldn't stand all the scamming going on. They were selling systems which had no capacity to perform as they stated, nor be modified or updated to perform as they stated. I self-installed a 4000 watt grid tie-with battery backup system at my home for about $8,000 in equipment cost about 8 years ago. It's been erasing about $75 to $125 of my electric bill (depending on season) for the past 8 years with no equipment replacement cost or manitainance cost. It's already paid for itself, and now for the next 30+ years I'll get free power from it. By the way, don' worry about solar panels "getting old". Any reputable brand is guaranteed to have at least 80% of their original output after 25 years. They degrade less than 1% per year. If they don't get damaged by lightning or hail, just leave them up and let them generate free electricity for you. Here in the states it is a bit easier for a "do-it-yourselfer" to self install a system, depending on if you live in one of our communist states (Democratic run) or not. My advice, don't get too deep into the "expensive new tech" of solar, with all the lithium batteries and bells-and-whistles components with data logging and stuff. A great little system can be put together cheap with cheaper, old-model solar panels, a rugged transformer type inverter, PWM charge controllers and some golf cart batteries or marine batteries from Walmart. If you've got money to play with then you can add some higher end components. Always buy inverters/charge controllers "upsized" so you can add more panels later. You can also always "add more batteries" to a system to make your off grid backup capabilities better. Anyone not afraid to try to install a "car battery" could learn to put in a solar power system by just watching a few KZfaq videos (like Lilly's). By they way, that government program you have there where you can just "plug in" 600-800 watts of grid tie solar into your house wiring without a lot of hassle is really smart, a very good move by your government. We have no such law here. Essentially someone told your government people that the average household circuit easily handles 3000 watts (I presume your individual room circuits are 220 volt there), so back feeding 600-800 watts is pretty safe and chance of an overload fire is very low. (if you were running 3800 watts of load on a circuit by your solar panels were making 800 watts of it "after the circuit breaker" you wires could be overloaded and could heat up, that's they only way things could get crazy. There are lots of people putting up small systems in the US "under the radar", but to stop worrying about "getting nabbed" and getting a fine or an order to remove the system, you have to register with the power company and in most places have an inspection of your equipment. I got mine registered and it's all legal, and I live in a very cooperated state.

We have commercially installed roof solar. It cost $33K, minus $11K federal incentives, grand total $22K. It was my wife's idea; she wanted it. I wanted a small DIY solar panel or two, to power my home office which would have been vastly cheaper. So she had to take out a loan and pay for it herself. In two years we have paid $16 total electric bills. It has the cut-off as Lilly describes, so when the grid goes down, we have no power, just like everyone else. The only workaround is to get a battery such as a Tesla Powerwall and then we can finally be off-grid, at least for 2-3 days. This is my next goal, because in my town we have power outages about every 60 days, very annoying.

You have that frequency of power outages and don't own a generator? 🤦‍♀️ We live in Nova Scotia, and even before we went off-grid power outages were so frequent and so prolonged (a week or more in rural areas is not unheard of) that we bought a big one, and everyone in our province NOT living in an apartment or condo owns one! Lilly thanks for having a calm sensable discussion like this. I think the problem is not with the technology but a problem with fitting it into a for profit capitalist economic system. As you point out a problem is matching peak production peiods with peak usage periods. This was addressed by other commenters in pointing out the use of the battery storage system. The problem with this for the capitalist profiteer is that the solar system would be in the hands of the consumer with no opertunity for profit for power companies. This is an example of localization over centralisation. We need to understand though that with localisation we need to take more personal responcibility for the resourses that are available. Great job keep up the good work.

If it were me, considering the worries of things catching fire and burning my house down, I would build an independent system (an island system I think is what you called it) of whatever size I needed in panel watt real estate, and wire it to my own battery storage system. If you have the room, just put up a nice BBQ entertainment patio in the back yard and use solar panels to roof it. The battery storage could be a separate small shed like you are presently using, but not wired into the grid. Use dedicated plugs in your house wired directly to the battery system, or have an electrician add a panel that can be switched from grid power to your battery power but not both at the same time. The reason for disconnecting the grid is because nobody wants to work on downed power lines during a blackout while solar panel juice is still keeping the system live from your system! Whatever you do yourself, or by hiring an electrician, do not use aluminum wiring anywhere in the system; stick to copper! Also, this battery system can be dual purpose! EV's these days have large battery systems built in, and some can even supply juice for external use. I think Ford pickups now offer this, and my Jeep Hybrid will let me use the 17kw battery to power my house or whatever up to a 30amp draw. Solar panels can be used to charge the EV batteries alone. You've probably heard of the Will Prowse KZfaq channel by now. He has several years of videos covering solar panel use and lithium battery system reviews!

Every thing you said is true. However, there are options if you find a contractor to install your system or DIY. Local contractors can be way cheaper than the solar companies and DIY is the cheapest option. You did the right thing by starting small. It’s important to allow room for upgrades in the future. I recommend starting with systems that allow future growth without having to rebuy everything.

Suggestion: Place an Automatic Transfer/Isolation Switch between the Public Service Mains of your power supplier and your Domestic power systems. Then structure your primary Solar System to supply your home with power, add a generator to assist your solar power systems with recharging the household battery bank and supplying the household in power outages. Then during normal daily activities you can send power to the Mains, but in an emergency all of your power will be isolated from the system, thereby not wasting any, and maintaining safety for any power-line workers.

I have solar at my off grid cabin, and at our grid tied home. I strongly advise against backfeeding your power to the power company/utility. The cost for inverters, safety equipment and permits would be better spent if you invested in some batteries (even lead acid ones). The utility compnay can change the rules on what your power is worth at a moments notice, extending the return rate on your investment (if you see it as one); whereas, if you have a fully powered battery bank, you can go days (or weeks) before the power is restored. I look at solar as a way to not buy gasoline for a generator (both of which you should have). 400W is a bit on the small side for where I live, but it all depends on your requirements. Good content overall.

I've been off grid for around 6 years, don't ever want to be on grid again. I have far fewer power outages and it only takes about 30 minutes to replace the inverter or charge controller to get the system going again. After 5 years my flooded lead acid batteries gave out and I rebuilt the system and upgraded. Actually I've been upgrading things. I still use cheap stuff but I'm getting much better performance and so far no problems, other than replacing the cooling fans in the power inverter. I was surprised at how well my first system did even though it was so cheap. My two current systems are a collection of everything I've learned to build a cheap but reliable higher performance system. My small system uses three 250 watt used solar panels($150), a cheap pure sine wave 2000 Watt continuous power inverter, a Make Sky Blue MPPT charge controller($100), and two 6 volt 200 amp hour Mighty Max sealed lead acid batteries($439). If you don't run these batteries down too far they're supposed to last 10 years. I put two posts in the ground and built a wood frame to hold the panels on a tiltable frame that I can lock pointing East West or straight up and even all in between. I built a box for everything else and put it under the solar panels. I even added cooling fans and a thermostat control. Keeping the power inverter and charge controller cool is a very good thing. The system will run my 6000 BTU air conditioner non-stop all day and if I cut it off before the batteries start getting run down when the Sun goes down I can use the batteries to run the ac an hour or two at night. My large system has all the same stuff just more of it. One system is about 2 years old and the other around a year old. Only problem I've had is having to replace the cooling fans in the power inverters. So far I've never had to replace fans that I've already replaced. Always get higher quality ball bearing fans off eBay for around $20

We have 8 inverters. One 3k, three 2k and four 400 watt inverters. All pure sine wave inverters. We also purchased a 10,000 watt inverter dual fuel generator, a 3,500 watt dual fuel generator, a 2,000 watt inverter gasoline generator. We spent about $9,000 so far and are fixing to order two new 60 amp mppt charge controllers. We started with cheap pwm charge controllers. DIY Solar System with multiple battery banks and multiple generators was a good way to go for us. Two of our generator run on either gasoline or propane gas. Great Video👍

This brings a smile to my face. Thank god for smart ladies like yourself.. You are on the right track. You will eventually install a battery bank and a grid tied inverter thst can automatically cut supply to the grid during outage.. What you have is fine but you will follow your present success with more successful projects. Our house is off grid for 22 years but we installed a new ( s/h) battery bank of 60 forklift cells@ 120vdc in 2008. We installed a Chinese WT and later 3.8kw + 1500kw of solar pv. Its good. Its not perfect but we are never stuck.. Our inverter is 2kw but we use 3 x 2kw controllers . We heat over 500ltrs of water in 2 separate tanks. Each with a 2kw immersion heater to control our 2kw x 120vdc wind turbine. The whole system is completely automatic.... I wish you luck. I have no doubt that you will succeed.. G

Hello Lilly! I am from Argentina, South America. If i have to recommend solar PV systems for homes, y would reccomend just to keep off grid the refrigerator and a freezer. Those are working the 365 days, the 24hs (and some extra power to recharge a power station). The other electric devices can be administrated by the home owner, in order to save energy and money. Buy very efficient refrigerators and freezers and then invest in solar panels and batteries for this devices. Keep on grid for the others. In case of blackout, the food in the refrigerator and the freezer is safe. Meanwhile, if you have some extra power enough to charge a power station, cell phones and rechargeable batteries for lanterns, you will have all the energy you need to overcome an emergency. I Stay tuned!

G'day Lilly, We set up an off grid system for our cottage on the farm, 1KW of solar collection 400 watt wind turbine 4 x 120 AH quality LiPo batteries we chose 24 volts because the step up is less from that to 240 AC than from 12Volts.A 2KW Inverter through an ATS to a 6KVA Diesel generator the ATS thinks the inverter is the grid and the generator is whatever, there's a 35amp battery charger connected to the batteries so they're being charged whilst the generator is running in the case of a lack of sun and wind, all in a separate shed to the dwelling 👍.

For people not offgrid, “solar shed”/workshop probably makes more sense and can be used as the backup generator for the house if you set things up correctly. Depending on you local regulations, islanding might make more sense than directly linking to house grid. Additionally, in some areas using a battery/inverter system to do “peak shaving” of house power might work out without having to hook up to panels or turbines and also covers short outages as well.

Where I live we are too far north for solar systems to work well but people do buy them anyway. A large factory just put in a field of solar panels right next to the freeway. Besides not getting enough light most of the year they're going to be covered in freeway dust, dust from their giant factory, and dust from the farm fields they are next to. What really makes me angry is we have to pay extra for electricity so the electric company could build solar plants and windmills and then we have to pay extra to keep those running.
