To understand the combination of Voltage and Amperage , it helped me 1. to imagine a Cliff on a Mountain , the higer the Mountain , the higer the voltage 2. imagine a rock to be pushed of that cliff ..., the bigger the rock the higher the amperage ... 3. the air resistance would be the Ohms electrical resistance ..., while it would be difficult to imagine air heating up ... 😀

Wonderful. Finally , I have a practical explanation of the difference between voltage and amperage. Thanks to your Dad and you. I have AGM batteries (1500AH Hoppecke batteries) the data sheet specifies that equalization be done every 40days. Your comment on equalization on AGM batteries have me a little confused, would not want my batteries damaged.

Thank you for your message Adeniji, it is nice to hear you enjoyed the video! I am glad to hear you are using the Hoppecke AGM's, in my experience they are top of the line! Not that many people use them due to availability / price. Sorry to have confused you regarding the equalization: The need for equalization of AGM's ultimately depends on the design of each specific battery, since AGM's can differ quite substantially. In my experience with Hoppecke batteries, following the recommended manufacturing settings yields the best possible end results. I hope this helps, enjoy your excellent batteries! PS I love your name, my guess is it is a Nigerian name? All the best, Jesse.

Excellent, concise video, exactly the kind of explanation I was looking for. Suggest to produce a video that explains the difference between Lithium ION and LiFePo4 batteries. In fact people seem to accidentally misnomer Lithium Iron and pronounce it as Lithium Ion (omitting the "R" in Iron) probably because they don't know the significant difference between the two. I have not been able to find someone who will explain the dangers of Li Ion and the advantages of LiFePo4 in a well-produced video. Then again, it seems people could care less, in which case the video wouldn't get any views, possibly a waste of time. Thanks

@Arminius thanks for your feedback. I find what you are pointing out very interesting, and you are definitely right that there seems to be a lot of confusion between the terminologies used and the characteristics of the the different types of Lithium-based batteries. Please go into detail about charging LAB (flooded, AGM, Gel) arranged in strings of series-parallel. I have large AGM batteries repurposed from a data center that were never cycled I am using them for my off-grid solar at night. My inverter would prefer 36+VDC but will operate on 24+VDC. My batteries are 12V. I want to arrange them 3 in series and then two banks of three in parallel. I get VERY mixed information about how to use my charge controller to charge them during the day. Lots of information saying my middle battery in series will be damaged during load and unequal charging will happen. What is this all about? How do I (schematic??) arrange my batteries so they charge correctly each day. I live in Southern CA and have excellent true south exposure from sunrise to sunset for my panels.

It would be interesting to understand what happens with a dead car battery, in my case a lead/acid one. My CTEK charger charged it from "dead" (2 leds out of 8) to full in a few hours, but it lost its charge until morning, and now it's staying at 2 leds for hours, and both the charger and the battery get hot. I can hear bubbling inside the battery. When is it a lost cause, and why ? This was bought new a couple of years ago then kept in storage where it deep discharged

Hi, I have had all my AGM batteries gassing away during absorption and wondering how I can reduce the gassing, the problem is that even though they are fitted with catalyst caps, the recombination is far to be fully effective, its seems that this catalyst is a bit of a gimmick. What to you would be the lowest voltage that is acceptable for absorption and how much can we compress the absorption time down to? It is really hard to find this information online.

Thanks so much for the video. Very informative. I have a Mastervolt 50A/3-channel charger, connected to 4x 6v lead acid batteries by Interstate, (2 other channels of the charger are for start batteries). Batteries about 3 yrs old, and never been equalized. My bad. The charger appears to be able to do only a poor job of equalization since it only approaches the equalization voltage and stays there for a short time. And Interstate indicates that equalization should be done for 2 hrs at the equalization voltage. Can you advise any special equipment or setup that would allow for proper equalization to be performed on the batteries?

@user-rz3ro9lu6o

@@SolarSolution You can only adjust the equalization voltage. You cannot adjust the duration of how long the charger stays at the equalization voltage. I am actually considering the purchase of a DC power supply that has voltage and current settings so that I can adjust what is applied to the batteries during equalization. I realize that I will need to ensure that the batteries are isolated from all loads and chargers when I apply the DC power supply output.

Wow, great explanation! Finally I understand the differences! :) I do have one small question though, if you have time...my solar charge controller is pre-set to go to floating charge at 13.8V and to equalizing charge at 14.6V, however the label on my battery says floating charge should be activated at 13.5V and equalizing at 14.1. Do I have to be concerned about these differences? Unfortunately I can only change the preset by adding a bluetooth controller, which is very difficult to get here in Peru. Please let me know if you think that's really necessary or if I'll be just fine with the preset settings! Thank you! (btw: I'm not sure if it matters but I actually run two of these batteries in series because my system runs at 24V).

Thank you for your message Gerald, I am glad to hear you enjoyed the video. And nice to hear from somebody in Peru!. Unfortunately I cannot provide you with technical advice through the KZfaq comment section. Sticking with the manufacturers recommended voltage settings is often wise. Overcharging a battery can [among other things] lead to accelerated aging, case bulging, and excess loss of electrolyte. This being said, the flooded lead acid battery are less sensitive to overcharging [and other forms of abuse], compared to the AGM and GEL types. I hope this helps, if not you can contact me directly through the main website. Good luck! Jesse

It is mentioned the charge current is a function of the Ah rating of the battery, but how does the charger know the Ah rating of the battery? How does a battery charger differentiate between 100 Ah battery and a 200 Ah battery?
@biggybiggy84
@biggybiggy84 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't. He said that when it reaches a certain resistance that it triggers something in the circuitry of the charger to start the absorption process. The absorption charge rate could be a preset amperage value in your charger common for your type of battery (doesn't matter the ah). Only after it reaches a certain time or the amperage reaches an almost equilibrium state that threshold is met and you have reached float value. The charger should stop charging after this? But we know my cheap lead acid charger will keep charging at the 2a setting i selected and bubble up excess energy from the battery until you unplug it. Now ah rating is important because you dont want to charge it faster than the 20% ah rating for your battery. If you pick up a 5a output charger and charge a 25ah battery that would be 20% the max charge rate you can safely use. You need to check the absorption rate of the charger for compatibility with your battery. I got a battery cooking now I need to check on. Nothing smart about this one. I was going to add that is why I start my charger on a high setting for a low battery and after it reaches a certain voltage around 80% of float value I turn it down to the lowest setting and this has always gave me a strong car battery. It does give me a green light so maybe it does shut off I dont know. I've had some bad batteries come back to life after a really slow charge for extended periods kinda resets them or something. I think they call it battery conditioning.

Hello friend, I'm writing from Portugal, I really liked your video, I wanted to ask a question about what is happening to me in my off grid system, 2 or 3 days ago I put my inverter to equalize to 31.4v, but it just arrives at 30.6v, and it doesn’t go up, which may happen, today I did the same thing and the same thing happens, the voltage doesn’t go up, I have 12 batteries (2v cpzs 930AH) only have 9 months of use ... hope you can help.

Hi I’m not very smart I just purchased a electric motorbike lithium ion battery it says something like “once light turns green and fully charged allow float charging for 1-2 hours does this mean leave it plugged in when it’s full charged for 1-2 hours 😅

Yes, First stage bulk max rated charging up to 20%ah rating. They probably advertise how fast the green light comes on. They say float but I bet you its the absorption stage where the charge controller lowers the current due to the first stage completion re battery voltage and slowly finishes the charge till float (100%) as the video explains. You could test using a dc amp clamp. Or possibly using a regular volt meter set to dc, unplug the charger after the green light comes on and check the bikes battery voltage by touching your leads to the harness connections for your bike. Plug it back in for 2 hours and then check the voltage again. That reading should be close to your float voltage. Find the nominal voltage (lower than the green light value) the factory says the battery is and subtract from your float voltage (highest value). Example: Lets say you get get .5v difference (that's usually what i get from a single cell 18650) from nominal (shipping factory voltage) to float. Divide by 10 would be .05 so if i'm right your green light came on after 80% charge meaning .05 x 8 = .4 volt increase, in this example, from nominal voltage would be 80% and another .1 volt (20%) increase would be the float charge. Also if you know the battery cell make up you can find the battery factory voltage and see how many times they ran it in series to come up with the voltage rating they provide. So if its 18650 cells the voltage is I think 3.7v lets say if your bike says 48v then the batteries ran in series 13 times and the voltage more accurately would be 48.1v. So knowing the cells really helps make this test for more accurate. That .1v could mean 20%. Sounds crazy but if you run it in series 13x's that .5 x 13 = 6.5v divide by 100 = .065 that means .1v may only be about 2% of a higher voltage system. That sounds more like it. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

Hi Ashley, thanks for your message. Imagine that you are inflating the tire of your bicycle: While you are pumping, the pressure in the pump itself is quite high, and forces air into the tire. The pressure of the tire will increase, although the pressure in the pump will still be higher than that of the tire. Similar to inflating your tire, you will need a higher voltage from your charging device, in order to "inflate" your battery. When you will stop charging, you will now see what the actual "pressure" in the battery is. The voltage you are seeing during a charging cycle is the voltage produced by the charging device. I hope this helps! Jesse DISCLAIMER: Don't try to charge your battery with your bicycle pump :)

What would happen if you used a dc to dc converter instead of a normal controller for solar? They can accept variable input and the output can be set to a specific voltage. Why not set it at the float voltage and save the money for a controller?

I did find this: Recharging deep-cycle batteries with a charger using a constant voltage or a fixed charge algorithm can, over time, lead to a condition called stratification. Stratification occurs when the acid in the electrolyte separates from the water and settles to the bottom of the battery causing damage
